    ViewDoc(tm) Documentation Version 1.0 July 19, 1994
"ViewDoc" is a trademark of RSE Incorporated.

  * What is ViewDoc?

ViewDoc is a program that makes it much easier for your readers to
read your documents. It not only provides an easy to use viewing
interface with mouse support and "find" and "print" functions but
ViewDoc also lets you easily incorporate menus into your
documentation that take the reader exactly where they want to go.
And it's tiny, less than 5K. And what's more, you'll probably be
able to convert your files in less than five minutes and they still
    remain compatible with other viewers.

  * ViewDoc in action

This file is ViewDoc compatible. If you're not using ViewDoc to view
it then do so by entering "viewdoc" (or "viewdoc /m" if non-color
    display) at the DOS prompt.

Notice the menus. If you're using a mouse, just click on the topic
you want to go to. If no mouse, then use the cursor keys to hi-lite
the desired topic and press Enter.

Although we didn't do so in this document, your menus can pop-up
other menu's, and those selections can pop-up others, up to 8 levels
    deep.

Once in the file you have access to "find", "find next" and "print"
functions. To back out to the last menu press Escape, the right
mouse button, or click on "Escape".

You can also use PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, and the cursor keys to
    navigate through the file.

  * Making your files ViewDoc compatible

    Follow these easy steps:

    1. Make sure the first line in your document is:

           .This file is ViewDoc(tm) compatible

Make the last character in this line the character you will use to
designate items that appear in the menu. For example, notice the
first line in this file. The last character is an asterisk which is
what we are using as the "menu designator". Make your designator a
character that doesn't currently occur in your file. You can use
characters with an ASCII value greater that 128 by holding down the
Alt key while entering the ASCII number on the numeric keypad. Some
    favorites are (alt-250) and (alt-254).

    2. Make the second line of your file the message you want to appear
at the bottom of the menu screens.

    3. Put the "menu designator" at the start of each heading in your
file. Everything on the line following the desigator becomes a menu
item. If you have sub-headings under your headings then put two
designators at the start of each sub-heading, three designators at
the start of each sub-sub-head, and so on.

    4. When you're done modifying your file then run CONFIG.COM by
entering "config" at the DOS prompt.

        A. Select your colors by entering the number of the color you
desire. If you want to leave the default colors just press
            Enter without inputting a number.

        B. Input the name of the file you want ViewDoc to view.

    5. Enter "viewdoc" and test things out.

    Tough huh?

NOTE: Any time ViewDoc encounters a new ViewDoc compatable file it
creates a corresponding file with a ".TOC" extension where it stores
the menu information. Whenever you make changes to your file make
sure you delete the corresponding .TOC file or your menus won't be
    correct.

If you want to rename VIEWDOC.COM to something else you may do so as
long as you retain the .COM extension and you do so after you CONFIG
it. If you ever need to change its configuraton you'll need to
rename it back to VIEWDOC.COM before running CONFIG.

  * How much?

ViewDoc is shareware, which in this case means a couple of things:
These programs came as a single file, either as a .ZIP file or as a
self-extracting .EXE file. You can distribute that file freely as
long as you don't modify it in any way. You cannot distribute the
    files individually.

Being shareware also means you have up to 30 days to evaluate ViewDoc
before you decide whether you want to purchase it or not.

All the ViewDoc files are copyrighted 1994 by RSE Incorporated. You
may not alter them in any way. In addition, the phrase ".This file
is ViewDoc(tm) compatible" is copyrighted. You cannot distribute any
files with that phrase in it without our permission.

All this means is that if you want to distribute ViewDoc compatible
files then you need to register. Registration is $25 per file, or
$59 for an unlimited license to modify any or all of the files your
company owns. Obviously if you want to make more than two file
ViewDoc compatible then the unlimited license makes more sense.

 * What you get when you register

    When you register you'll get:

    1. Permission to distribute file(s) modified to be ViewDoc
compatible. (In other words, permission to use the copyrighted
phrase ".This file is ViewDoc compatible" within your documents.)

    2. Removal of the "please register" message that appears when
VIEWDOC.COM exits, to be replaced with a short message saying
the software is distributed under license to your company.

    3. An unlimited license to distribute VIEWDOC.COM with your file(s).

    4. The latest versions of some of our other software including
