      1. When the file is copied as a whole, it remains unchanged.

      2. When portions of this file are extracted for the benefit of others
(PhishNet postings, private mailings, etc.) the source issue

may be obtained at no charge.

To receive the latest issue of the PhishNet Venue File, use one of the
following methods:

   ftp: archive.phish.net, directory /pub/phish/text_files
   gopher: archive.phish.net (look under text_files)
e-mail: Send your request to phish-archives@phish.net "Phish Archives"

   More Information:

There are three ways to get this file. The first, easiest, and perhaps
slowest way is to send electronic mail to:

      phish-archives@phish.net

Ask for a copy of the "Venue File". Lee Silverman, the PhishNet
archivist, responds to e-mail sent here every day or so. You should
receive your copy via e-mail within a day or two. Notice that if you
ask for the "Venue File Supplement", you will not receive the full
version of the Venue File -- you will receive the supplemental version
   instead.

The second way, if you just want to look at the file without getting
your own copy, is to use your favorite gopher program (Turbogopher or
NCSA Mosaic on the Mac; gopher, xgopher or xmosaic on IBMs and/or
   Unix machines) to gopher to:

      archive.phish.net

You'll see the top level directory for gopher at that point. Simply
open the text_files directory and open the file named "venue".

The third way (again, if you want your own copy) is to ftp to
   archive.phish.net, changing the directory to:

      /pub/phish/text_files

From there, just get a copy of the file "venue". If you need more
information on how to use ftp or gopher, please read Question 6 in the
PhishNet FAQ File. The FAQ File is available by e-mail, ftp or gopher,
   just like the Venue File.

About the PhishNet Venue File Supplement

A different, shorter version of the PhishNet Venue File is also
available. Called The PhishNet Venue File Supplement
("venue_supplement"), it contains venue information only for the current
tour. The Venue File Supplement and the complete Venue File always
contain consistent information -- both are updated simultaneously.

Welcome to the PhishNet Venue File! VENINTRO

HAPPY NEW YEAR! (So what if its March?)

Here it is, your one-stop source for all the venue information you can
possibly stand...and then some.

*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*
*                                                                         *
* *** IMPORTANT *** - BEFORE you go looking for your favorite venue, or *
* for any other information in this file, you may want to consult the *
* section on Venue File Notation first. If this is your first time using *
* the Venue File, please advance forward past this section to the next *
* one (oddly enough, titled 'About Venue File Notation'). *
*                                                                         *
*-------------------------------------------------------------------------*

In this issue, you will only find venues from the Summer '93 tour, the
Holiday '93 (New Years Eve) mini-tour, and the Spring '94 tour (through
Laguna Seca). As new issues are compiled, I expect to add new venues (as
they are announced).

Note that the Spring '94 venue information is _incomplete_! I decided that
it would be best to make available all information that I have received and
checked out so far. No point in waiting until I have everything, right?
Rest assured I will be working hard to make the Spring '94 venue details
as thorough as possible. All the same, if you can provide any missing
pieces, PLEASE send them immediately to <jdandrea@delphi.com>. Thanks in
advance for your help!

The information contained in this file has been compiled from postings
to rec.music.phish, the submissions of lots of Netters, and phone calls to
each venue, the AAA, the CAA, you name it.

"Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information
contained herein." I just love classic legalese. Even so, understand that
the material is subject to change and I have no control over the ever-
changing U.S. Highway System (though most interstates should be rather
stable). If there's something you feel is missing from this file, or if
you want to suggest something be done differently, or anything else, it is
important to write me as soon as you can (See FEEDB for more information).

The bottom line: Don't use this file 100% in place of a road atlas (even
though, in many cases, it will give you useful information that, I'm
willing to bet, you will _not_ get from a road atlas, especially as you
approach your target venue). _Do_ use this file as a supplement to your
road atlas when driving to venues across long distances.

Thanks for reading...and remember: On bad ice, the brake pedal is _not_
your friend!

About Venue File Notation VENNOTAT

Each entry in this file is assigned an index code. An index code consists
of the letters VEN, followed by a unique five-character sequence. The full
index code always appears in the right-hand column with its associated
entry. In the Table of Contents, the Index, and other locations, you will
find the word 'See' followed by a five-character sequence.

Using the search feature of your text editor or browser, these index codes
will help you quickly locate any entry in this file. This will become
increasingly useful as the Venue File grows in size and depth.

For example, if you are looking for information about The Centrum in
Worcester (and you probably were in December of '93) use the index to find
this entry:

   The Centrum See 93039

You now know to use the letters VEN followed by 93039 as your search text.
The Venue File index can be found by searching for VEN followed by INDEX.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes in this Issue VENCHANG

o All Spring '94 venues that have been announced (through Laguna Seca)
are in place, but many entries are still missing information. If you
can help, please send your contributions to <jdandrea@delphi.com>.
Netters from everywhere thank you, I'm sure!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submissions, Comments and Feedback VENFEEDB

New additions to the file are _always_ welcome. If you have questions,
corrections, suggestions or comments (positive or negative) on what you see
here, please don't hesitate to tell me about it. Always keep in mind that
this file is for _your_ benefit. Even if you think someone else will write
me with a similar thought, I _still_ want to hear from you!

We are still in need of information regarding PhishNet gathering sites
for many of these venues. In addition, contacts that I spoke with at some
venues were unable to provide specific information (such as what is and
isn't allowed on the premises, that sort of thing). If you have any
seating charts for these venues - send 'em in! Any information you can
offer is always appreciated.

If you live near one of these venues, I especially want to hear from you
with regards to lodging. I have started out by choosing three hotel/motel
sites that are within reasonable distance from the venue. These lodgings
have all been awarded either two or three stars by the AAA, and rooms are
priced reasonably low. All of the lodgings mentioned in this issue range
anywhere from $25.00 up to $60.00, with the median price at about $35.00.
(Prices are as of _October_ '93 according to the AAA and, as you'd expect,
increase slightly as you add more people to your lodging roster). If you
can suggest better alternatives, and I suspect there are people out there
who can, please tell me about it so that I can include the information in
a future issue.

Alumni Arena, SUNY Buffalo VEN94005
Amherst, NY +1 (716) 645-2957

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:

Hats off to Craig Steinberger <stein-c@eng.buffalo.edu> for directions!

From the east or west (I-90):

o Take I-90 (New York State Thruway) towards Buffalo, New York. Toll
on the Thruway is, at most, $2.10 depending on where you enter I-90.
   o From I-90, take exit 50 (I-290).
   o Take I-290, effectively heading northwest, to exit 4 (I-990). As a
point of reference, if you reach the Niagara Falls Boulevard exit,
     you went too far.
o Take I-990 to exit 1 (Audobon Parkway -- this is the State University
     exit).
o Once on Audobon Parkway, pass one intersection and turn left at the
next light (Flint Road -- note the large University sign on the left).
o Take Flint Road to Augspurger Road (turn right at the first stop
     sign).
o As you head down Augspurger, there will be parking lots to your left,
all with signs. As you approach the arena, there are Jacobs A Lot,
Jacobs B Lot, Jacobs C Lot, Baird A Lot and Slee A Lot. A suggestion:
Proceed to the Baird A Lot, then park where everyone else is parking.

From the parking lots (Jacobs A, et. al.):

o The $1,000,000 question: Where is the arena? As you were driving in
on Augspurger Road, you probably saw a big (big for us, anyway)
football stadium. No, that isn't the arena, but it works rather well
as a landmark! Face the stadium and turn a little to the left.
There should be a large building that has a set of flagpoles in front
     of it. That's Alumni Arena.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Information:

There should be plenty of parking, and there will probably be campus
police directing traffic. You might have to park in a lot other than
the ones described above (*), but finding the arena shouldn't be a
   problem.

   * -- Alternatively, use the Coventry Entrance for the 4/10 performance.

Note that there is no parking on campus after midnight.

Gathering Sites:

   From Craig Steinberger <stein-c@eng.buffalo.edu>:

"Some locals are currently debating the best place for a gathering.
Once we come to some agreement, we'll post something to the PhishNet."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:

Some altogether too kind soul at <swatso@asc.upenn.edu> contributed
these directions (as well as the supplementary info.).

   From the north (I-95):

o Take I-95 south to Route 9 south. At this point, Route 9 is also
known as the West Side Highway or the Henry Hudson Parkway. You'll
be free-sailing down the streets of Manhattan along the Hudson River.
o Make an exit at 79th Street. You'll be facing east on 79th when you
do this. Proceed straight ahead for two blocks, where you'll find
Broadway. Turn right on Broadway to find 75th Street. The Beacon
Theatre is on the east side of Broadway. It has a large marquee.

From the south (I-95 / New Jersey Turnpike):

o Take I-95 north. Eventually, you can get onto the New Jersey
Turnpike. Tolls on this road can go as high as $4.00 or so, depending
on how much of it you're traversing. Continue to exit 16E (Lincoln
     Tunnel - I-495 - toll is $4.00).
o Once you emerge in Manhattan, take that left turn onto 40th Street
and the West Side. Proceed north on the "West Side" along 9th or
10 Avenue until you reach 75th Street. The Beacon Theatre is on the
east side of Broadway. You have arrived!

   From within Manhattan:

   o Easy one. Take the red line (1, 2, 3 or 9) to 72nd Street. You'll
wind up on Broadway. Head on over to building #2124. That's it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Information:

The Beacon Theatre is situated on the Upper West Side of NYC at 74th-
   75th Streets and Broadway.

"There are garages around the 70's but they'll cost ya. Keep looking
for spots but stay _legal_. NYC parking tix are LARGE. Your best bet
is to find legal parking on the streets in the 70's and 80's and then
walk to the show. The area is really pretty safe if you have basic
   city-smarts."

A thank you to Mary Grace G. Wilkinson <wilkinmg@eckerd.edu> for these:

o From Yeehaw Junction take Route 60 west to I-275 south. Continue with
     'From the north (I-275)'.

   From the north (I-275):

   o Take I-275 south to exit 16 (Route 686).
o Take Route 686 west to Route 611. When you approach Route 611, move
to the far right lane and turn right onto it. If you miss this turn,
you'll end up on the overpass and will miss the Village! If you make
this turn, well, you're in luck -- the Boatyard Village will appear on
     your right.

Incidentally, there is an entrance sign that is wooden (and rather
rickety) that declares "The Boatyard Village." Just take Fairchild
Drive and you'll be there in no time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Information:

Mary has also provided a plethora of supplementary information worth
   reading, especially for you first-timers:

"The Boatyard Village is an incredible place. It looks like a secluded
village of old rickety wooden buildings out of some ghost town. There
are a few shops including a crystal store, a bookstore, a bait and
tackle shop, and they used to have an ice cream shop but the lady didn't
mention it when I talked to her. There are three restaurants. One is
only opened for lunch, another just opened and the woman I spoke with
did not speak very highly of it, and there is also a fast food place."

"In order to get to the Boatyard Village you take this winding road
for about 1/2 a mile that seems like you are leading to nowhere. When
you finally get there, get out and you will notice that the Village is
actually on the water, hence the name Boatyard....duh! The pavilion
itself probably holds close to 2000...all general admision.

"As far as house rules are concerned these guys were EXTREMELY happy
and jolly last I was there. However, this gig is being sponsored by
the guys at the Ritz in Tampa, so...I am assuming that the guys from
the Ritz will be running things that night meaning that their house
rules are what is really the concern here. The Ritz is strict. DON'T
drink if you are under 21 and don't even think about lighting up in the
   place..."

"Outside is a completely different story, however and the surroundings
are great! If I remember correctly, the pavilion itself is on stilts
on the water and has a dock around its outside... There are lots of
little nooks and crannies all over that make this place really neat."

"If you are driving down for this you might as well drive ten minutes
further and see the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Pete. It's incredible!
Wow!!! Here are directions on how to get there. You are on I-275
heading south past Exit 16 (where you get off for the Boatyard). Take
Exit 9 to Downtown St. Petersburg. Go straight until 3rd Street and
head right. The museum is about five blocks up on the left. Admission
is $5 ($3.50 with student I.D. and if you can grab a Creative Loafing
Magazine from somewhere they have coupons for the place to make it even
   cheaper.) It's open from 9:30am to 5:50pm."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nearby Lodging:

   ...take it away, Mary!

"This news is not the greatest. As soon as you get off Exit 16 and head
west on 686 you should see a few hotels. I called the two that would be
   the cheapest:

      Comfort Inn La Quinta Inn
$75/night for two $69/night for two
      +1 (813) 573-1171 +1 (813) 572-7222

That's still pretty high, and they are still a few miles from the
Boatyard Village. I think there's a Super 8 somewhere close by..."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gathering Sites:

"The Boatyard itself is a pretty obvious one. It is the type of place
that you could hang out at all day if you so desired."

When I saw Matt Spool's <tehula@bach.udel.edu> offer for directions, I
couldn't pass it up, so I gave him a call. Here's the scoop:

   From the west (I-80):

o Take I-80 to the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike,
     headed south.
o Continue on the Northeast Extension, exiting onto Route 476 south.
o Take Route 476 south to I-95 south. Continue with 'From the north,
     south and east'.

   From the west (Pennsylvania Turnpike):

o Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike east to I-95 south. Continue with
'From the north, south and east'.

From the north, south and east (I-95):

o Take I-95 to exit 1B (University of Delaware). From there, take
     Route 896 north.
o While on Route 896, you'll reach a traffic light. On the far right
corner you'll see an electronic sign. Just follow the signs to the
     parking lot and you're there!

Gathering Sites:

It has been suggested that gatherings be held in the nearby town of
Syracuse, primarily because Weedsport is, apparently, in the middle of
nowhere! Syracuse is about ten miles outside of Weedsport.

   Other possible sites include:

Clark's Ale House - Choose from 26 different imports and domestics,
all on tap. However, while beer and ale are their
strong points, don't expect the best food...

Kosta's Fast Break - Yes, they have the old standby "pizza and beer."

They also have some unusual food fare such as the
"statewide famous" Twelve Greek Gods Sandwiches.

One example: The Demetra, which includes three
                        cheeses and fourteen different vegetables,
_including_ two kinds of peppers, mushrooms, etc.
You can get that cold, baked, grilled or fried.

Other Information:

Parking tends to be sparse and it is not in the best part of town. If
you have anything valuable, lock it in your car trunk.

Robert McMullen <robert@askinc.ask.COM> had this to say about the Fox
   Theatre:

"All I know about its history is that the Allman Brothers used to
play there a lot back in the days. And, of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd
immortalized the place with their 'One More From the Road' double-
live album. Skynyrd also played there last year for the 25th
      anniversary pay-per-view.

I guess its like the 'Fillmore of Atlanta'..."

Nancy S. Sterman <msterma@emoryu1.cc.emory.edu> says this about the
   upcoming 4/23/94 performance:

"If any of y'all are planning to see it there find a bus, a car a
camel -- you must go!!! The ceiling of the theater is painted blue
and during performances, they have an entire solar system with real
blinking stars -- and the area around the seats is made to look like
an ancient middle eastern amphitheater. Every nook and cranny of
      that place is so beautiful."

Ellis Godard <jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.edu> adds to the praise for
   this place:

"First off, the place is gorgeous. If you went to the Knoxville
show, imagine a bigger room, with a turreted bridge stretching across
the ceiling above the stage, arabian towers about the perimeter, and
a ceiling that beats the sky at Red Rocks: stars glow and glitter
across the entire bluey-gray surface, and clouds are projected onto
the ceiling, creeping across during the entire show.

I've seen 50 or so shows there, from the Nutcracker to Edie Brickell.
Its gorgeous. DON'T MISS IT!!!! Divided Sky is a must..."

   Charles Emory <chaz@computone.com> says:

"The Fabulous Fox Theatre is an all around awesome place to see a
live band. It is acoustically great, visually great and very
      comfortable.

The entrance hall from the street has beautiful mosaic tile. Inside
there are beautiful oriental style carpets and brass everywhere,
marble bathrooms with plush seating areas outside the bathrooms. The
music hall has a painted ceiling depicting the sky with, if my memory
serves me, clouds that move across it. The sky turns tonight with
stars at show time. The setting is quite intimate. It only holds a
      few thousand pholks."

...oh, and did I mention that my mom, who lives in Lawrenceville, GA
says its beautiful, too? Yes, I did. So there. Now if this doesn't
convince you to see this show, nothing will! [ed.]

o Eventually you will approach a shopping mall. Bear left until you
reach the first light (an Exxon station is on the right). Turn left
here - you are now on King's Drive. The Grady Cole Center will soon
     be on your right.

o Take I-495 to exit 12 (Route 140). Continue with 'From Route 140'.

   From Route 140:

o You would think that Great Woods is easy to get to at this point
since it is on Route 140, but not according to the folks at the
Great Woods number above. I have to say that they were the only
venue unwilling to give me clear directions over the phone, much
less information about Great Woods. They insist that you call
+1 (508) 339-2333 for directions. Its all automated - select
Option 5. Directions are given from Cape Cod, Worcester, Providence
     and Boston.

By the time I tried this number, the line had been closed down (HA!).
It opens up again in the spring, so when it does, I'll update this
entry with whatever top-secret information I learn! Of course, if
_you_ know anything about this venue...

Other Information:

You can purchase Reserved (Covered) or General Admission (Lawn
    Seating) tickets.

Here's a list of things you might want to consider to maximize your
    enjoyment while at Great Woods:

o Bug Spray Did you know that Great Woods is located in the
middle of Great Swamp? You do now.

o Garbage Bag If it rains and you're on the lawn, you'll be glad
                      you brought one.

o Plastic Cups You must have these handy should you intend on
drinking on the premises (See Gathering Sites, under
                      this entry, for more information).

o Beverages/Food It can take up to 2 hours to get out of the parking
lot so, while you're waiting, eat, drink, and be
                      merry.

o Sweatshirt It can get rather cool here at night.

o Extra Money If you plan on taking advantage of their concessions,
you should know that their prices are rather steep
(Example: $3.50 or more for a _small paper cup_ of
                      beer).

Gathering Sites:

The parking lot is just fine for gathering. Some Netters have held
parking lot barbecues without any problems. Bring some plastic cups to
drink from (if the staff sees cans, they'll take 'em).

Want to meet LOTS of people at Great Woods? Try tying a large helium
balloon to your vehicle's antenna (no kidding).

And - hey - if that's no good, there's always McDonalds on Route 140,
about a half-mile from Great Woods!

Bison Brewing Company, 2598 Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley

This is at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Parker Street, and its
five blocks south of the UC Berkeley campus. Bison is a microbrewery
that doesn't card at the door, and they offer moderately priced food and
non-alcoholic drinks as well. One suggestion has been to meet on the
   upstairs deck.

Bison is about a ten minute walk from The Greek. (Hint: If you are
driving in Berkeley, it will take much longer to get there.) Street
parking is free on the weekends.

Telegraph. Turn left onto Telegraph. Parker Street is 6 blocks ahead.

From Berkeley BART: Walk down Shattuck Avenue (south) to Bancroft Way.
Make a right, go up the hill 5 blocks to Telegraph Avenue. Turn left
onto Telegraph, and proceed six blocks to Parker Street.

From Ashby BART: Walk east up Asbhy Avenue to Telegraph. Turn left
onto Telegraph, and proceed six blocks to Parker Street.

From Highway 24: Go through the Caldecott tunnel. Turn right at the
junction of Highway 13 and Ashby Avenue. Proceed down the hill and
through the large intersection at Claremont. Turn right onto Telegraph
and proceed six blocks to Parker Street.

Other Information:

The security inside the venue is fine, but outside in the parking lot
is a different story altogether, where the State Park Police are on
patrol. One suggestion would be to park at Field #5 - right next to
   the venue, within walking distance.

If you like to drink and/or smoke, try the beach area - it should be no
problem. (Not like we're condoning this or anything...its just a
   helpful tip.)

   Parking is free after 4:00pm.

Not much of anything is allowed inside the concert area, according
to park personnel! ("And it cost me _how_ much in tolls to get here?!")

o Stay to the right-hand side of the road, keeping on Jefferson Street
(avoid Brook Street at this point - these are mostly one way streets
and Brook goes in the wrong direction here!).
o Take Jefferson Street to 3rd Street. Turn left onto 3rd Street.
(Actually, you don't have much _legal_ choice).
o Take 3rd Street to Broadway where you will find the Theater.

   From the south (I-65):

o Take I-65 north towards Louisville. Take exit 136A (Brook Street).
The exit eventually empties onto Brook Street. Take Brook Street

you reach 3rd Street where you will find the Theater.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:

Eric <gk191770@undergrad.carleton.ca> contributed some directions from
memory. I developed what he sent into the following:

   From the south (I-89):

o Take I-89 north into Quebec. Once you reach the Canadian border, pass
through Customs. For information about Canadian Customs and more, See
     CANAD.
o Once in Quebec, note that I-89 transforms into a local, three-lane,
_perilous_ highway (Route 133). Take Route 133 north to Autoroute 10,
heading west to Montreal. Continue with 'From the east (Autoroute
     10, PQ)'.

   From the south (I-87):

o Take I-87 north into Quebec. Once you reach the Canadian border, pass
through Customs. For information about Canadian Customs and more, See
     CANAD.
o Exit onto Autoroute 10, heading west to Montreal. Continue with
'From the east (Autoroute 10, PQ)'.

From the east (Autoroute 10, PQ):

o Take Autoroute 10 west to Autoroute 15, headed northwest. Exit onto
Saint Catherine Street (one-way). Follow it to Saint Laurent Street.
The Metropolis is on the corner of Saint Laurent and Saint Catherine
     Streets.

From the west (Route 401, ON):

o Take Route 401 east. Route 401 becomes Autoroute 20.
o Take Autoroute 20 to Autoroute 15, headed northwest. Exit onto
Saint Catherine Street (one-way). Follow it to Saint Laurent Street.
The Metropolis is on the corner of Saint Laurent and Saint Catherine
     Streets.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Information:

I've been told this can be a confusing city to navigate through. You
should _definitely_ use a map for this one if you aren't familar with
   the area!

   Bill Kidder <gk191770@undergrad.carleton.ca> says:

"Incidentally, Montreal's main drag, Ste. Catherine, is considered
an east-west street. The main street through downtown Vancouver, BC,
Granville St., runs north-south. The two streets are in fact parallel.
   Montreal's one confusing city."

Regarding the directions, according to the map of PQ that I have
(courtesy of the fun-loving folks at Rand McNally), in order to get to
Ste. Catherine, one must use Autoroute 15. However, I have been told
that, when coming from the west (Autoroute 20), it is not necessary to
take Autoroute 15. If you know the trick, please send it to me! [ed.]

Gathering Sites:

Colin Telmer <telmerco@qed.uucp> has announced a gathering for the 4/5
performance. The main gathering will be at a bar called the Mad Hatter,
which is within eight blocks of the Metropolis. It will begin around
6 or 6:30pm. There will also be a gathering for 'eaters' at a greek
restuarant, believed to be on Prince Arthur Street (uncertain at 'press'
   time!).

From Colin: "The idea of the Mad Hatter originally came from Marcos.
Thank him when you see him." Don't forget!

Bill Kidder <gk191770@undergrad.carleton.ca>, Official Ottawa Ontario
PhishHead, heartily suggests that the best place to eat before or after
the show is Schwartz's Smoked Meat. You'll find it on Saint Laurent
about a mile north (uphill) from the Metropolis. Bill: "I consider
   Schwartz's Montreal's defining culinary experience."

   Alternate route:

Many of you (myself included) probably found yourselves sitting in
endless traffic on the exit 1 off-ramp. Consider the following:

o Instead of taking exit 1 (where noted), take exit 2. At the end of
the off-ramp, make two right turns, effectively sending you, your

o Getting out of Montreal is a bitch so look at a map! Whatever you do,
get on the 401 heading west to Toronto, taking the Yonge Street exit.
o Follow Yonge Street south for a long time. Look for the Concert Hall
on your right (Phish has played here twice -- See 93040). At this
intersection (Davenport and Yonge) there should be a Canadian Tire
store on your left, and The Concert Hall on your right. Take a left.
o After making a left, get into the left hand lane. Follow the street
as it curves to the right. You will now be heading south on Church
     Street.
o At the first light (Bloor Street East) take a left. You are now on
Bloor heading east which will turn into Danforth Avenue and take you
right to the Palladium. Continue with 'From Bloor Street East'.

   From Bloor Street East:

o Bloor Street East crosses a bridge. Keep following Bloor over the
bridge. Bloor Street turns into Danforth Avenue on the other side of
     the bridge.
o Eventually you should come to Danforth and Broadview Avenue. There is
a "Pizza Pizza" on the corner. The Palladium is about 5 blocks from
Broadview on Danforth Avenue. Follow the numbers. It will be on the
south side of the street or your right if you are traveling east on
     Danforth Avenue.

Let PhishNet's very own Sam Rosenbaum <rosenbau@epas.utoronto.ca> take
you on a mini-tour, without you even leaving your seat (amazing!).
I have paraphrased the following for formatting purposes, but its just
   as complete:

"I don't know much about The Palladium having never been there but I've
lived in the neighborhood for several years. Its in the middle of
`Greektown,' so there are dozens of bars and Greek restaurants in the
immediate vicinity. There are a bunch of particularly cool places
around Chester Avenue, the TTC stop before Pape and about a 10 minute
walk west of The Palladium. Especially recommended:

o Astoria -- corner of Chester and Danforth, best souvlaki in town (and
                that's saying a lot, as you'll see).

o Kapylio -- across from Astoria, killer Greek munchies, cheap beer.

o Ouzeri -- killer Greek food, decor, open late. This might be the best
               place for a Net gathering.

o The Big Carrot -- also at Chester, a killer health food store.
Expensive but extensive -- where _all_ the yuppies
come for organic beets and wheat grass juice.
Its in `Carrot Common,' a small mall that also has
good coffee at Fresh Pot, rocks and crystals at
Gifts from the Earth, and pricey but good Italian
                       takeout at Sanelli's."

The amazing Jon Lax <CASSIDY2@ac.dal.ca> has suggested these locales
   as well:

The Horseshoe Lee's Palace The Morrisey
368 Queen Street West 529 Bloor Street West 817 Yonge Street
     +1 (416) 598-4753 +1 (416) 532-7368 +1 (416) 923-6191

"Also along Queen Street West there are a lot of bars. Try The
   Horseshoe or The Black Bull."

Fact: Penn State _is_ in State College, PA. That's near the center of
PA, _not_ the center of Philadelphia (Are you thinking of the
          University of Pennsylvania? Thought so!).

There should be signs for the concert as you approach Park Avenue. They
may take you in on Park and then around to parking on campus, or they
may take you in on Pollock and then up past Rec Hall to the parking.
Either way, park on campus and then walk to the show or to the downtown
   area (College Avenue).

You should be aware that you'll be driving smack into the middle of
construction hell when you reach State College, PA. Be prepared to
park and walk quite a distance, depending on when you arrive.

I have been told that the local police are an interesting bunch.
   Well...you have been warned!

This is a glorified basketball court. Floor seating is folding chairs,
outside seating is bleachers. There is a circular concourse running all
the way around the outside edge of seating. This is where most people
will enter. The floor seating is entered through two tunnels running
from the outside under the bleachers.

Other Information:

This venue has a capacity of 9,400.

It has been suggested that the first entrance to Red Rocks is your
best bet, despite the backup that usually occurs there. This is due
to the fact that the Will Call Box is further down at the second
entrance (put another way, if there's traffic at the first entrance,
there will be even more at the second).

Have all tickets ready to show the attendant on your way _into_ the
parking lot. If you do not have the appropriate amount of tickets,
   expect to be stopped!

Food and drink are permitted, as are coolers. Alcoholic beverages
are not permitted. The rule seems to be that if you bring in drink
containers, they cannot be more than a half gallon (go figure), and
they must be of the non-disposable variety (no two-liter bottles).

   Camping:

Camping is abundant in the Salt Lake City area should you be up for
some hiking through the canyons (Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood,
Emigration, Mill Creek). For you car campers out there, consider Mill
Creek Canyon - you'll find plenty of small camping and picnic areas
here. Be aware that it costs $2 to get out of the canyon (unless you
leave after 10:00pm, then it is free). Mill Creek is on the other
side of town from Saltair Beach.

   Directions to Mill Creek:

From I-15, continue to I-80 in the center of the city. Take I-80 east
to I-215. Take I-215 south to the Route 33 South exit, as described
   below.

From I-215, exit at Route 33 South (the first exit on the east side of
Salt Lake City). After the exit, turn left at the light, then turn
right at the second light. Follow the brown Mill Creek signs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:

Thanks to Jack <gmichaud@christa.unh.edu> for these:

From the north or south (I-95):

o Take the exit for Route 16, heading north.
o From Route 16, take the Durham/UNH exit (Exit 6W?). Put another way,
the exit you want is the one _before_ the first toll both on Route
16, so if you reach a toll booth, you went too far!
o Once you have taken the Durham/UNH exit, you will be on Route 4 north.
Continue on Route 4 north for a few miles. Now, pay attention. You
will eventually see a sign on the right that describes a particular
exit for UNH. If you do not know the traditional short cut route
to UNH, then _take the exit noted on this sign_ -- it's easier!
o You will see an exit for Durham shortly after the aforementioned sign.
_This_ is the short cut. If you know it, take the exit. You're on
your own now! <Insert evil laughter here.>

For those of you who didn't take the short-cut:

o You will pass through a set of lights on your way to the UNH exit.
o Take the exit and turn left at the end of the off-ramp. UNH is
straight ahead, about a mile down the road. The first UNH building
you will come across is the field house, on your right at the top of
a little hill. Phish performed there in '93.
o After passing the field house, make the first left turn at the
     flashing light. Behold: Snively Arena!

Other Information:

This venue has a capacity of 7,000.

An ID showing an age of 21 or over is required to purchase alcoholic
   beverages.

Tickets are general admission, and there are bleachers around the sides.
There is no admission age, but you must be at least 21 to purchase
   alcohoic beverages. Benjamin Vanderver <bvanderv@liberty.uc.wlu.edu>
strongly suggests that, if you must, handle the beverage part _before_
you arrive, as "they will be anal." You heard it here first!

It is interesting to note that past appearances by Phish (or any other
band, for that matter) are nonexistent. This is a horse center! Having
seen the picture of the horse being hoisted in the "hoist" (*) promo in
RS #678, I can't help but wonder if there's a connection? ...yes, pure
   speculation, but still...

The closest Phish has ever played to Lexington was last March at Trax in
Charlottesville, which is about an hour away.

   * -- hoist with a lower-case 'h', at least in the promo.

Nearby Lodging:

FYI: Eric Haight <at801@yfn.ysu.edu> spoke with someone at the Horse
Center, and was told that camping _will_ be available on a first-come,
first-served basis starting the day before the 4/20/94 performance.
My suggestion? Call ahead for more information, and you'll be all set.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gathering Sites:

A good place to gather is a place called Salerno's. To get there, turn
_left_ on Route 11 instead of right (see the directions to the Center).
Follow this road for a mile or two, crossing the Maury river. Salerno's
is immediately on the right after the bridge. They have good pizza, and
there are no age constraints. It is also conveniently located near the
   Center.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions:

From the north (I-87 - New York State Thruway):

o Take I-87 south to exit 14A (Garden State Parkway). The Thruway
toll will vary depending on where you enter I-87 but, as a reference
point, it will cost about $1.30 to get from Newburgh, NY all the
way down to the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey.
o Take the Garden State Parkway to exit 159 (I-80). Total Parkway

tokens). Continue with 'From the east or west'.

   From the south (I-95):

o Take I-95 north until it becomes the New Jersey Turnpike. Tolls on
this road can go as high as $4.00 or so, depending on how much of it
you're traversing. Continue to exit 16W (Route 80). It will take
a bit for you to reach Route 80 once you take exit 16W, but when you
do, head west on Route 80. Continue with 'From the east or west'.

From the east or west (I-80):

   o Take I-80 to Exit 25 (Route 206).
o Take Route 206 north. Waterloo Village is just a mile or two up the

heavy as performance time approaches. Its mostly two lane country

be prepared for a long wait getting out of the place. Parking is free,
   on the grass.

Bring blankets! Its one huge open-air enclosure here. Food and drink
are sold on the sides of the concert area.

So You're Going To Canada VENCANAD

And now, Jon Lax <CASSIDY2@ac.dal.ca> provides a _very_ generous helping
of friendly tips for anyone visiting Canada. This was an impressive
undertaking! Thanks to Jon for the thoroughness of all this.

   Take it away, Jon...

o Customs - Before entering Canadian Customs make sure your car is
clean. Throw out all the tour crap and clean out the
ashtrays. Make sure any rolling papers (even if it is just
for tobacco) are stowed out of sight. These are some of the
               things border officials look for.

Make sure you all have either passports or birth
certificates ready. If a customs official asks for them you
should have them ready so you're not fumbling for them.

When talking to Canada Customs only the driver should speak.
Nothing looks or sounds worse than when the official asks a
question and everyone answers with something different.

If you have long hair, pull it back or wear a baseball cap.

If you do get pulled over ask a lot of questions. "Why am I
being pulled over?" "May I call an attorney?" "What are
you doing?" Canada does not have a zero-tolerance border
crossing policy and as such you have more rights than when
crossing into the U.S.. Also, if you are a member of the
AAA or CAA you are granted certain privileges such as bail
money and legal counsel. Make sure you know your rights,
but do not be patronizing or rude when talking to border
officials. BE POLITE and everything will be cool.

Do not bring contraband into Canada!!!!! There is no need
to bring drugs into Canada. It is an unnecessary risk and
if you really need them you can find them in Canada.

Firearms, such as handguns, are controlled weapons in Canada
and you CAN NOT bring them into the country. Surrender all
firearms at the border. You can get them out on your way
home. God knows why anyone would have them but just a
               warning.

Use common sense and a border crossing will go smoothly.

o Driving - The speed limit in Canada is 100 km/h on the highway. If
you keep up with the flow of traffic, which tends to travel
at about 120 km/h you will not get a ticket. For those of
you who have drivers licenses from Michigan, New York,
Vermont and Maine you can get nailed by the Ontario
Provincial Police and the Quebec Provincial Police. The
state troopers in those states have an agreement with law
enforcement officers in Ontario and Quebec and vice versa.
The OPP can take points off your license if you are caught
for a moving violation in Ontario. If you decide not to pay
the fine and you are stopped in your home state, the state
troopers will know you have an outstanding violation in
Canada and will nail you then. So pay your speeding
               tickets.

Within the city the speed limit is 50 km/h unless otherwise
               posted.

In Quebec you may not make a right hand turn on a red light.
In Ontario you may make a right hand turn on a red light.

o Currency - The American dollar has been more powerful then the Cdn
dollar since the 1950's. As of March, 1994 the American
dollar is worth about $1.35 Cdn. Cdn money comes in these
                denominations:

                Coins: $0.10, $0.25, $0.50 and $1. (The $1 coin is called
a loonie because of the loon on the tail side.)

                Bills: $2, $5, $20, $50 and $100. The bills are all
different colours. (No, its not Monopoly money.)

When exchanging money make sure you use a bank. They give
you the best rates. Any bank will give you Cdn money for
American. You don't need to have an account at the bank to
exchange money. DO NOT USE CURRENCY EXCHANGE PLACES such
                as Money Mart.

o Montreal - Montreal is a bilingual city. While most people speak
English some will not speak it to you. If someone will not
speak English to you, do not try to butcher the French you
learned in high school. If you can not speak French and
the person refuses to speak English just go somewhere where
they do. This shouldn't happen but it may.

o Useful French Phrases - "combien" "how much"
                             "ou est" "where is"
                             "metro" "subway"
                             "collise" "s##t"

"Quel heure est-il?" "What time is it?"

                             "gauche" "left"
                             "droit" "right"

                             "un" "1" "six" "6"
                             "deux" "2" "sept" "7"
                             "trois" "3" "huite" "8"
                             "quattre" "4" "neuf" "9"
                             "cinq" "5" "dix" "10"

o Toronto - Toronto is Canada's largest city. It has about 3 million
people in the greater metropolitan Toronto area. Toronto is
the easiest city to get around in. The whole city is laid
out on a grid. It is bordered to the south by Lake Ontario.
If you can see the CN Tower (the world's largest free
standing structure) you can find the lake because the CN
Tower is located right on the harbourfront. Yonge Street
runs north/south and is the middle of Toronto. All major
streets running east/west that cross Yonge will say so in
their name. So if you are on Richmond Street East, it means
you are on Richmond Street, east of Yonge. As well, all
numbers start at 1 (one) at Yonge Street and get larger the
further you move from Yonge. So if you are on Richmond
Street East and the numbers are increasing, you are
traveling east away from Yonge Street. If the numbers are
decreasing you are traveling West and will eventually hit
Yonge. Pretty simple. Numbers also increase as you drive
north and decrease as you drive south.

o Drinking - The drinking age in Canada is considerably younger then in
the U.S.. In Quebec the drinking age is 18. I have never
been carded in Quebec. The joke is, if you can reach the
bar you can get served in Quebec.

In Ontario, the drinking age is 19. It is enforced so
carry proper identification. The only identification that
can not be turned down is a passport!!! While many bars
will accept a driver's license they may not. If you want
to be assured of getting into a bar bring your passport.

Remember, Canadian beer is 5-6% alc/vol, so be aware of
how much you are drinking. DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Do not sell liquor outside of venues. This is a purely
American practice and is frowned upon heavily by the
police. It results in heavy fines.

o Vending - Street vending in Canada is very popular. The police
shouldn't hassle you too much. The worst they may do is
ticket you ($54.75 Cdn) for vending without a permit.

Nitrous Oxide is illegal in Canada.
