Refs 7.3
========

24 January 1994

Introduction
------------

Refs is a program for creating browsing and maintaining academic
reference databases. The program uses the common ASCII Unix refer file
format and so is compatible with Unix refer, and also bibliography programs
such as WinRefer.

Refs can also import data files in other formats, in an easily expandable
way. Modules are supplied to read ISI and Medline files, and the help
file includes details for writing your own modules.

It is shareware, and the distribution should contain the following files:

        REFS.EXE The program itself
        REFS.HLP The help file
	REFS.INI	INI file
	REFEN.DLL	English language DLL
	REFDEU.DLL	German language DLL
	IMPBIDS.DLL	BIDS (ISI) Import DLL
	IMPMED.DLL	Medline Import DLL
	IMPCHEM.DLL	Chemical Abstracts Import DLL
        CTL3D.DLL Microsoft 3D library
	INSTALL.EXE	Installation program
	INSTALL.INI	Installation INI file.
TEST.REF	Example Unix refer data file
        README.TXT This file

The program will work with Windows 3.1 or higher.

Changes since Refs 7.2:
-----------------------

* You can now specify how Refs sorts its display.

* All resources removed and placed in a separate DLL, to allow for easy
creation of future versions in other languages. German and English are
supplied, translation into German by Gerald Pfeifer.

* Maximum length of bibliography format lines increased from 63 to 255
   characters.

* Status line responds to menu changes properly.

* File import dialog greys the Options... and OK buttons if a bad REFS.INI
   entry is selected.

* The main editing dialog has been made slightly smaller. It should now
   fit 640x480 screens better.

* Minor modifications to MedLine and ISI import filters, and also to the
   installation program.

Installation
------------

You will need PKUNZIP 2.04 or later to extract the ZIP file.

1. Extract this file into a spare directory.
2. Run INSTALL.EXE, which will install the program automatically.

NB. INSTALL will notice an existing REFS.INI file and will back it up
if required.
