Larry wants his department to approve his request for a sabbatical with full pay, which he claims he should receive. He knows that he will have to be very persuasive since the department is short on funds and will have a hard time paying for his sabbatical and a replacement for him.

Larry: "Before I make my case I would like to congratulate the chair on his success at receiving a $150,000 grant for an avant-garde performance by his dance students. I understand that it was reviewed very favorably in the local paper."
Chair: "Why thank you."
Larry: "I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sue on her publication in the Art Review Magazine. It was a brilliant piece that I wish I had written."
Sue: "Thanks Larry."
Larry: "I'd also like to congratulate Bill and Sasha for winning teaching awards this year. I knew you were going to win since my students always say what great professors you are."
Bill and Sasha: "Thank you, Larry."
Joe: "Can we get on with the vote? I've got to get home. Margie has been stuck with the baby all day and she'll be really annoyed if I don't get back in time for her to get that book chapter done."
Larry: "Sorry Joe. By the way, your baby is the cutest one I've ever seen. You and Margie should be proud of her."
Joe: "We certainly are."
Larry: "Okay, is everyone ready to vote?"Appeal to EmotionAppeal to PityQuestionable CauseAppeal to FlatteryAppeal to Emotion: This is a wrong answer. Larry is trying to sway his audience but he is not trying to get them to accept his claim by making them feel good about the claim itself.Appeal to Pity: This is a wrong answer. Larry is making no attempt to invoke sympathy in his audience in hope that it will induce them to accept his claim.Questionable Cause: This is a wrong answer. Larry is not engaged in any kind of causal reasoning.Appeal to Flattery: This is the right answer. Larry is (rather blatantly) attempting to flatter his fellows in order to induce them into accepting his claim. Nothing he says is at all relevant to the truth or falsity of his claim that he should receive the sabbatical.Larry is trying to sway his audience, but what is he appealing to?4
