                          The Pager! - What is It?

The Pager! is a program that will call a user's pager (either a Display Pager
or Alpha Pager) to notify them that they have new mail waiting or that someone
on the system is trying to find them. The Pager! has many variables and
quite a few safety features.

The Pager! requires TBBS v2.3, TDBS v1.2 and InterChange. It also needs a
phone line with a modem that can make outgoing calls. This line can be any
current user line and does not need to be a special line.

The Pager! is the first of its kind that will page a user on a pager for TBBS.
We have a few other ideas for why pages should go out and some of them will
show up in future versions and/or custom versions. If you have an idea, or
a need for The Pager!, please contact us.
Some uses that we have thought of are:

 POS Software - When a Vendor gets an order s/he will get a page.
 Critical Software Updates - Page the User and let them know it is available
 System Status - Page the Sysop with 'error codes' on the system's operations
 Confirmation Codes - For many reasons
   ...and whatever you let us know about!

The Pager! will rebuild any missing INX file, or DBF file. If any of these
are missing when the program loads it will rebuild them. You have a lockout
list in case you allow a group in The Pager! that are all members and a few
of them take advantage of the program to harass another caller. Add their
name to the lockout list and they will not be able to enter the program at
all. They will get a message saying "You have been locked out. If you
have a question please leave a message to the sysop. Would you like to leave
that message now? Y/N" The message would go to the message base you have
defined as Sysop Private Mail with the subject of "Lockout/Pager". You will
know right away what they are talking about.

The Pager! will watch for numbers that can cause problems. If "0" or "1" is
the first number in either the areacode or the seven digit phone number, a
message will tell them that the pager number is not valid. The same is true
for "011" and "911." If you think another number should be scanned for,
please let us know.

When a user pages another user, the program will ask for a reason for the page.
If the user receiving the page has the toggle on, the page will be sent and
a message like this will be sent via Private EMail also:

There are quite a few more screens - and they are fairly self explained.

                          Setup And Installation

The TPG will install itself. If you run the TPG file and the operating files
are not found, it will start the installation process. During the first run,
you will get a message asking if you are installing the program for the first
time. You should know the Message to Sysop Message base and your local
private EMail Message base names from CEDIT.

  Add a menu item like the following (Preferably on your Communications menu):

         Entry:
         Priv=60
         KEY=^@ TYPE=200 Opt Data=D:\PAGER\PAGER /q

        This is what will call the program and run it 'normally'.

  NOTE: Make sure that YOU are the first person to run this program. The
        first user in the program will be asked the config information.

Add a GHOST Event as follows (See pages 5-15,5-16 of your TBBS 2.3 Manual):

         Entry:
         Priv=0
         KEY=^@ TYPE=200 Opt Data=D:\PAGER\PAGER /q && SCAN

You can add this event in your TIMS.CTL BUT a Ghost Manager would be the best
way around to handle ghost events.

In your TIMS.CTL file (Only if you do not have a ghost manager) add:

DOTBBS 15 200 "D:\PAGER\PAGER /q && SCAN"
       -- --- ------------------------- > Full path and program name with
       |    \                                   && SCAN
       |     \- Type 200
        \- Runs every 15 mins

In a Ghost Manager have the event run every 15 mins or as offen as you feel it
is necessary to Scan for New Mail and perform the calls to the pager. Calls
only take place after the scan is run or look under other options on TPG file.

The First time you run the Program you will see:

        3 - Lets look at each of the questions.
            A - This will be decided during the install and the path the
                program finds is usually ok. It is the path that the
                PAGER.TPG and it's file reside.

            B - This is the Privilege level that is need to access the
                program. If a User does not have this level or higher they
                see the following:

           C - The Privilege level for the Sysop Options. Anyone with the
           level or higher will gain access to ALL of the Sysop Options.

           D - What do you dial to get a long distance call out. Enter this
           even if you DO NOT want to have the program call long distance.
           See F if you do not want The Pager to make ANY long distance calls.

           E - Enter the phone lines with modems that The Pager can use to
           make outgoing calls. It will use them in the order you list. If
           you have lines one through seven and want to start at the top enter
           something like : 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 If you don't care and have 36
           lines, enter: 1-36 and so. It would be best tho to start at the
           higher number and go down to avoid collisions with incoming calls.

           F - Do you want The Pager to Allow Long Distance Dialing when
           making pages. If you said NO, the user will not be allowed to
           enter a number that is out of the area code or one that uses a 1
           or 911 as the first part of the number. We do check for 911,1,0 in
           both the areacode and the dial preface and do not allow 911 or 0
           even if long distance is allowed.

           G - What is the Number/Code that you would like to have display on
           ALL pagers as a default. This would usually be the BBSes main
           phone number for ease but can be whatever you want.

           H - This is the EXIT to BBS Key that will appear on the main
           program screen. Some like "-" and some like "Q" and some like "X"
           and so on. Pick what is uniform with your system.

           I - IMPORTANCE This is the path to your Userlog.bbs file. You
           must have the trailing \ as well. If your main tbbs directory is
           C:\TBBS then enter C:\TBBS\ as the path here.

           J - Your local areacode. Simple one :)

           K - Is it ok for user to pick what number they want to appear on
           their pager when they get a page from The Pager. By Default the
           CODE is set with option G above, BUT some users would like to have
           111 or 123 or 1234567 or BBSNUMBER 123 and so on. This option just
           lets them set the number that will appear on their pager when The
           pager Calls. Say Y if you're not sure

           L - The Message base for messages to yourself, most systems this is
           MSG TO SYSOP but it is whatever is defined as your message base.

           M - The Message base for Private Messages to Users, most systems
           this is MAILBOX or EMAIL but is whatever is defined as the
           Private EMail Mailbox.

To VIEW the data in the Pagelog file, use the following format:

SYSEDIT and VIEW Options are also available on the main screen for users

The GHOST Event that should run every 15 mins or so... see above.

         Entry:
         KEY=^@ TYPE=200 Opt Data=D:\PAGER\PAGER /q && SCAN

Another GHOST Event that is NOT REQUIRED but will help get the calls out
faster is:

         Entry:
         KEY=^@ TYPE=200 Opt Data=D:\PAGER\PAGER /q && CALL

CALL will jump right to making the next needed call or repeat call.

Added in case you wanted to have a menu option at logon or somewhere that took
a user right into Adding their pager info and then exiting and proceeding on
their MENU*.CTL way is :

         Entry:
         KEY=^@ TYPE=200 Opt Data=D:\PAGER\PAGER /q && EDIT

You can set up the above EDIT option for say new callers into an area of the
system or for all callers when they call your system. They will see the
