---------------------------
Phone Directory v2.0 is freeware.
Your praise, comments or suggestions
would be appreciated by the author

IF YOU READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT, YOU'LL LEARN A SPECIAL
HIDDEN FEATURE OF PHONE DIRECTORY!

WHAT IT DOES
---------------
Phone Directory is a small Windows program that searches
a text file named C:\PHONEDIR\PHONE.TXT for occurrences
of a user-specified text string. When it finds a match,
it returns the line of text in which the match was found.

It is useful for quickly referencing lists of names
and phone numbers. (See the included PHONE.TXT file
for an example.)

The PHONE.TXT file may be accessed directly from the
Phone Directory menu bar. Also, Phone Directory
supports CUT and PASTE.

The Phone Directory window may be set to any
desired width; however, the height is restricted
to one line of text.

SET UP
------
Before setting up Phone Directory, prepare as follows:

  * Unzip PHONEDIR.ZIP and make sure it
     includes the following files:

       PHONE.EXE 9757k
       PHONE.INI 16k
       PHONE.TXT 158k
       README.TXT 3512k

  * Make sure you are running Windows 3.x or Windows 95.

  * Make sure you have a copy of VBRUN300.DLL
in your Windows system folder. This file is
available on the internet and on the various
     online services.

Do the following to set up Phone Direcory:

  *  Create the directory C:\PHONEDIR.

  *  Copy PHONE.EXE, PHONE.INI, PHONE.TXT and
     README.TXT to C:\PHONEDIR.

Note: Phone Directory will only search the text file
named PHONE.TXT that resides in C:\PHONEDIR.
Also, Phone Directory expects to find PHONE.INI
                 in C:\PHONEDIR.

  * Create a program manager icon for PHONE.EXE.
If you're not sure how to do this, see your Windows manual.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
--------------
I needed a quick and easy way to search a list of about 600 names and numbers. I also wanted a program that I could leave running on my desktop without using up a lot of resources. Phone Directory was my solution. In over a year of daily use, I've never seen it take more than 1% of my system resources. For my purposes, using Phone Directory has a speed advantage over using SEARCH/FIND in a text editor. In Phone Directory, by simply typing the search phrase and pressing [enter] I can retrieve a desired name or number. In a text editor, such a search would require making sure that the cursor was at the top of the document, then making two mouse clicks on the menu, then typing the search phrase and then making one more mouse click.

I hope you find Phone Directory useful as I have. Write to me at jtshea@tiac.net and let me know what you think.
