RIP GRAPHICS & SPITFIRE
-----------------------

Well, the decision has been made. SPITFIRE v3.4 (to be released
soon, I hope) will support RIP graphics. Frankly, RIP graphics are
really very nice. They are smaller, faster, prettier and more practical
than ANSI files. That makes good sense to me.

My only concern is that SPITFIRE will be blamed for ill-created
RIP files. The good Lord knows that SPITFIRE already falsely gets
the blame for everything from bad modems to poorly written batch files.
One time a fellow had a flat tire on the way to work and it was all
SPITFIRE's fault (smiling).

LAKOTA v1.1f RELEASED!
----------------------

There are some little fixes going on within LAKOTA on a fairly
regular basis. For example, someone on Circuitnet (forget who) told
me that the 'no keystroke' timer in LAKOTA wasn't working. In my
normal fashion was quick to tell him that the feature worked just fine.
After telling him that it worked fine, I then tested it to be sure
(kinda a backwards order I think) it worked. It turns out that he was
absolutely correct. It is now corrected in LAKOTA v1.1f.

QWK NET-MAIL SYSTEM BEING CONSIDERED FOR SPITFIRE
-------------------------------------------------

I am currently considering writing a simple QWK net-mail system
for SPITFIRE. This would provide SPITFIRE Sysops with a means of
starting their own mail net-works. It would also provide a means of
exchanging mail with boards using other BBS software. A firm decision
regarding creating this QWK net-mail system has not been made so I will
appreciate any feedback you wish to provide regarding the matter. In
the event I decide to write the software (and I think that I will) it
will be written in the normal Buffalo Creek Software manner (small,
simple and fast). Additionally, if I decide to write the software,
I will be looking for test sites.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER!

I want to thank each of your for your continued support and
promotion of SPITFIRE ... it is very much appreciated.

WHATS NEW IN SPITFIRE V 3.4?
;

Support for RIP Graphics has been added to SPITFIRE. This is an
optional feature within SPITFIRE. Using the ALT+T Toggle SPITFIRE
Switches window, the Sysop can configure whether RIP Graphics will be
available on their BBS. If toggled to Yes, when a caller logs on the
BBS, SPITFIRE will perform a test which will determine if the caller
is using a RIP terminal program. If the caller is not using a RIP
terminal communications program the caller is prompted with: "Do You
Want ANSI Graphics? <y/N>". If the caller is using a RIP terminal
communications program, the caller is prompted to select one of the
following graphic formats: <A>nsi, <R>ip, or <N>one. If RIP Graphics
is selected, *.RIP display files will be displayed to the caller, if
found.

SPITFIRE now supports three new display files which are specific
to RIP Graphics. These include:

MAINCTRL.RIP Allows the Sysop to create a RIP graphic
display which can be used as a control
panel while in the Main section of the BBS.

FILECTRL.RIP Allows the Sysop to create a RIP graphic
display which can be used as a control
panel while in the File section of the BBS.

MSGCTRL.RIP Allows the Sysop to create a RIP graphic
display which can be used as a control
panel while in the Message section of the BBS.

The objective of the control panel display screens is to provide a
screen for callers that contains all the alpha, numeric and SPITFIRE
options that may be used to move around or accomplish a task on the
BBS. Each of these alpha, numeric or SPITFIRE option buttons are
mouseable. By using control panels, a caller can log on a SPITFIRE
BBS using a RIP terminal communication program and only have to touch
the keyboard one time when entering <R> to select RIP Graphics. From
that point on, by use of control panels, SPITFIRE can be completely
mouseable from log on to log off.

A modification, related to RIP graphics, was made to the <Y>our
Statistics feature available from the Main Menu. The command <A>
ANSI On/Off has been changed to <G> Graphics On/Off. Selecting G
will toggle the Graphics mode On or Off. When toggled Off, ANSI and
RIP graphic modes are turned off and ASCII is used. When turned On,
SPITFIRE loads the ANSI graphics mode and then performs the RIP
terminal test. If a RIP terminal is detected, the caller is then
prompted as to whether they would like to use RIP graphics.

Some explanation may be necessary to better understand the order
in which SPITFIRE determines what display files will be shown to
the caller. If a caller selects RIP graphics, SPITFIRE will first
display the .RIP extension display files, if found. If the .RIP
display file does not exist, SPITFIRE will display the .CLR extension
display files, if found. If neither the .RIP or .CLR display file
exists, then SPITFIRE will display the .BBS display file. If none of
these are found, SPITFIRE will in most instances display a default
message.

The split-screen feature now includes information regarding the
graphics format (ASCII, Ansi, or RIP) selected by the caller.

In addition to the RIP graphics, SPITFIRE v3.4 has some other
features which will appeal to many Sysops. For instance, when a
caller logs on and opts to list new files; at the end of the listing
if the caller has flagged any files for download, the caller is given
the option of downloading the files prior to the Main Menu being
displayed. In the event the caller elects to download flagged files
at this time, the caller is prompted to select a file transfer
protocol and then given the option of logging off the BBS when the
download has been completed.

SPITFIRE now shells from memory when using the Sysop Configurable
commands from the Main Menu (SFMAIN.BAT), Message Menu (SFMESS.BAT)
and File Menu (SFFILE.BAT). In addition, SPITFIRE will shell from
memory when SFINIT.BAT, SFLOGON.BAT, SFSEC<x>.BAT, SFREMOTE.BAT, or
BADINIT.BAT are executed.

Another added feature is that SPITFIRE can now be configured to
Use International Characters from the Toggle SPITFIRE Switches window.
This feature allows Sysops to configure whether their BBS will allow
keyboard input of non-English characters with an ASCII value between
128 and 175. These characters are used in countries outside the
United States.

SPITFIRE has added support for up to 8 comm ports and allows the
Sysop to configure the IRQ that will be used for these.

Mike Woltz has written a utility which Sysops will use to register
their copy of SPITFIRE. SFPUTSN.COM will be distributed to all
registered SPITFIRE Sysops along with their personal registration
code. This will allow registered Sysops to upgrade to new versions
of SPITFIRE by using this file to insert the registration information
into the shareware version of SPITFIRE.

͸
 SPITFIRE V3.4 UPGRADE
;

As has been the practice with Buffalo Creek Software in the past,
SPITFIRE version 3.4 will be a free upgrade for registered SPITFIRE
Sysops who are still running SPITFIRE v3.3 as their primary Bulletin
Board Software.

There are three upgrade options available.

   1) Sysops may download the shareware version of SPITFIRE version 3.4,
SFPUTSN.ZIP and their unique registration key from Buffalo Creek's
       BBS at 515-225-8496.

   2) Sysops who wish to receive SPITFIRE version 3.4 on diskette should
       send $7.50 to:

                       Buffalo Creek Software
                       Attention: Mike Woltz
                       913 - 39th Street
                       West Des Moines, Iowa 50265

The fee is imposed for the sole purpose of covering the cost of
diskettes and mailing expenses. The diskette will include the
shareware distribution package, SFPUTSN.ZIP and their unique
        registration key.

    3. Sysops who wish to receive SPITFIRE version 3.4 on diskette and
a printed copy of the Appendum to version 3.3 documentation
should send $12.50 to the address listed above. The fee is
imposed for the sole purpose of covering costs of diskettes,
printing fees and mailing expenses. The Appendum is designed
to be used in conjunction with the SPITFIRE v3.3 documentation
and details features unique to SPITFIRE v3.4. The diskette
will include the shareware distribution package, SFPUTSN.ZIP
        and their unique registration key.

When to expect the release? Mike informs me that his work is finished
and that he has completed all coding changes that will be made. SPITFIRE
is ready to go! What remains is completing the distribution package. The
SPITFIRE documentation updates are already in the hands of the proofreaders.
Once they get back to me, pages will need to be set and the index will need
to be created. A help file for creating RIP screens (RIPTIPS) needs to be
written to include in the distribution package, as well as updating the
documentation for MKSFFBBS and a quick documentation file for SFPUTSN. So
for this reason, I am going to cut the newsletter a bit short (no utility
reviews) and concentrate on getting SPITFIRE v3.4 to you as quickly as
possible!!!

 RIP GRAPHICS HELPFUL HINTS
;

Spitfire And RIP Graphics Help And Information

With the recent introduction of RIP Graphics support to the
SPITFIRE BBS package I feel quite confident in saying that there will
be 1000's of questions. Among these will also be a number of
complaints that SPITFIRE does not support RIP Graphics properly.
There is no fact that could be further from the truth. As a member of
the BETA Team and as someone who has run a graphics oriented BBS for
3 years, I can tell you with great certainty and confidence that
SPITFIRE fully supports RIP Graphics. As a matter of fact it does so
BETTER than most BBS packages around. I am going to outline a number
of facts below that, I hope, will help you resolve any problems which
might occur.

RIP is a script based screen that is nothing more than
an ASCII text file. By reading the information files that are out
concerning the RIP protocol you can learn to build your screens with
a plain text editor. Because RIP is based on ASCII text it is HIGHLY
SENSITIVE TO LINE NOISE. Screens will appear to blow up, Icons will
disappear, and anything else you can imagine if as much as one
character is garbled in the transfer. The same screens will then work
without error the next time RIP is used, totally confusing you as you
are trying to "fix" it. If you cannot duplicate the exact problem
with a RIP screen each time it is used the problem is with your modem
or with line noise, NOT SPITFIRE.

RIP terminal programs are just becoming available at this time.
Your users cannot use RIP if their terminal program won't support it.
Only two Terminal Programs support RIP Graphics at this time, Qmodem
Pro 1.50 and RIPterm. I'd like to suggest that you request your user
use RIPterm if at all possible, it's a free program, and fully
understands RIP. Qmodem, while a rather nice program, will usually
blow up if it runs across an embedded sound command in a RIP screen.
RIPterm on the other hand, has the most sensitive built in Zmodem
protocol I've ever seen. This has been resolved somewhat with the
release of RIPterm 1.54.

                    The Screens Themselves

RIP screens themselves can be quite a headache if not drawn (or
created with your text editor) and saved properly. A RIP screen will
stay on a users display until another RIP screen comes along and
clears it. If a RIP screen does not start with a CLS command (usually
like this !|1K|*| ) the new RIP screen will overlay itself over the
top of the existing RIP screen and become a jumbled mess unless you
planned for it to overlay in this manner. This feature (or bug) can
allow the ability to create some very interesting screens if used
properly. RIP screens cannot be cleared by ANSI or ASCII screens.

RIP also provides the ability to allow the use of a defined Text
Window within a display screen. Any following ANSI or ASCII text or
screens can be displayed in the window. If you are having a problem
with ANSI and ASCII jumping up into your RIP screen and not
displaying properly, you have most likely not defined your Text
Window properly. As an added precaution to prevent this from
occurring, define your text window last. Text Window definitions
start something like this |w000U271510 , but the numbers may be
different depending on where your window is defined. PLEASE NOTE the
lower case 'w'. It's important that it be this way.

The new screens that SPITFIRE will now use takes advantage of this
Text Window feature. The screens are MAINCTRL.RIP, FILECTRL.RIP, and
MSGCTRL.RIP. Each screen is displayed after most, but not all of the
choices from the SPITFIRE menu they are named after. These screens
allow you to define a large Text Window in a RIP screen that all
SPITFIRE'S text and prompts may be displayed within. By defining a
series of buttons and creating mouse fields and assigning commands to
these buttons you can make your SPITFIRE BBS totally mouse driven.
You will see these RIP screens in use on Buffalo Creek BBS and many
others, including my own. For the best results I suggest that you
make the text window in these screens AT LEAST 25 lines long.

By careful planning of your screens and as your understanding of
RIP screens grows, you will find that you can create a BBS that is
COMPLETELY mouse driven from logon to logoff. Door games may even be
made to run in a Text Window, thus adding mouse support to even your
doors.

                          Icons

RIP Graphics also allow the use of icons which are similar to the
ones used in Windows. If you plan on using them you must make them
available for your users to download. RIP screens simply mark a
position on the screen where an icon is to be placed. It expects the
user to have these icons on hand and will look for them in the
directory on their hard drive that they designate. If your users see
the message Icon Not found on one of your menus that uses them it
means A: They don't have the icons you are using and need to download
them. B: They don't have the path to the Icons set properly and their
terminal package couldn't find them or C: The phone line noise got
them and their terminal package did not get the full command to place
the icon on the screen. Pressing enter to redisplay the screen will
resolve the last problem. The use of icons is what allows such
seemingly large and complicated screens to display so quickly in RIP.
In fact all you are sending across the line is the base or background
portion of your screens. The icons pop up from the users drive based
on requests built into the screens. Icons are great but require a
great deal of patience to implement.

I hope you will find this file of use as you start toward your
efforts toward adding the use of RIP graphics to your SPITFIRE BBS.
If you are having a problem please remember that SPITFIRE works just
fine with RIP graphics. It supports them with no problems and any
problem you encounter is likely the result of a problem with the
screen itself. If I can be of any help, feel free to contact me. On
FidoNet I can be found roaming the SPITFIRE conference or you could
logon to my BBS, Sleepless Knights BBS, and leave a message. If you
have a real problem that just can't be resolved I'll provide a voice
number for you to call. Or you can always try the old Snail Mail
routine at the address below. Good luck to all of you. I might also
be talked out of a copy of all my RIP screens if you talk nice.

 SPITFIRE BOARD-OF-THE-MONTH

                      Sleepless Knights BBS
                        Sysop Mike Weaver
                        FidoNet 1:3607/40
                          205-233-5730
                         Athens, Alabama

Sleepless Knights BBS began it's life as a part-time BBS called
the Dark Angel BBS on a Tandy TL 1000 using SPITFIRE 3.0 and a 2400
baud modem. It started, at first, as simply a way to practice door
game play to compete on one of the local full-time boards and
received it's name from a particularly nasty Space Ship Captain I
played in one of the doors. The sysop of that BBS, one John Grissett,
was running the local college BBS and helped me set up my own copy to
play with. Due to cutbacks he was forced to close the BBS and I
inherited his entire file base. A name change was in order due to the
sinister sound of the name and my wife and I settled on The Order Of
The Sleepless Knights BBS, soon shortened to just Sleepless Knights
BBS. The handle Dark Angel still lingers with me to this day.

Thanks to my wife's skill and talent with ANSI screens the board
quickly became known for it's colorful and constantly changing
graphics and screens. I became the first BBS to add FidoNet to my
system in Athens, Al. and the system has continued to grow to it's
present size of running on a 386 25mhz with 560 meg online, a CD-Rom,
and a 14400 modem.

During this time I developed a strong relationship with one of my
users, John Richardson, and he was quickly brought in as both friend
and Co-Sysop. His work toward our goal of serving the community has
helped make Sleepless Knights what it is today and shapes it's goals
toward the future.

About a year before I purchased my first computer and began
setting up my BBS I suffered a serious hand injury, which limited the
use of my left hand for a 4 year period. It was during this time that
Sleepless Knights BBS was started, many nights working with only one
hand and having many "Sleepless Nights" because of my hand. After 3
operations over a 4 year span I realized there were people in the
world with handicaps more severe than mine. With the help of a loving
wife and son, more friends than I thought I had, and The Grace Of God
I have recovered 80% use of my hand. But I will never forget those
people that I met during this time, each struggling to be as close to
"normal" as their handicaps allowed.

I believed that somewhere down the line computers would allow
these people an outlet into mainstream America where they would be on
equal terms with everyone. With the addition of RIP graphics to the
BBS scene I saw an opportunity to help. I contacted Mike Woltz, who
allowed me to become part of SPITFIRE's Beta Test Team. With his help
and patience I was able to develop a system of screens which would
allow any user to logon to a SPITFIRE BBS and from logon to logoff
run the entire BBS with a mouse. I believe this to be a first in
SPITFIRE's history and a wonderful ability for not only the
handicapped, but all users!

Future plans include the addition of a community information
message area that will be provided by a local radio station. As RIP
graphics progress we also plan to add a welcome screen displaying
information and pictures of missing children in the area. Over the
years I have looked at other BBS packages, but have never found one
that matches SPITFIRE's simplicity and straightforward approach to
operation. I have also never met a man like Mike Woltz, one always
willing to listen, explain, and help when needed. And a special
thanks to Ann Woltz who ALWAYS makes me feel like a family friend
when I call. I'm proud to be a part of the SPITFIRE Family. And the
most important thanks of all, to my loving wife Cathy and my best
buddy and son Brandon. I couldn't do it without you guys.

                      USRobotics Courier HST 14400

He was not born in a log cabin, but the Sysop behind the keyboard
is Daniel Fenimore. He is a professional painter by trade, among
other trades mastered in the ancient past such as wholesaling and
manufacturing. A family man, married some twenty years to wife
Linda, he has a 16 year old son Jason and a 12 year old daughter
Kristin.

Some years ago, Daniel met Robert Hardy, RIP, who introduced him
to ham radio and computers. Daniel is essentially self-taught, and
holds a broad spectrum of multi-disciplinary interests, ranging from
collecting and preserving rare Greek and Hebrew manuscripts and
books, to computing, the esoteric and most of all, helping and
teaching others.

This writer first met Daniel in chat mode, when he called into my
RBBS. Daniel was exploring communications, could hardly type and was
filled with countless questions. He learned the hard way, endless
hours of reading and fiddling, asking questions always; and along the
way, he explored DOS, ANSI codes, learned to type, and interact with
bulletin boards. He started teaching himself BASIC and C programming
languages, mastering batch files and com ports. There was a wide
chasm between learning to upload a file for the first time and
setting up one's own bulletin board. He persevered, and one day
there was a new SPITFIRE in New Jersey. And, BTW, his typing today
is exemplary.

The HOUSE BBS is the outgrowth of a exploration and learning
experience. It's been put to good use. It's served as an
inspiration and foundation to help high school classes set up their
own BBS, an informal center of learning for those in the neighborhood
seeking to develop marketable job skills in a depressed NJ economy, a
meeting ground for those studying amateur radio, and as a training
ground for Daniel to further his computer and Sysop skills. The BBS
has served as a meeting ground for people drawn to help others, or be
helped themselves. With the difficulty of working people finding
community colleges or affordable schools which teach DOS,
programming, and application programs, Daniel has spent countless
hours encouraging and helping others learn about computers.

The HOUSE BBS has been about education and helping others. Daniel
hopes the HOUSE BBS will also be a new meeting ground for those
interested in Greek and Hebrew MSS and who use CHIWRITER in the
ancient languages, or the Bible Word and Gramcord lexicographic
tools. Anyone out there willing to help network the few scholars who
are not yet an extinct species? Give Daniel a call. The HOUSE BBS is
a place to learn and explore, sometimes oneself.

The HOUSE BBS is presently running SpitFire v3.3 on a 40 MHz 386,
with an U.S. Robotics HST modem at 14.4Kbps. V.32bis is in the near
future. The board offers some 11 MB of SF utilities, as well as
files on the paranormal, UFOs, radio, shareware, etc. A clone
development system exists on Daniel's laptop, which has recently
helped fine tune a QWK mail door for future networking. The HOUSE
BBS is up 24 hours at (609)735-0618 in the historic town of Browns
Mills, NJ.

Daniel reports: "Like many of you I looked at other BBS programs
and of course the rest is history being a SPITFIRE Sysop for better
then 2 years now (SF330878). SPITFIRE, in my opinion, is the most
full featured, easy to operate and maintain Bulletin Board System
available on the market to date. Mike and his staff have done a
great job in creating and updating SPITFIRE. I am proud to be a
registered user of SPITFIRE and agree with Mike, that SPITFIRE sysops
are TOP SHELF PEOPLE".
