    For the intermediate to advanced C programmer, a very useful text and 
    reference to the language.  Many good example programs.  Explanations
    very lucid.  Includes brief intro to C++.  Generic ANSI C, but most
    examples in Turbo C. 

Brodie, Leo: STARTING FORTH, Prentice-Hall, 1981, ISBN 0-13-842922-7.
    An excellent way to learn FORTH.  The book is easy to understand,
    interesting, and amusing.

DeVoney, Chris: USING PCDOS, Que Corp., 1987, ISBN 0-88022-335-9, $22.95.
    Still the best tutorial/reference on DOS for all you dinosaurs (bless
    you!) who still prefer it to GUI abominations.

Hafner, Katie and John Markoff: CYBERPUNK, OUTLAWS AND HACKERS ON THE 
COMPUTER FRONTIER, Touchstone, 1991, ISBN 0-671-77879-X, $12.00.
    Starts where HACKERS and  THE CUCKOO'S EGG (see below) leave off. A 
    detailed and entertaining account of the new generation of hackers.

Hargrave, Bonnie J. and Ted Dunning: BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER ACCESSORIES AND

    Good book about building cables, networking, & software for communications
    & port control. 

Kidder, Tracy: THE SOUL OF A NEW MACHINE, Avon Books, 1982, 
ISBN 0-380-59931-7, $3.95.
    The retelling of how a group of young programmers and engineers working
    against time and the odds created an advanced minicomputer at DEC. A 
    gripping and enjoyable story that gives an insider's view of the 
    industry.

Kitsz, Dennis Bathory: THE CUSTOM TRS-80 & OTHER MYSTERIES, IJG Inc., 1982,
ISBN 0-936200-02-2 [out of print].
    A out-of-print love poem to an out-of-production computer.  Surprisingly
    complete collection of articles, essays, data sheets, and schematics
    covering hardware and software modification to the "classic" Model I 
    TRS-80. Not of much practical use any more (unless you can get a hold of
    a still commonly available used "Trash 80" at a flea market), but still
    wonderfully educational and enjoyable to browse and read. 

Lafore, Robert: OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING IN TURBO C++, Waite Group Press,
1991, ISBN 1-878739-06-02, $26.95.
    An easy introductory level primer for the would-be C++ programmer.  The
    author claims that no previous knowledge of C is necessary.  Not quite
    the case, but almost.  Very well written and mostly free of jargon.
    For those wanting to learn C++, this is the first book to get. 
    Excellent++.

Levy, David: HACKERS, HEROES OF THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION, Anchor/Doubleday,

     Entertaining and educational description of the Hacker subculture and
     its roots in the early days of microcomputer development.

Libes, Don: OBFUSCATED C AND OTHER MYSTERIES, John Wiley & Sons, 1993, 
ISBN 0-471-57805-3, $39.95 [book/disk combo].
     A collection of amusing and informative source code.  Includes yearly
     winners of the contest for the most confused and screwed-up C programs.
     Will make you laugh, and teach as it does.

Mayer, Herbert G.: ADVANCED C PROGRAMMING ON THE IBM PC, Windcrest Books,
1989, ISBN 0-8306-9363-7, $26.95.
    An idea-filled book for the intermediate to advanced programmer.  Superb 
    coverage of algorithms, quirks of the language, and even amusements.
    Very readable and enjoyable for the author's dry sense of humor, if
    nothing else. Very highly recommended. 

Norton, Peter: THE PETER NORTON PROGRAMMER'S GUIDE TO THE IBM PC, Microsoft

     The indispensable reference for interrupts, memory map, etc.

Osborne, Adam: AN INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTERS - VOL. II, SOME REAL

     One of the first references to CPU's and support chips, it is still
     a very useful guide for data and applications involving CPU logic.

Schild, Herb: BORN TO CODE IN C, Osborn McGraw Hill, 1989,

     Profiles of veteran C programmers and annotated source code of
     programming projects make this an enlightening and readable
     addition to anyone's programming library.

Stoll, Cliff: THE CUCKOO'S EGG, Pocket Books, 1990, ISBN 0-671-72688-9, 
$5.95.
     A computer systems manager on the convoluted trail of a hacker.  Very
     educational and enjoyable reading.

Waite, Mitchell, Stephen Prata, and Donald Martin, C PRIMER PLUS, Waite Group

     Probably the best of the introductions to C.  Extensive coverage for
     a primer.  New edition now available.
