                      LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Wow, here we are . . . September already! Actually, for reasons
I'll expand on in a bit, I am writing this on August 15, so September is
still half a month away. Believe me, it won't be long until we are smack
dab in the middle of the holiday season again!

It's cloudy and wet outside. I haven't seen the sun in many days, but
that is normal in this Seattle/Tacoma area. Have I mentioned yet that The
NASA MLP sources the SciFacNet meteorology and seismology conferences? Thought
I would throw that in since we were talking about the weather.

I have to apologize for DSNEWS10 being so short. Most of you are
aware that Kevin Lawrence and I were hit by a car while test driving a
motorcycle, and we were both injured rather severely. I was in the hospital
for a few weeks and when I got out, DSNEWS was due out. I had no time to work
on it, and, I doubt I could have done any good anyway. So, instead, I just
released a very short version of it and started working on this one. I am
writing this one a bit early because (1) I have to go back to the hospital
for surgery on August 24-27 and (2) I have a baby due August 30! We know
the baby will be a girl, and you'll no doubt find out her name later on in
this newsletter as it is starting to look like she'll be born before this
letter is over. Mary's doctor goes on vacation August 25 and I go back
into the hospital August 24, so she would kind of like to have the baby
BEFORE all this happens. An ultrasound will be done this Thursday, and if
the baby looks ready to go, Mary will be admitted to Harrison and labor will
be induced, or she'll just go with another C-section. That way, I'll get
to see the baby before I go to surgery, and Mary will have a few quiet days
with the baby following her birth. (QUIET??? Not with Erica in the house
<G> :)

Gosh, now I'm depressing myself! Many of you know that while I have
been flat on my back or in a wheelchair (as I am now), I've been compiling
a report on Mount Rainier (yes, that HUGE mountain you see when you look
out a south window if you live up here.) Mount Rainier is actually a
dormant volcano on the verge of waking up! The USGS keeps a "volcano watch"
on Rainier and residents of Tacoma and other nearby cities routinely
practice "volcano drills." I thought it would be a fun project to study
Rainier, and what may happen WHEN she blows! That report should be finished
very soon, and I encourage you to take a look at it. I'll have more on this
a bit later in the newsletter! Rainier has been asleep for 111 years. By
contrast, Mt. St. Helens slept for 123 years before waking up in 1980.

Thanks to you all . . . see ya next month! :) Jim/SYSOP

Most of you know that I was involved in a serious motorcycle
accident the evening of July 20, 1993. Since then, I have been in near
continuous pain and have undergone several painful surgeries, released
from the most recent one August 27, 1993.

With all this going on, a little bundle of joy is the best one can
hope for. With my upcoming surgery date and a planned vacation by Mary's
doctor, we became concerned that Marina would be born (1) while I was in
Seattle for surgery (an hour away, at best) or (2) while her doctor was
on vacation.

We decided to plan a C-section on the 20th of August, and we did. Marina
was due at 11:30 a.m. We were all in place in the operating room, including
my mom, who has been very helpful to us lately and requested that she be
allowed to witness the birth of ONE of her granddaughters, at least!
The doctor was late.

As it turned out, it was a very easy birth, with Marina arriving
at 12:23 pm, nearly an hour late! Welcome, Marina, to our messed up world!

Bill and I had been at odds at times in the past, but we generally

*HIGHLY* instrumental in helping start a struggling young BBS, The NASA

Bill Velez will be missed very much and may he run the BEST BBS

                     MOUNT RAINIER AND "THE ROCK"

"THE ROCK IS GONNA FALL ON US!"
He woke with a start.
And he ran to his mother
The fear dark in his heart.
And he told her of the vision
That he was sure he'd seen
But she said "Go back to sleep, son,
You're having a bad dream.

"Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground
Remember Chicken Little said the sky was fallin' down
Well, nothin' ever came of that
The world still whirls around."

"THE ROCK IS GONNA FALL ON US!"
He stood and told the class
The professor put his chalk down
And peered out through his glasses
But he went on and said, "I've seen it high up on the hill-
If it doesn't fall this year
Then very soon it will."

(The professor remarks:)
"Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won't crumble to the ground
We've more important studies than
Your fantasies and fears
Everybody knows that rock's been perched
Up there a hundred thousand years."

"THE ROCK IS GONNA FALL ON US!"
He told the magistrate,
"I believe that we can stop it,
but the time is getting late. You see,
I've done all the research
My plans are all complete--"
He was showing them contingencies
When they showed him to the street.

(They said:)
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground
Everybody knows of those who say the end is near
Everybody knows that life goes on
As usual 'round here."

He went up on the mountain beside the giant stone
They knew he wasn't sane
So they left him all alone.
He'd given up enlisting help
For there was no one else
He spent his days devising ways to stop the rock himself.

One night while he was working
Building braces on the ledge
The ground began to rumble,
The rock tumbled off the edge.

"THE ROCK IS GONNA FALL ON US!
Brother, you'll be crushed!"
And, indeed, the rock was moving,
Crumbling all the dust.
He ran under it in one last hope
That he could add a prop
And as he disappeared
The rock
Came to
A stop.

The people ran into the street
But all was still
The rock seemed where it always was,
Or where it always will be.
When someone asked where he had gone
They said, "Oh, he was daft.
Who cares about that crazy fool!"
And then they'd start to laugh.

But high up on the mountain
When the wind is hitting it.
If you're watching very closely,
the
rock
slips
a
little
bit.

Just like it does each year under the Puget Sound. :)

Many of you are aware of the seismicity of the Puget Sound area.
We are number FOUR in the country, at risk of great earthquakes, and, as
Mount Saint Helens showed us, violent volcanic action. The University
of Washington is keeping a "Volcano Watch" on Mount Rainier even as you
read this.

I am now putting together a VERY COMPREHENSIVE report on Mount Rainier,
that covers how it was born (on a raised, flat plateau), how it grew
and how it may die. Mount Rainier has slept for 111 years and is slowly
waking up. Someday, she will burp again. Steam has issued from her craters
in the not too distant past. Scientists with seismometers and tiltometers
are now keeping a close eye under her.

The song says "The rock slips a little bit." I can tell you all
about subduction and plate tectonics, and probably bore you right off to sleep.

But, IT IS TRUE THAT THE GROUND YOU ARE SITTING ON NOW IS VERY
VOLATILE, AND IT IS MOVING! A giant plate in the Pacific Ocean, called the
Juan De Fuca plate is subducting (sliding underneath) the North American
Plate (the one you are sitting on). This moves several inches a year in
places, a few centimeters a year in others. Seismic energy builds and builds
in places. Someday, something may slip or give with all that stored energy.

When that happens, you may find yourself in the middle OF THE LARGEST
EARTHQUAKE TO EVER HIT THE UNITED STATES! Larger than even California's
quakes! This is not speculation or guesswork, or sensationalism designed to
sell this (totally free) newsletter. THIS COULD HAPPEN! And that doesn't
even include the more likely even of surface quakes, which could be
powerful in themselves.

STAY INFORMED! BE PREPARED! This can't be stressed enough. Official
1985 estimates for a great quake in the Seattle area put it at over 2,000 DEAD
AND 4,000 injured. These estimates have been withdrawn, since they are old,
and, consequently, too old.

The NASA MLP will always have the information YOU need to prepare
and survive. Please, take a few moments today to evaluate your living
quarters and your lifestyle. Would YOU survive? Does your family have
an emergency (fire, earthquake) evacuation plan? Do you know how to
shut off the gas, electricity and water to your home? If not, LEARN HOW
TO DO THAT TODAY. Consider this: when a quake hits, gas lines get broken
and a majority of injury, damage and death comes from the resulting fires.

There has been a lot of attention lately to the failed Mars Observer
Mission. The NASA MLP has carried MARS OBSERVER MISSION STATUS REPORTS from
day one. There are also continuously updated status reports on Galileo and
all our other planetary probes, for those of you who were not aware of this!
Here, since it is current and topical, is a short summation of what has
been happening with the Mars Observer Spacecraft.

                  MARS OBSERVER MISSION STATUS
                 5:30 p.m. PDT, August 27, 1993

The Mars Observer flight team continued today to listen for
any response from the spacecraft, three days after it was set to
enter orbit around Mars. At this time communication has not been
reestablished.

The command sequence to "reboot" the spacecraft's central
computer, sent at 4:30 a.m. PDT this morning (Aug. 27), would
place the spacecraft in "safe mode," in which state it would
listen for commands from the ground for 64 hours. If, at the end
of this interval, it had not heard from the ground, a "phone
home" command would be executed on the spacecraft.

If the command to "cold boot" the spacecraft's central
computer system this morning was successful, the spacecraft would
have entered a safing mode. This mode assumes there is a
hardware problem aboard the spacecraft. (The contingency mode
that the spacecraft was switching to during its cruise to Mars
assumed there was a software problem on board.)

Late Friday, the flight team was deciding whether to allow
the 64-hour safing mode program to clock out before considering
sending other commands to the spacecraft this weekend. Commands
sent prior to that 64-hour safing interval could interrupt the
safe mode interval and reset the clock to begin another 64-hour
countdown.

In the team's attempts to regain communications with Mars
Observer, a number of failure scenarios have been identified. At
this time, however, NASA does not know what caused the loss of
communication, nor can the agency assign blame to any particular
part or process.

NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin yesterday named Dr. Timothy
Coffey to head the Mars Observer investigation board. Dr. Coffey
is currently director of research at the Naval Research
Laboratory in Washington, D.C.

It is NASA's standard policy to implement an independent
review when there is cause to believe that a mission's primary
objective cannot be met.

                  MARS OBSERVER MISSION STATUS
                         August 27, 1993
                10:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time

The Mars Observer flight team has not been able to
reestablish communication with the spacecraft despite repeated
efforts to prompt the spacecraft to respond.

A command sequence to "reboot" the spacecraft's central
computer was sent at 1:07 a.m. PDT on Aug. 27. Commands are sent
to the spacecraft assuming it is in orbit around Mars, and to
another area of the sky assuming the spacecraft flew by Mars and
is now in a heliocentric orbit around the sun. The commands sent
to the coordinates of the heliocentric orbit at 1:07 a.m. were
reradiated at 4:30 a.m. to the spacecraft had it entered orbit
around Mars.

If the command to "cold boot" the spacecraft's central
computer system was successful, the spacecraft would enter a
safing mode. This mode is more serious than the contingency mode
that Mars Observer was switching to during its cruise to Mars.
Safe mode is entered in response to a spacecraft hardware
anomaly.

Flight controllers will wait 65 hours to hear back from the
spacecraft.

With that option exercised, the team will have utilized all
presently understood recovery approaches. They would then begin
a "listen only" vigil in the event that the spacecraft's on-board
fault protection would be able to restore communication with the
ground.

                     NASA MLP Board Gossip!!!

Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm SORRY you had to PAGE-DOWN through
all that Earthquake and NASA stuff to get to the "good part."... (No I'm not!)

Did you know that there is a DSNEWS conference on The NASA MLP where
you can make complaints (and REALLY get me mad :) or make suggestions or
contributions, or even leave YOUR gossip??? So, come on, don't make me write
the DSNEWS files on my own! It's a lot of work and I've been doing this for
nearly a YEAR! Give me some help! Come on, I'm a wheelchair-bound HANDICAP
now for cryin' out loud! Will SOMEONE please help out a LITTLE??? Hehehehe,
I can grovel like STAN KING, huh? <G>

MLP GOSSIP!!!MLP GOSSIP!!!MLP GOSSIP!!!MLP GOSSIP!!!MLP GOSSIP!!!MLP GOSSIP!!!

FLETCHER BONDS is back for awhile...Rumor is that he lives in Seattle now...
Drop him a note if you get the time...

RB MARTINEZ supposedly moved back to Kentucky. No one has complained yet...

KHRISTA WEBB is being nice enough to lend me a modem (since no one else
offered) since Stan King is taking his back. Node One runs on borrowed modems.
When they get taken back and no one offers a new one, the node goes down and
only subscribers can get through on Node Two for awhile. Node One is supported
only by the board's non-supporters, believe it or not! :) Thanks, KHRISTA!

ANDRADE was in and out for awhile. Haven't seen her or SCOTT BOONE lately, but
I know that if you call the LimeLight BBS :) PAUL ZIMMERMAN is the sysop
there; tell him DarkStar sent ya over, and he'll treat you downright well!

WILLIAM ROUNTREE, of Prime Base BBS of Norfolk, Virginia (formerly, my
next door neighbor) says "Hello to all you NASA MLP People!"

I would like to say "Hello to all you PARTEX BBS PEOPLE in Jacksonville, Fl!"

LEE MOBERG, sysop of Nobodeez Perfekt (my current neighbor) finally came home
when the Nimitz (big aircraft carrier) pulled in. It was nice to see Lee
again.

RON WRIGHT, our local telephone wizard, is doing well. Ron called and visited
me in the hospital several times. I really appreciated that.

STAN KING

KEVIN LAWRENCE is recovering from his injuries a HECK of a lot faster than I
am! Most of you know that Kevin was my passenger on the motorcycle when we
got hit. Join Conference 12 and get into his online AD&D game.... :)

TRISH MENDENHALL is back from some sort of vacation. I haven't been able to
talk with her much (since my butt cramps when I sit and type too long) but I
hope to hear more about it. Maybe if it was fun enough, she'll go into the
DSNEWS conference and write a summary of her vacation for the next
newsletter. Who knows? (But please, Trish, not if it was REALLY boring :)

RICHARD CRONISTER is one of the board's newer callers, and is also a friend of
mine from work. Incidentally, it is *HIS* bike I wrecked! It's for sale, by
the way, CHEAP, but it might need a little work! And, my doctor would be
VERY interested if you find the two inches of bone missing out of my leg. It
might be in the engine somewhere!

MARK MCBRIDE I've seen his name a time or two and seen him log on a time or
two, but haven't heard much from him. He IS around, though. :)

THUD ROOTER is getting mad at people who quote too much and then leave
a one or two word message.

CINDY EMPOLEN has not called in a long time. Anyone know why?

There's not a lot of gossip...it was a VERY slow month on the BBS and with
me in and out of the hospitals, I just wasn't around too much to catch what's
been going on. So, if I left your important something-or-other out, please
don't be ***too*** mad :)

                  RESTORATION POINT FIELD TRIP

The NASA MLP BBS frequenty sponsors field trips for those interested
in attending. It is a great way to have fun and to meet people. We
scheduled a Field Trip for July 22 to Restoration Point, advertised it nation
wide and really got a lot of interest built up. Then, I was hit by a car on
July 20 and was near-fatally injured, just TWO DAYS beforehand.

I AM SORRY, TERRIBLY SORRY if any of you made the trip to Bainbridge
to meet the rest of us and we were not there. We tried to get messages of
cancellation out on the networks in time, but it may not have worked.

There are future field trips planned to Mount Rainier, and Mount
Saint Helens. These were to be in August, but will have to wait until I can
walk again. They will probably be next summer. However, we may plan some
small field trips over in the Seattle area during the winter months if
we can come up with something to do. Unofficial MLP field trips happen all
the time, to the zoo, parks, etc. The Official Field Trips all have a
Seismology/Geology/NASA angle to them, so, for a wintertime Seattle
field trip . . . any ideas? :)

Will bring us a FULL YEAR AROUND. The NASA MLP has been around longer
than a year, but it was nearly a year ago that I decided the board was
significant enough to merit a monthly newsmagazine. I thank you all for
you support of this, for downloading these issues, reading them, and
spreading them around. We've come a long way in a year, as those of you
who've been around since the beginning know. There've been the ups and
the downs. I look forward to being with you all again next month in
DSNEWS12. Let's make the Anniversary Issue special! Join the DSNEWS
conference and contribute a little something. Maybe a personal reflection
on what the MLP means to you, or friends you've made, or whatever.

Thanks to each and every one of you for helping make The NASA MLP the best
BBS in Kitsap County, hands down. Thanks!

   Jim Coleman

I've set up a CASCADE RANGE VOLCANO file directory, and am now
DESPERATELY looking for volcano files. These may be text files
or GIF or PCX files! Please keep your eyes open for me in your
neck of the woods. I prefer GIFS of the Cascade Range volcanoes, Mount
Shasta, Hood, Baker, St. Helens, Rainier, etc. but any volcanoes are
welcomed. Please send what you find to me... Here's what I have so
far:
