----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. WHAT IS Camtasia?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

TechSmith's Camtasia is a screen camcorder and video production tool.
Use Camtasia to record screen activity as videos, edit and narrate the
clips, and publish the finished presentation in standard formats.
Develop videos that introduce new software, train new users of existing
software, or create any kind of active documentation. Distribute the
videos as standard AVI files or as streaming presentations from a
website. Use standard players to view presentations, including the
Windows Media Player or the RealNetworks RealPlayer G2. With Camtasia's
Live Output option, you can even use Camtasia as a live source with
streaming media encoders, video conferencing, and web cam applications.

Camtasia includes all the tools you need to record and produce your
videos. Camtasia Recorder is a desktop camcorder that captures screen
activity and applies real-time effects. Camtasia Producer is a non-linear
editor producing standard AVI files or streaming formats. Capture all of
the screen or zoom in to focus attention, add special effects for mouse
clicks or cursor movement, add annotations and watermarks, trim, split,
or attach AVI video clips, add transition effects between clips, and
record narratives while capturing the screen or later.

Camtasia Recorder and Producer both use the TechSmith Screen
Capture Codec, a unique video codec optimized for recording screen
activity. The TechSmith video codec offers perfect "lossless" quality,
fast compression speeds, and exceptional compression of typical
desktop application activity. Of course, you can also produce videos
using any of the standard Windows codecs, or streaming media codecs.
Camtasia also includes DubIt, TechSmith's easy to use audio editor.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to run Camtasia, your system must meet these specifications:

  o Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98 (or later).

o A mouse or other pointing device

o A Windows supported sound card for audio playback and recording
     from a microphone.

o The standard Windows multimedia system software is required to
produce AVI files. If you can play AVI movies and WAV audio files,
you should be able to use Camtasia to produce AVI files.

o Microsoft's "Windows Media Tools" must be installed to produce
Windows Media files. "Windows Media Tools" is available from
     Microsoft at www.microsoft.com.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Camtasia QUICK START
----------------------------------------------------------------------

4.1 Start Camtasia Recorder by double-clicking on the Camtasia
    Recorder icon.

4.2 Select the video capture area. Click on the Capture --> Input menu
item, and select screen, window, region, or fixed region. The
fixed region option will bring up a dialog box to specify the
    capture area.

4.3 Press the capture hotkey (default F9), or click on the Record
button on the toolbar. By default, Camtasia Recorder automatically
pauses at the start of a capture session to allow the user to configure
options such as selecting a specific Window or Region to capture.
The statistics screen will appear in the Camtasia Recorder window
at this time. Press the hotkey again to end the pause and begin
the capture. During recording, Camtasia Recorder's tray icon will turn
bright red. To pause the capture, press the hotkey again, or click on
the Pause button on the toolbar. To end the capture, click on the
Stop button on the toolbar. A dialog box will open to save the
    capture to file.

4.4 Camtasia Recorder Capture Options:
o Audio input from the microphone can be recorded during video
capture. Select Record Audio from the Effects menu or the
         audio toolbar.
o The capture area can be panned manually by grabbing the edge
of the capture focus rectangle. AutoPan automatically moves
the capture rectangle about the screen to keep focus on the
         cursor.
o Zoom effects allow the user to zoom in and out during capture.
These effects can be applied using options on the Effects
menu or the zoom toolbar. AutoZoom applies an automatic pan
and zoom effect when the zoom level is changed. ZoomTo
allows the user to quickly zoom to a preset level or zoom to
fit a specific object or region on the desktop. ZoomUndo
allows the user to easily switch between the current and last
panning location and zoom level. Advanced zoom options are
available in the Options --> Effects dialog.
o Cursor effects allow the user to modify how the cursor is
displayed in the video capture. The cursor effects can be
applied using options on the Effects menu or the cursor
toolbar. The cursor location and mouse clicks can be
highlighted in the video capture. Advanced cursor options are
available in the Options --> Effects dialog.
o The video capture may be annotated with a time/date stamp or a
caption. Desktop objects can be highlighted with highlight options.
These options can be selected from the Effects menu or the
annotation toolbar. Advanced annotation options are available
in the Options --> Effects dialog.
o The ScreenPad feature allows allows the user to include annotations
(captions, callouts, logos, stamps, sticky notes, etc) in their
screen recording at capture time. These annotations "float" on the
desktop above normal application windows. The annotation objects
are managed in a user extendable "libraries" of annotation shapes.

4.5 Camtasia Producer
Camtasia Producer allows you to edit your AVI video clips to produce
a longer, professional presentation. Camtasia Producer uses a
simple storyboard metaphor to help you easily produce a movie from
many clips. Browse and preview your clips with the Producer's File
Explorer. Trim your clips in the Producer's Editor. Place your clips
on the Producer's Storyboard and create a standard AVI file or an ASF
or RealMedia streaming file. Over 70 transition effects are available
to give your movie a professional look. The Producer supports the
TechSmith Screen Capture Codec, so you can produce high quality
and highly compressed files from your screen capture content.

By default Camtasia Producer creates videos using the TSCC video codec.
The "File->Pack and Show" option in Producer helps you create videos
that automatically install the TSCC video codec and play the video clip.
Of course, you can also produce videos with any of the standard Windows
video codecs or streaming media codecs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. WHAT'S NEW
----------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 Version history

  v1.0.0 Initial release.

v1.0.1 Fixed a problem with producing RealMedia files where the
audio stream is truncated in the produced RealMedia file when
the movie is longer than about 5 minutes.

Fixed a problem where the first video capture after installing
Camtasia on Windows NT can hang the system.

Improved how Camtasia works when Windows is in "high contrast"
mode, and with various system color schemes and font sizes.

v1.0.2 Camtasia passes the "Designed for Microsoft Windows NT and
          Windows 98 logo test".

The TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) now allows any
application to use it to compress files as long as a registered
version of Camtasia is installed, or if an unregistered version
of Camtasia is installed and within the 30-day eval period.

Fixed problems with the "ASF optimized for screen capture"
option in Camtasia Producer producing ASF files that do not
always stream from a Windows Media Server. A side effect
of the fix is a reduction in ASF file size and streaming bitrate.

Fixed Camtasia Producer's File Explorer pane so that "View->
File Explorer->Refresh" (F5) refreshes the folder tree view.

Fixed Camtasia Producer's File Explorer pane so that files in
the "Desktop" folder can be listed.

Fixed Camtasia Producer so that the editor control buttons are
not clipped when a system is using large fonts.

v1.0.3 Added options for audio/video interleaving in AVI files.

Camtasia Recorder is now a normal window, with standard minimize
and close buttons on the title bar.

Added ability to choose the audio recording device in Camtasia
          Recorder.

Added a "Capture->Stop" hotkey in Camtasia Recorder.

Added an "Always on top" option in Camtasia Recorder.

Added ability to apply transition effects to multiple selected
items
          on the Camtasia Producer storyboard.

Added an option to control rounding the captured frame size to a 4
          pixel boundary in Camtasia Recorder.

The "Auto Configure" AVI options in Camtasia Recorder now only
configures the video codec and frame rate. The audio format can
be changed when "Auto Configure" is enabled.

Fixed problems with the captured cursor position and color on
a 256 color desktop in Camtasia Recorder.

Fixed crash on exit from the Camtasia Recorder "minimal view".

v2.0.0 Added "ScreenPad" floating annotation feature in Camtasia Recorder.

Added "Live Output" Video Capture Driver option in Camtasia Recorder.

Added Watermark option in Camtasia Recorder and Producer.

Added desktop object "Highlight" options in Camtasia Recorder.

Added "Quick Capture" mode in Camtasia Recorder.

Added "Hide" hotkey and option to disable hotkeys in Camtasia
          Recorder.

Added "Pack and Show" distribution option in Camtasia Producer.

Added ActiveX control to auto install TSCC video codec from web
          pages.

Upgraded RealMedia support to version 7.

Fixed problems with audio compression where the compressed
audio stream was too short on long movies with some audio codecs.

Fixed problems capturing the cursor on a 256 color desktop when
the screen under the cursor changes quickly (e.g. moving the cursor
over the Windows Start menu on Windows 2000).

Fixed problems with capture statistics and dropped frame padding
when "Single Frame" capture mode is enabled in Camtasia Recorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. KNOWN LIMITATIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
o Camtasia generally cannot capture DVD video displays.
o Camtasia cannot directly capture audio from other applications
(e.g. Windows Media Player). However, it is sometimes possible to
record this audio by placing the microphone near your computer's
speakers, or by connecting "line out" to "microphone in" on your
      sound card.
o Camtasia cannot capture video from applications on some systems
that use graphics hardware acceleration for video playback
(e.g. newer versions of Media Player and RealNetwork's RealPlayer).
It is often possible to disable the graphics hardware acceleration.

There are two ways to disable graphics hardware acceleration:
      1. Disable graphics hardware acceleration globally for all applications
using the Control Panel "System" applet. Go to the "Performance"
tab and click the "Graphics" button under "Advanced settings...".
Set the "Hardware acceleration" slider to None and hit OK. You may
need to restart Windows to have this change apply.
      2. Disable graphics hardware acceleration for a particular application.
For example, in RealPlayer G2 select Options/Preferences from the
RealPlayer menu. Go to the "Performance" tab and disable (uncheck)
the "Use optimized video display" setting. You may need to stop
and restart any movie being played to have the change take effect.

Disabling the graphics hardware acceleration globally for all applications
is probably the easiest way to "fix" the problem. Of course, with
hardware acceleration disabled, video playback may not be as
smooth as it could be with acceleration enabled.
