INTERNET ACCESS VIA THE ALASKA COMPUTER SOCIETY

The University of Alaska is offering The Alaska Computer
Society members access to the University of Alaska Computer
Network (UACN). For a nominal monthly fee we would have
access to the following services:

UACN Mail (statewide e-mail system)
Internet e-mail, worldwide
Internet FTP/Gopher services, Telenet, etc.
Usenet (topical message areas)

The monthly rates are:

01-25 accounts: $20/month/account
26-49 accounts: $15/month/account
50+ accounts: $10/month/account

I don't think we will have any problem obtaining 50+
accounts.

To my understanding access will be through local phone
lines and the university will be handling the billing.

Applications and further information will be available at
the next general meeting which will be on February 10th. A
representative from Intuit will be here talking about Quicken
for DOS and Windows. The meeting will be held at Providence
Hospital in the East auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The University is offering this service to the group
because of its non-profit status, you will need to be a
member of The Alaska Computer Society to apply. Your annual
membership contribution to The Alaska Computer Society is a
well spent, tax deductible $25 per year. Benefits include:

. a monthly newsletter
. access to certain areas on the ACS BBS
. discounts on shareware diskettes
. participate in monthly meeting door prize drawings
. attend special seminars and workshops
. participate in group purchases
. participate in software evaluations
. and now applications for accounts in the University of
  Alaska Computer Network.

           ALASKA INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LIBRARY

Alaska Information Technology Library has network-style lines up and
working now. SL/IP, CSL/IP, PPP, or TCP/IP protocols available for
both dial-up or leased lines. All Internet services available.
Pricing from $25.00 a month and up.

Call Alaska Information Technology Library at (907) 278-1787 and ask
for Internet Access.

Special note to Sysops: We have decided not to offer shell or BBS
style services at AKITL. We figure that there are enough BBS owners
out there who are willing to fill the demand. As a result, we will
offer UUCP feeds of mail and news at a reasonable price. Also, if you
use SL/IP or TCP/IP, give us a call and we can make you a deal.

                    INTERNET ALASKA, INC.

Internet Alaska, Inc.
4050 Lake Otis Parkway, Suite 107A
Anchorage, AK 99508
907-562-4638

Availability of Service

Internet Alaska, Inc. will open to the public on June 1, 1994.

Dial-up Info

At startup, we will provide 24 dial-up lines. As user and traffic
demand warrant, we will increase the number of dial-up lines. ATU
requires 30 days to install additional phone circuits (we order a T1 at
a time), so please order as early as possible if you intend to actually
logon to the Internet on June 1.

Modem Info

High speed V.fast (28.8 Kbps, 115.2 Kbps compressed) modems are
supported. To maximize the use of dial-up lines, we do not support
modems running below 9600 baud. We are using Microcom Deskporte Fast
modems, which are the only modems that provide 28.8K throughput through
Windows (using the parallel port rather than the serial port). They
are also the least expensive modem from a major manufacturer.

Dedicated Access

Higher speed direct connections are available. Although ISDN
services are not available from ATU, we can provide Internet access
using Switched 56 or T1 within Anchorage. Call at least one month
before you require a high speed connection - that is ATU's lead time,
not ours! Pricing is location-dependent.

Client Support

We support Windows/DOS, Macintosh, Amiga, UNIX, and X terminal client
(as in client-server) software. For instance, if you run Mosaic (World
Wide Web), E-mail, News, Archie, or other client software on your
computer you will be able to directly access Internet-based server
software.

It is important to note that we are providing much more than a
bulletin board. Although users can logon using communications packages
like ProComm+ for Windows or Versaterm for the Mac, this will not allow
them to take advantage of our enhanced services.

Performance is Built in

The first Internet Alaska node is designed for performance, capacity,
and growth. To minimize the primary recurring cost, long distance
bandwidth, we are employing a number of strategies.

we provide local file services; all customers will have at least 10
MB of disk space for personal use

- we provide a jukebox for storage of public domain archives

- our modems are connected to our host using high speed serial
concentrators

- we will switch to an inexpensive satellite feed for news later this
summer

- our multi-processor UNIX workstation will be loaded with RAM as the
number of users increases

- we provide access via PPP (preferred) and SLIP, so you can become a
full Internet node

    "Unlimited" access time
"Unlimited" disk space (10 MB/person minimum)
e-mail, WWW, gopher, news, and all standard Internet applications
(ftp, telnet,...)

At this time, only six month memberships (one month free) are being
accepted.

"Unlimited" resources are not Unlimited!! We will manage our network
to ensure all of our customers have good access to all of our
resources, including, but not limited to:

- disconnecting clients who park on a line (i.e., connected but not
using services)

- disconnecting clients who abuse any resource (disk space,
long-distance line)

- canceling subscriptions of customers who continually abuse shared
resources

Until we have access to a local point of presence (POP), until we have
hundreds of dial-up lines, and until our optical jukebox arrives and we
have unlimited disk space, we will actively manage our shared resources.

We appreciate your cooperation in creating the best Internet access
service anywhere. Please don't abuse our liberal policies, and we in
turn will continue to grow our system and our services as quickly as
possible.
