What is H-R Calc for Windows?

Welcome to H-R Calc for Windows 1.00. H-R Calc for Windows
is a tool that allows the user to derive a stars theoretical
radius given its luminosity and spectral class (effective
surface temperature). This program is designed for educators,
students of astronomy, amateur astronomers, and anyone wishing
to expand their understanding of the H-R Diagram and the relationship
between stellar luminosity, effective temperatures and stellar radii.

After installation, H-R Calc is fairly easy to use. Double click the
H-R Calc icon to launch the application. A screen with sliders, textboxes
and buttons appears. The objective is to provide the application with
two variable parameters: stellar temperature and luminosity. To enter
a stellar temperature you can either:

		a. use the textbox and enter a numeric value for the effective
surface temperature of the star you wish to model

		b. use the slider to choose a temperature value

		c. click on the star's position on the H-R Diagram

To enter a luminosity you can either:

		a. use the slider to select a luminosity value

		b. enter a numeric value in the textbox provided

		c. enter the star's absolute bolometric magnitude in the
textbox under the heading "absolute bolometric magnitude"

		d. press the "B" button to derive an absolute bolometric
magnitude if you know the absolute visual magnitude of the
star and its spectral/luminosity class. To do this:

			1. press the button labeled "B"
			2. in the dialog box, select star's luminosity class
			3. select the star's spectral class from the listbox
			4. enter the star's absolute visual magnitude in the
			   textbox.
			5. Press the "Apply" key to apply the derived bolometric
			   magnitude to H-R Calc.

		e. click on the star's position on the H-R Diagram.

Each change made to either temperature or luminosity provides a new
scale model where the star's radius is compared to our sun's radius.
The "Scale Model" button is enabled for stars with radii greater than
7 solar radii. Pressing this button shows how large the star is in
	comparison to our solar system.

Another way of entering data is by using the Options menu.

		a. Select Options then "Choose Star"
		b. a listbox of actual stars is displayed
		c. click on a star name to see a model of it's size

That's a quick rundown on how to use H-R Calc for Windows. For
complete information on this applications features, please view
the help file "HRHELP.HLP" Note that the Unregistered Shareware
version of H-R Calc is fully functional; however, the program will
only run for a 7 minute demo period and then must be restarted.

Installation Instructions:

H-R Calc consists of many files compressed into one ZIP file.
     To install follow these steps:

	1. Copy the file HRCAL1.ZIP to a temporary directory
	    on your hard drive.

	2. Use an unzipping utility such as PKUNZIP to extract
	    all files from HRCAL1.ZIP

	3. Run the program SETUP.EXE

	4. Follow the instructions given by the setup routine

	5. Delete the temporary directory created in step 1.
	    It is no longer needed.

System requirements:

IBM Comaptible machine with 80286 processor or higher
A hard disk with at least 3.5 MB of free space
VGA or SVGA graphics display (SVGA Recommended)
4 MB of RAM memory recommended

MS Windows 3.0 or later versions
