WINSOCK CLIENT SOFTWARE -- August 1994

       -----------------------------------------------

This is a detailed listing of the best available winsock

client based shareware/freeware used in communicating

through a modem to the Internet. I have indicated if there

is a prime location where the latest version is usually

available. With the file names and associated data which I

have supplied all of these packages can also be readily

found on the Internet through search tools like Archie and

Gopher, often in multiple locations.

Using these packages with a modem requires:

       1. Windows 3.1 or better.

       2. A "slip" account with an Internet provider.

       3. A special communications package capable of

accessing the slip account through a modem, such as

Peter Tattam's shareware package Trumpet Winsock

version 1.0a (twsk10a.zip available by ftp from:

     ftp.utas.edu.au: /pc/trumpet/winsock)

Standard disclaimer applies - as with everything you use

these out at your own risk. Many of these packages are still

being developed by their authors. Being freeware or low

cost shareware the rewards for their creativity and long

hours of work are minimal at best. Appreciate their efforts.

NAME: CU-SeeMe

PRIME PURPOSE: One way/two way/multiple video(!)

                conferencing.

FILE NAME: cuseeme.zip

FILE SIZE: 90,601

LATEST VERSION: W.34a1 July 1994

AVAILABLE FROM: gated.cornell.edu: /pub/video

COST: free.

DOCUMENTATION: Good.

COMMENTS: Not a stable product, but under

                considerable development effort. Even if

you don't have the capability to send,

                there are several reflector sites

available where you can use this package to

sneak a peek. The low data transfer speeds

on modem connections are a big problem, but

this is nevertheless interesting. Try it!

as the program file which should be

downloaded at the same time, and in which

the suggestion is made that if

documentation is needed for this windows

version it should be obtained from one of

the corresponding DOS versions (such as

                irc101.zip, 65,737 bytes, Nov. 1993) which

COST: Freeware

DOCUMENTATION: Limited, no on-line help

COMMENTS: Sometimes nicknamed "file slurping

protocol" this is only usable on certain

servers. Once tooted as a potential

replacement for FTP, it just doesnt seem

                to be going anywhere.

NAME: Wftpd

PRIME PURPOSE: File retrieval server ("daemon" FTP)

FILE NAME: wftbd19c.zip

FILE SIZE: 131,178

LATEST VERSION: 1.9c May 1994

AVAILABLE FROM: ftp.wst.com: /pub/winsock/wftpd

COST: Shareware $US 15

DOCUMENTATION: Negligible with unregistered version.

COMMENTS: Enables you to turn your PC into an

Internet FTP server so that others can

log on and retrieve files from your

                machine. Registration is recommended! Note:

beginning with version 1.9b a security bug

found in all previous versions is fixed.

Doesn't really belong in this client

listing, but here it is anyway for the last

                time.

COST: Released to Public Domain.

DOCUMENTATION: Good

COMMENTS: Based on an earlier version of WSFTP with

some added features . Program contains both

16 and 32 bit execution versions,

                (winftp.exe and win32ftp.exe), your choice

if you have 32 bit capability, although Im

not sure if theres any real difference in

                performance between the two.

DOCUMENTATION: Good

COMMENTS: Works well with WSFTP to retrieve files.

Visually well laid out and functioning

mainscreen. Latest version now has the

COMMENTS: Major new version 2.00 (93,463 bytes) just

released, a very good upgrade with many new

features. Version 2.01 (94,883 bytes) was

AVAILABLE FROM: risc.ua.edu: /pub/network/pegasus

COST: Free!

DOCUMENTATION: Good

COMMENTS: Unlike Eudora, this current version of

Pegasus does not yet have the capability of

running in the background, checking on mail

at regular intervals, (more of an issue for

network users). Nonetheless, it does have

many other features and the price is

certainly just about right! This is

                another popular mail package. Recommended,

COST: Shareware $US 29.95

DOCUMENTATION: Good

COMMENTS: Automated installation. Has direct dial

mail access capabilities but creating and

modifying script files for this can be

very cumbersome unless you are fortunately

using one of the on line services for which

                script files are provided. SMTP/POP

capability has just been added with this

latest version, which does require more

disk space (installed) than most other mail

                packages. Nonetheless, a potential

                competitor for Eudora and Pegasus.

Junod (noted for his popular WSFTP package)

and had both client and server

                capabilities. Package has gone commercial

LATEST VERSION: 1.0b (final)

                (or mirrors)

COST: Freely distributed for testing purposes.

DOCUMENTATION: Good, although terminology frequently very

                confusing and very frustrating, especially

                with initial setup.

COMMENTS: Apparently produced somewhere in the former

Soviet Union. Either this program suffers

somewhat in translation or the programmers

have a wicked sense of humor (or both). My

favorite example: "Error 502 - You have no

permission to talk. Goodbye." How can you

argue with that? They also have a nice

                replacement for the traditional hourglass

cursor, a man digging with a shovel. The

automated installation can be a nuisance

since a version of Trumpet winsock is

included and its files may have to be

deleted to avoid conflict if you already

have Trumpet loaded elsewhere. The news

reader has the usual features including

uudecoding, and ability to sort articles by

size, date, or subject and drag and drop

capability, etc. This is an interesting

package which requires some extra start up

                and familiarization effort.

COST: Shareware $US 40, only $20 for students.

DOCUMENTATION: Considerable documentation, but often

related packages for networks, for Windows

                NT, etc. liberally mixed in.

COMMENTS: Capability to operate as either a server

(for FTP) or a client. Required minimum of

                a 386 processor. A good newsreader IMHO

with a handy toolbar button/split screen

system. I have seen its telnet capability

mentioned very favorably by others, but the

FTP is inferior to other specialized

                shareware packages which are available.

DOCUMENTATION: Good

COMMENTS: ". .. ..solution to underpowered Windows

Telnet client programs. COMt allows you to

                use your favorite Windows communications

program (i.e., Procomm Plus for Windows,

Crosstalk for Windows, etc.) to communicate

over TCP/IP. COMt does this by installing

itself ahead of the standard Windows COMM

                driver (comm.drv), and intercepts accesses

to the COM ports of your choosing, routing

them to TCP/IP. Requests to access other

ports are passed on to the original COMM

driver, allowing you to continue to use

                those devices."

COMMENTS: Panda is a multipurpose customized program

COST: No charge.

DOCUMENTATION: Good, but no on-line help

COMMENTS: Automated setup. A very impressive windows

dialer with an easy to use scripting

capability. This should be an excellent

                replacement for the dialer/script portion

of Trumpet Winsock. Although this program

appears to be extremely large for a

dialer, much of the bulk is taken up by

                vbrun300.dll and associated Microsoft files

which can be deleted if you already have

                equivalent versions elsewhere in your

system in a path directory like DOS or

COMMENTS LView is a very popular graphics viewer

picture formats commonly found on the

Internet. For most casual users there is

not really a lot of difference between the

                two versions. The most significant

advantage of the Pro version is that if you

choose to register it you can receive a 32

bit version which can be run under either

Windows 3.1 (if you have win32s installed)

or Windows NT systems which should be

DOCUMENTATION: Very extensive.

COMMENTS: A very compact and very fast DOS program

capable of decoding picture files uuencoded

by a wide variety of other packages and

downloaded from newsgroups. It is capable

of dealing with some of the variations and

glitches sometimes found. This program can

be used on as little as an 8086/8088 and

down to DOS 2.0. As much as I hate DOS, the

and just type uu *.* and watch it finish

COST: Distributed free to licensed users of

Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroups 3.11

DOCUMENTATION: I didnt see anything in this version,

an installation note in the previous

                version win32s115.zip (April 1994).

COMMENTS: This Microsoft program adds some 32 bit

capability to a normal Windows 3.1 system

                without affecting backwards compatability.

In order to run sone of the 32 bit programs

which are beginning to appear (such as all

recent releases of Mosaic) you must either

upgrade your system with this or,

                buy/install the latest Windows For

Workgroups 3.11 which does the same thing

(and other things as well). If using

pkunzip with this file, remember to use the

                "-d" option. i.e.

                "pkunzip -d win32s115a.zip" which will

create two subdirectories, disk1 and disk2.

Shut all your other Windows apps down and

then run setup.exe in disk1. As a bonus,

there is a free 32 bit game "Freecell".

Being able to play the game confirms that

                this upgrade has been successfully

Curiously enough, older versions of this

COMMENTS VT52/VT100/VT200 emulation. Automated

of files in a directory, all of which

should be downloaded. Some of the files

such as vbrun300.dl_ may create duplicates

on your system and can be deleted after

installation if you already have an

existing equivalent version in a path

                directory. Slightly customized for intended

use at the University of Washington. Note:

does NOT work with Trumpet winsock 1.0a -

you will need a newer version of Trumpet to

                run this.

in development and can be expected to be

buggy, but the author will appreciate

ADDENDUM #1[][][][][][][] TRUMPET WINSOCK [][][][][][][][]

The current release of Trumpet Winsock is 1.0a and it is

available from:

ftp.utas.edu.au: /pc/trumpet/winsock

Unfortunately, apparently due to some bugs in this version,

the odd winsock client does not properly work with this

version. In this case there are some interim beta versions

of the next expected release currently available from:

petros.psychol.utas.edu.au: /pub/trumpet/winsock/pre-

release

twsk10b-beta1.zip 120,108 bytes Feb 1994

twsk10b-beta10.zip 83,908 July

If you dont REALLY need to risk using one of these then

ADDENDUM#3[][] POPULAR WINSOCK SOURCE LOCATIONS [][][][][][]

There are a number of Internet sites which carry a fair

amount of windows/winsock software including most of the

packages listed above (but not always the latest version).

These sites can be accessed and the software downloaded

through FTP. Just a few of these sites are:

GOPHER ACCESS: gopher.cica.indiana.edu port 70

WWW URL: http://www.cica.indiana.edu

COMMENT: A major source for Windows software in

general, and often difficult to log into

because of its popularity. Downloading the

various README files is the best place to

start to identify what's available and in

which directories if interested in other

                areas.
