"SoundMan Wave Tone Controls for Windows"
                        Version 1.0 - Unregistered
                               April 5, 1996
                        (c)1996 by Kevin Krausnick

     PURPOSE:

This program was written to pay tribute to a truly remarkable
sound card - SoundMan Wave. Logitech is no longer manufacturing
this board, although thousands are being used. Unfortunately,
the provided Windows 3.1x software lacks a few basic features...
hence the writing of this program. SMWTONE provides the missing
Bass and Treble controls, as well as a Master Volume control and
convenient Mute option. While some might consider Bass and
Treble controls for a computer sound card to be rather
insignificant, anyone who has listened to the board's amp will
tell you that it's capabilities are really quite impressive when
fully exploited - especially if its output is fed through high
     quality or self-amplified speakers.

     USAGE:

SMWTONE is fairly straightforward in use - the Master Volume
control is adjustable from 0% to 100% (100% = highest volume).
The Bass and Treble controls can be adjusted + or - 7 steps, with
0 being the center detent, or "flat" setting. These figures do
not represent actual decibel ranges, but are simply values which
lend themselves to controlling SoundMan Wave's mixer registers
directly. The Mute option may be invoked to temporarily suspend
sound output. The Master Volume control can also be adjusted
while Mute is in effect. You might be wondering what purpose is
served by the small arrow button beside the Mute check box -
clicking this button will toggle between "full" or "compact"
views. The "compact" view can be used to reduce the amount of
screen real estate occupied by the program once the desired Bass
and Treble levels have been set.

     OPTIONS:

Select the "Always Visible" option from the Options menu if
constant access to tone controls is desired. By default, any
changes to the mixer settings are automatically restored the next
time SMWTONE is launched. This option can be disabled from the
     Options menu if need be.

Create an icon for SMWTONE in the Startup group to conveniently
launch the application every time Windows starts. Although
primarily designed for Windows 3.1 or 3.11, SMWTONE may also be
run under Windows 95 (provided no other native sound drivers are
     active).

     TECHNICAL:

This section can normally be skipped, unless you are experiencing
problems or just want more information on how to best configure
SoundMan Wave for use with SMWTONE.

Included with your SoundMan Wave were drivers for DOS and for
Windows. While it is not essential that you install the Windows
drivers or Music Rack software to use SMWTONE, the DOS driver
(SMWSET.SYS) will need to be loaded in CONFIG.SYS. This driver
initializes the board when your computer is booted. Provided the
software was installed in the default subdirectory, the entry in
     CONFIG.SYS should read as follows...

     DEVICE=C:\SOUNDMAN\SMWSET.SYS

This driver unloads itself from memory once the board has been
initialized, so it doesn't matter whether DEVICE or DEVICEHIGH is
     used in the example above.

Since SMWTONE is designed to be compact, it does not include
options for adjusting volume levels for the individual mixer
inputs (MIDI, Line In, CD Audio or Wave Audio) - please use Music
Rack to make adjustments to these settings if the need arises.
If the Windows drivers have not been installed, you can make
these adjustments by running SETUP.EXE from the C:\SOUNDMAN
subdirectory in DOS, or by editing the C:\SOUNDMAN\SOUNDMAN.INI
file directly. Reboot the computer or type "SETUP RESET" and
press ENTER from the C:\SOUNDMAN subdirectory to activate your
     changes.

When the Windows drivers for SoundMan Wave are installed, the
"load=" line in WIN.INI is modified to load a driver which sets
mixer levels when Windows is launched. The line might look as
     follows...

     load=c:\soundman\mixeron.exe clock.exe

The mixer values used by "mixeron.exe" might be different from
those used by SMWTONE, resulting in a rise or drop in sound
volume when SMWTONE is launched - to avoid this, edit WIN.INI and
remove the "c:\soundman\mixeron.exe" portion of the "load=" line.
Following the above example, the line would read as follows after
     editing this line...

     load=clock.exe

Save your changes and restart Windows for these changes to take
     effect.

     REQUIREMENTS:

SMWTONE requires VBRUN300.DLL; the Visual Basic run-time module.
VBRUN300.DLL is freely distributable and can be found on many
     ShareWare BBSs and FTP archives.

SHAREWARE: If you use SMWTONE, please consider registering
for $5 (U.S.). In return you will receive the
latest registered version of the program, along
with several other ShareWare utilities, including
                    the following...
