Telerama has been offering affordable Internet connections since 1991.
This was way before WWW was a household name. Today, in my opinion, Telerama
offers the best array of Internet services at very reasonable prices. As is
the case with every ISP (Internet Service Provider), Telerama has its
problems, including busy signals, dropped connections and service outages.
But it is improving.

The following is taken from Telerama's online brochure of services(06/14/96).
-------------------------------------------------------------[begin quote]
Personal Accounts
-----------------
      Cost: $20 /30 days

Full Internet Access
--------------------

Enjoy all the advantages of the Internet: e-mail, telnet, ftp, gopher,
IRC, Usenet, ClariNet/UPI and other Internet services. Choose menus to
guide you or opt for a Unix shell account---or have both! A personal
account on Telerama gives you low-cost Internet access. Do research,
make business contacts, offer job openings, and more with full
Internet access.

Includes:
unlimited dial-in connect time (terminal sessions)
      3 hours/day SLIP/PPP connect time
      1 e-mail box
      1 "user@telerama.lm.com" address
      2 Mb disk space
1 World Wide Web personal home page (http://www.lm.com/~user)

Personal accounts are for personal use by a single user. Multiple,
simultaneous logins are not allowed. Personal accounts may not be
shared.

SLIP registration is required to access SLIP and a $10
registration fee applies. Additional SLIP connect time is available
for $2/hour.

Additional disk space may be purchased for $2/megabyte per month.

CURRENT FEATURES:
-----------------

E-mail: Access to Internet e-mail, and gateways to most major
commercial services, such as CompuServe, GEnie, MCI Mail and other
networks such as FIDONet and Bitnet. Internet e-mail reaches over two
million people. Telerama features the Pine e-mail program, an
easy-to-use full screen mailer with a friendly text editor.

Telnet: Connect to other sites on the Internet. Telnet sites offer
such services as National Weather Service forecasts, library
catalogues, government press releases, multi-player games, electronic
books and thousands of others. You may select from our "Popular Telnet
Sites" menu, or telnet to anywhere you know the address.

FTP: "File Transfer Protocol" allows you to receive files from a large
number of archives where you can get fun and useful programs for your
computer, documents on all sorts of topics, and computerized images
and sounds for many different types of computers. Telerama features
the NCFTP program on its File Transfer menu.

Easy-to-use Menus: Telerama wants the Internet to be an interesting,
informative and useful place for people to spend time. For new
Internet users, we offer a menu system to help you navigate. The menus
are text-based so that all computer types can use them. All new
Personal and Business accounts start out with the menus.

UNIX Shell access: For customers who are more familiar with the
Internet, or for those who are ready to try something new, Telerama
offers access to our UNIX operating system. We recommend shell access
to anyone who wants to do file maintenance, test programs before they
are installed on the Telerama menus, compile C programs or use UNIX
features.

Downloadable files: In addition to FTP access, Telerama maintains a
local file area, a link to a major ftp archive and easy access to
your mail, news and home directory files through the Telerama File
Browser. The File Browser supports X-, Y- and Z-modem.

Gopher: Telerama's Neighborhood Gopher server includes the Community
College, a repository for documentation and tutorials; the Library
with over 150 full-text electronic books plus card catalogs, a
reference shelf and useful Internet periodicals. Our Shopping Plaza
offers goods and services for sale. Telerama's Gopher server also
includes access to over 500 other Gopher servers world-wide.

Usenet and ClariNet: Over 3000 newsgroups carry discussions about
everything from ketchup to international politics. If you have an
interest, there is a newsgroup that discusses it! ClariNet is an
Associated Press/Reuters International newsfeed that brings you real
news, "hot off the wire!" Telerama also maintains several local,
Telerama-only newsgroups.

IRC: Internet Relay Chat allows you to chat live with Internet users
all over the globe. In addition to meeting entertaining people, IRC
can be used to form study groups, hold business meetings, conduct
informal research and even take classes!

Games and Entertainment: Telerama offers easy access to over 50
multi-use dungeons and other "real-time" Internet games through our
menus. There is also a smattering of single player games available.

SLIP: Telerama offers dial-up SLIP connectitivy, which
makes your computer a host on the Internet. TCP/IP software is
required to take advantage of this service (you provide and install).
A $10 one-time registration fee will activate SLIP for your Personal
or Commercial Account and three hours/day of SLIP is included in the
monthly fee. Additional hours of SLIP are available for $2/hour.
Please note that SLIP is not available during the free trial period.

Telerama School: Classes on how to use Internet programs and services
are offered for free via the Telerama School. Classes meet on IRC and
are conducted using the Screen windowing program to allow students to
follow along with hand-on examples during the lesson. Telerama School
tutorials are also available in the Community College section of the
Gopher.

Customer and Technical Support: We strive to respond to e-mail
addressed to sysop within 24 hours. Our customer support line is
answered during business hours (Monday through Friday from 9 am to 8
pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm, Eastern time) and at any
other time someone happens to be in the office!

Telerama also offers business oriented services and UUCP connections.
Overall it is, in my opinion, the best deal in Internet service available
to those living in the Pittsburgh metro area.
