                        QUICK START FOR PC'S

This guide is all you should need to install your modem and
software. For the moment, put away the Owners Manual and other
documentation, and follow the instructions here.

Before you begin, check that you received the following:

Your modem or faxmodem
A telephone cord
User's Manual
MTEZ DOS or DOS and Fax Software
A MTEZ manual
A packet of free and reduced-price offers

And if you have an external modem or faxmodem, you should also have:
A power cube (AC adapter)

Depending on your modem model, you may have received a cable to
connect your modem and computer. Not all modems come with a cable.
If yours does not, your dealer should have the right one for your
combination of modem and computer. It must be a serial mod em
cable; a printer cable will not work.

Installing an External Modem

    1. Connect the telephone cord. Plug one end of the gray phone
cord into a wall jack (where you could connect a phone. Plug the
other end into the modem's jack marked "WALL" (it's nearest the
middle). You may connect a phone to the modem's other jack. Your
modem works with or without a telephone.

    2. Plug the power cube into a wall socket (or other outlet).
Plug the other end into the jack on the back of the modem marked
"POWER". You can leave the power cube plugged in when you're not
using your modem.

    3. Turn off your computer, then plug in the modem-to-computer
serial cable. One end of the cable plugs into the jack on the back
of the modem marked "RS-232C" and the other end into your serial
port on the back of your computer. (Note: If you are not sure
whether you have connected your modem to COM 1 or COM 2, you can
change this easily with your modem software.) Turn your computer
back on.

Installing an Internal Modem

Important! Before you start, unplug your computer. Don't plug
it back in or turn it on until you finish the modem installation.
Your computer should be close to a telephone connections.

    1. Plug your internal modem card into a full-length slot inside
your computer. It takes its power from the slot. If you have not
installed an internal modem before, look at the detailed
instructions with pictures in the front of your User's Manual.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our internal modems leave the factory set to COM
4 and this works in most cases without change. If you're not sure
which COM ports are free, use the ZPORTS utility on your MTEZ
installation disk. Log onto the drive with that disk, type ZPORTS
and press the Enter key. It will show which port to use for your
modem. If you need to change the COM port setting, you should find
all the information you need right on the modem card. The label
shows pin settings for COM 1, 2, 3 or 4. More detail is in your
Users Manual.

    2. Replace the cover on your computer.

    3. Connect the Telephone Cord. Plug one end of the gray phone
cord into a wall jack (where you could connect a phone. Plug the
other end into the modem's jack nearest the middle). You may
connect a phone to the modem's other jack. Your modem works with or
without a telephone.

    3. Plug in and turn on your computer.

Installing MTEZ DOS Data and Fax Software

    1. If you have an external modem, turn it on. If you have an
internal modem, you can load your software immediately. (MTEZ
requires about 1Mb of hard disk space.)

    2. Place the MTEZ disk in your A: drive. At the A:> prompt,
type INSTALL and press the Enter key. Follow the instructions on
the screen to accept the default directory name. MTEZ loads all its
files onto your hard drive.

    3. If you have a faxmodem, MTEZ will also install its fax
module. When it loads its ExpressFax CAS Setup Utility, type in
your name for the top of fax pages. Then highlight the Com Port
space and press the space bar until it shows your COM port. Press
the F10 key to save and exit.

    4. Set up MTEZ for your modem and COM port selection. Change
to the \MTEZ directory, type MTEZ and press the Enter key. At the
MTEZ menu, press C (for Change) and S (for Setup).

At the Setup screen, use the arrow keys to move to Modem Type.
Press the F2 key to see modem choices and highlight your modem.
Press the Enter key, then F10.

When the Location Number/Dial Directory Options screen appears,
press F10 to accept the defaults. If you want to use these options
after you are familiar with MTEZ, read section 9 in the MTEZ manual.

To set the COM port, press C and then P (for Parameters) at the
MTEZ menu. Highlight the COM port box and press the space bar to
adjust it to your modem's port. Then press F10 to accept. For now,
leave all the other settings alone. You can always adjust them,
but you can use your modem now without other changes.

Making Data Calls with MTEZ

    1. In its directory, type MTEZ and press the Enter key to start
the program (if you have an external modem, turn it on first).

    2. From the MTEZ menu, press D (for directory) Highlight a
blank line and press E (for edit). Use the Tab key to move between
columns. Type in the Name and Number you want to call. BE SURE TO
INCLUDE THE 1 AND AREA CODE FOR LONG DISTANCE AND ANY OFFICE
DIAL-OUT PREFIX YOU NEED. You can probably leave the Type, Setting,
and Logon columns, as they are. The default Setting of MAX,N81 will
be the right one for most numbers you call. Press the Esc key when
you have finished.

If you have a faxmodem, you can enter fax numbers in this
directory too. First load FAXMAN as described below, then start
MTEZ. In the Type column, press the space bar until FAX appears.

    3. To call the number you just entered, highlight that line and
press the Enter key.

    4. If you call an electronic bulletin board system (BBS), you
can follow its on-screen instructions for reading and leaving
messages, or for downloading files.

NOTE: Just as two modems must have the same settings (like N81)
to connect, they must use the same protocol to transfer files. Make
sure you choose the same protocol (like Ymodem) for the BBS and in
MTEZ.

Sending a Fax in DOS

    1. Start the fax module in DOS from the \MTEZ directory by
typing FAXMAN and pressing the Enter key. Now, load ExpressFax by
typing FAX and pressing the Enter key. You can enter fax numbers
first as explained in step 2 above or type in a number when you are
ready to send a fax.

    2. For your first fax, send a short note. Highlight ExpressFax
a Note and press the Enter key. When it prompts you for a number to
call, type one in or press F4 to choose a number from your
directory. Be sure to call a FAX number. Otherwise, the call will
not connect. Type your note to fax and press the F10 key twice to
send it. Later, you can choose Send Fax Document(s) to send a file.
See your MTEZ manual if you need more detail.

Receiving a Fax in DOS

    1. Start FAXMAN, if you have not done so already. From the
\MTEZ directory, type FAXMAN and press the Enter key.

    2. Your faxmodem and computer are now set up to receive faxes.
The modem will answer and receive an incoming fax call on the second
ring, unless you change this in the FAXMAN configuration screen.
(You cannot receive a fax if you are using MTEZ in Data or Host
mode.)

    3. When you have received your faxes, unload FAXMAN to return
your telephone line to normal use. From the \MTEZ directory, type
FAXMAN/R and press the Enter key.

Viewing or Printing a Fax

    1. When you have loaded FAXMAN and started Express FAX, choose
Received Faxes then View or Print a Fax. This will display the last
received fax on the screen. Type V to view or print it.

NOTE: Faxes you receive or send arrive in graphics format. Even
the letters and numbers are in the form of images. You cannot
import them into your word processing program to edit as text unless
you have optical character recognition software. For most uses, you
do not need this feature though. See your MTEZ manual for details
on converting received faxes and text files.

Installing WINFAX Windows Fax Software

    1. If you have an external faxmodem, turn it on. Start Windows
3.0 or later, and put your WinFax disk in Drive A:. Choose Run...
from the File menu. Type in A:\INSTALL, then click on OK.

    2. Click on OK in the first install dialog box to start the
process. In the next dialog box, click on Yes to have WinFax check
your ports and faxmodem.

    3. When the Printer Driver Setup box appears, it will show
which port it detected. In the Fax Device, highlight your faxmodem.
(Look on your modem's package if you're not sure.) Don't select
WinFax LITE as default printer; you can do that anytime. Now click
on OK.

    4. In the next dialog box, click on OK to accept the default
directory (C:\WINFAX). WinFax will create its directories and
display progress. After it has installed its program, it will ask
you to accept C:\WINFAX\DATA as the fax file directory. Click on
OK.

    5. When the WinFax LITE Setup box appears, click on More...
Add any office phone system Dial Prefix: you need, like 9,. Type
your fax number in the Station Identifier block and your (or your
company's) name in Sender Name block. Leave the other settings
alone for now. Click on OK here and in the Setup box.

    6. When you see WinFax LITE Installation Completed, click on
OK. Your desktop will display a WinFax group and icons. Exit and
restart Windows before using WinFax for the first time.

Getting Technical Support

IMPORTANT NOTE!. You really purchased several products in your
faxmodem package. Zoom manufactures the faxmodem and supports the
MTEZ and WinFax LITE software bundled with it.

You may find it faster and more efficient to fax your question,
or to use a bulletin board or forum. It is difficult to control the
length of technical support calls, and you may not be able to get
through a voice line when you try. Remember to include full
details or a question or problem, AND A FAX NUMBER AND AN ADDRESS
FOR A REPLY.

For Zoom Modem Questions

You have 4 ways to gain access to Zoom's technical support:

CompuServe

Zoom maintains a forum on CompuServe that is monitored by our
technical support staff. We can normally answer questions within 48
hours. The forum also offers technical bulletins and helpful hints
for getting maximum performance from your modem. Zoom provides a
free CompuServe sign-on package with every modem. Once you
establish your account, you can access our forum. After you log on,
you'll see the prompt Enter choice number ! Type GO ZOOM and press
the Enter key. When you see Press <CR> !, press your Enter key.
Then Select choice 2 (Messages), then 1, (Select), then 8 (Zoom).

Zoom FaxLine (617) 423-9231

Zoom's support staff enters most faxed questions within 48
hours. Some more complex questions require testing or special
research. These can take longer. Please be as specific and give as
much information as possible. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR FAX NUMBER
AND AN ADDRESS FOR A REPLY.

Voice Calls (617) 423-1076

Zoom's technical support department is open Monday through
Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Eastern time. Please be patient.

Zoom Bulletin Board (617) 423-3733

This BBS operates much like the CompuServe forum. Monday
through Saturday, our technical staff reviews questions posted
here. You can contact it 24 hours a day. Set your modem to no
parity, 8 bits, and 1 stop bit.

Getting Maximum Performance

We strongly recommend that after you've hooked up your modem,
you perform the following procedure. It adjusts your modem to your
particular telephone line, by matching the modem and phone line
impedance. The modem stores the correct setting, so you need do
this only once. (Of course, if you modem your modem to another
location with new telephone lines, you should repeat the procedure.)
You will need the number of another high-speed (V.32/V.32bis) modem
to call. So have the number ready before you start.

    1. Load your data communications software (MTEZ). It will
start up in terminal (command) mode.

    2. Type ATNS37=9\E1 and press the Enter key. The modem should
respond OK.

    3. Next, type ATDP, followed immediately by the number of
another high speed modem. For example, if the modem you want to
call is at 423-3733, type ATDP4233733 and press the Enter key. If
the two modems try to connect, yours will automatically adjust its
elf, even if they do not establish a connection. You have to redial
only if you get a busy signal.

    4. Use your software's hang-up function to hang up. (Press H
from the MTEZ menu.)

    5. Back in terminal mode, type ATZ and press the Enter key.
Exit your software even if you want to use it right away! (Press X
from the MTEZ menu and type Y to confirm.)

Your Modem is Adjusted for Peak Performance!

Common Problems and Solutions

Problem: Your software says it can't find your modem.

Solution: Only one piece of hardware can use a COM port at one
time. If you have not set the communications or fax software for
the right COM port, they can't work. If you are not sure, run
ZPORTS (see Installing an Internal Modem above). Make sure no
other board has the same COM port setting as the faxmodem, and checking
that you have set your software to the right COM port.

Problem: All characters you type appear twice on your screen.

Solution: Change your communications software setting to Full
Duplex, not Half Duplex. MTEZ shows FDX at the top of its screen
for Full Duplex. Toggle this with by holding down the Alt key and
pressing the E key.

Problem: Your modem connects with another, but you see only
garbled characters on the screen.

Solution: The other modem may 1) have incompatible settings, or
2) may be slower or have fewer features than yours. In most cases,
modems use no parity, 8 data bits and one stop bit (N81 or 8N1).
For some, like the CompuServe system, you will need to change to
E71. For slower or less capable modems you may need to change your
the listing in your dialing directory to Type to None and Setting
from MAX to a slower rate.

Problem: You can't send or receive fax.

Solution: Fax software can conflict with other programs that try
to use the same computer memory at the same time. In particular,
Windows and some pop-up (TSR) software can cause a problem with
FAXMAN. Either unload your TSRs and restart FAXMAN, or do not load
the TSRs until you need them. If you are not sure if this is your
problem, start your computer from a floppy drive with a plain system
disk. Format and transfer the operating system to a disk, do not
add an AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file. Boot with that disk, start
FAXMAN and see whether it works without the other programs in
memory. If you cannot solve memory conflicts any other way, you can
boot from a floppy when you need to fax.

Problem: WinFax won't send WordPerfect 5.1 files.

Solution: With version 5.1 only, WordPerfect suggests you make
its driver WINFAX.WRS a read only file. Start File Manager in the
Main Windows group. In the \WPC directory, highlight WINFAX.WRS.
Pull down the File menu and choose Properties... In its dialog
box, click on Read Only so an X appears. Then click on OK.

Problem: WinFax won't send files from DOS programs.

Solution: You have several options for files that aren't
compatible with faxing. When you select WINFAX as your printer in
Windows, you can fax any file by printing it. DOS application files
require the extra step of importing them into a compatible Windows
program to print to WinFax or print to file in the .FXS format.

Problem: WinFax won't send files from Lotus 1-2-3.

Solution: If you click on and move the WinFax dialog box in
1-2-3, you won't be able to send the fax. When you select WINFAX as
your printer and choose Print..., you can fax directly from 1-2-3 as
long as you don't move the dialog box.

See your modem's Troubleshooter's section for other hints.
