ReadMe file & Quick Start Guide for Brooklyn Free-form Address Book Plus
======= Installation

Use WinZip or similar utility to open the zip file and then simply choose Setup from within Winzip. Or you can extract the files to a temporary directory, and then from Window's Start Menu do Start|Run|Browse to that directory and click on Setup.exe.

Most folks don't like wading through bulky documentation or getting lost in complex help files. So we have instead tried to make Brooklyn intuitive as possible and have included a mercifully brief "Quick Start" guide below. There is also a Troubleshooting guide at the end of this file.

The Brooklyn distribution zip file is freely distributable provided it is not altered in any way, or any charge made for it (except for a resonable media charge for compilation CD-ROMs containing many freeware/shareware programs).
Contact e-mail addresses for installation problems, distribution queries, etc. are listed on our home page at:

======= Uninstall

If you should ever wish to completely remove Brooklyn from your computer, first Exit from Brooklyn if it is currently running. Then with the Windows Start Menu do: Start|Settings|Control Panel and double-click on "Add/Remove Programs". Click on Brooklyn, then click on the Remove button.

======= Requirements
Brooklyn should run fine on any Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME computer with 32MB or more.

======= Quick Start
Click on the "?" button on the top right of the opening program screen for current on-line help. Briefly, here is how you use the program after you have installed it (more complete info is in the on-line help file).

The "Name" for the entry appears in the grid containing several entries. The current entry is marked to the left, and a Memo field appears at the bottom for the currently selected entry.

You use the VCR-like navigation bar to move through the database, as well as: add a new entry (+), delete the current entry (-), modify the current entry, post changes, and cancel changes. If you forget what a button does, just position the mouse cursor over it for a second and "flyover" help will appear.

Similarly, the "Speed Buttons" in the top panel allow you to act on the current entry, such as dialing a phone number listed in the entry, address an e-mail message, visit its web page, search entries, copy text between the entry and the Windows Clipboard, reindex & backup the database, and get more info and statistics on an entry and the database. As with the Navigation Bar, placing the mouse cursor over a button for a second will bring up "flyover" description of the button's function.

You can exit Brooklyn by clicking the X in the extreme upper right hand corner of the program window, or by pressing the alt-F4 key combination.

======= Troubleshooting

If it seems Brooklyn will not run properly, please perform the following steps:

1. Close as many open applications as you can, especially if you have less that 64M RAM.

2. Click on the "toolbox" icon at the top to reindex the file.

3. If none of that works, then Restart your computer. It is possible another open program did not shut down properly and therefore not enough RAM memory is free.

If none of these steps solve the problem, send us an email. Check our home page for contact addresses: http://www.zipcon.com/~highroad/index.html
