I can not get this mother board to recognize the awe32pnp card under
windows 95.

What is the bios fix for this problem?

I have a P/I-P55TP4XE motherboard (P-120) and I'm using the 868-chipset
video/sound card (for the MediaBus slot). It has a feature connector on
it, but I'm not getting anything out of it when connecting it to my VFX-1
HMD (or a digitizer card -- so I know it isn't the card at the other
side). Does anyone know why this might be? I don't have a manual for the
video card, so maybe there is something in there about it if someone might
check for me.

Is the feature connector disabled by default? Can I enable it?

I don't actually get "nothing" -- I think I get just a black screen,
actually, but that's close to nothing.

Any/all ideas appreciated! Thanks!

 - John...

We have a P6NP5 with the USB header pins, but the USB cable/card slot unit
is still in BETA, a very good looking prototype it is, but still a BETA.

Yes. (PS2 mouse port uses IRQ 12 usually and frees up your serial port)

I recently got an ISA ISDN board and when I went to add it I made a curious
discovery.

Before adding the board I had things configured as follows:

IRQ1 - keyboard
   2/9 - com3 (i/o board)
   3 - com2
   4 - com1
5 - soundblaster compatibility on sound card
   6 - floppy
   7 - lpt1
   10 - free (or so I thought!)
   11 - sound card
   12 - NCR/ASUS SCSI
   14/15 - IDE

I thought I had a free IRQ 10. But NO! I played with this for hours in all
kinds of combinations. Finally I discovered the screen in the BIOS Setup that
lets you indicate that some of the IRQs are used by ISA. So I set 10 to be used
by ISA. Then my sound card stopped working -- the mystery device grabbed IRQ
11! So I set 11 to be used by ISA.

After that I noticed Windows NT (winmsd) reporting that com3 was at IRQ 4
(shared with com1, which of course didn't work since the board was physically
jumpered to 2). The mystery device had grabbed IRQ9!

It seems that there is some device on the 55TP4XE that requires/steals an IRQ?
Anyone have any insight? (Q: does an S3-based Diamond Stealth (PCI) take up an
IRQ even though it isn't actually used?)

This has become a frequently asked question Curtis.

Essentially, its a crapshoot. Some 70ns-rated (often brand name) ram is
generously rated and will work at 60. Alas, much of it won't. All you
can do is try. However, since you're going to be spending approx $250
for a new CPU anyway, why not throw another $120 into the kitty and get
the proper ram?

If that's not an option, and you discover that your 70ns ram =isn't=
going to cut the mustard, you can slow your clock speed to 60 Mhz and
run your new P133 at 120 Mhz. That's kinda like throwing $50 in the
toilet, since P120s are about $50 cheaper than a P133.

My advice: Buy the P120
The real cost of purchasing the P133 will be the cost of the CPU itself
plus the cost of new ram. By purchasing the P120 you can save yourself
potentially $150-$175.

Of course you could go on up to a P150 and still use the old ram. If
your board is a P55TP4XE it will run all the way up to 166 Mhz even
with the #5 socket.

Initially at least, MMX will be in the old style Pentiums and Pentium Pro
versions *without* cache. This is quite obviously targeting the cost-sensitive
home market. Of course Intel is going to price them as high as they believe
they can, but it will have to be competitive with what else is availabe at the
same performance level.

This would be the MMX+ chip. Comes with built in GaAs laser and spindle drive

The examples you provide aren't really similar to MMX. The benefits of disk
cache for example, gives a system-wide performance boost regardless of the
software or other hardware being used. Not so with MMX. It only works in
specific areas and with only those apps written to take advantage of it. I'm
sure there will be many gaps available to fill.

I moved from a 486DX2/66 with JCIS motherboard to an ASUS
mboard (486-PVISP3) w/ 486DX4/120 with no problem. I did use the
same ISA-based SCSI board on both mb's - so the HD issue was a nonissue
for me as well. Nice motherboard.

I need to piece together some parts for a new system. Specifically I need
a Sony SEII 17" Monitor, Tyan Tomcat MB, CPU, Memory, Dynamite 128 Video
card, etc.

Could someone please recommend a_good_mail order or on-line company? I am
looking for a repuatable, honest dealer with a very good return policy.
(especially for the monitor) I know some even offer reduced shipping
charges. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Actually, Intel has been known to sell chips at lower clock speeds
than they tested at just to meet demand! The main thing to worry
about when overclocking is heat dissipation. If you can get rid of
the heat you shouldn't have to worry to much about a shortened
lifespan.

Hi All,

I'm thinking of buying an ASUS T2P4(N) MB and a friend of mine has got an
T2P4. When we tried to use busmastering IDE for WIN95, the system got A LOT
slower when starting and using WIN95. Does anyone know if this is a known
problem or should it work in principle ? Does it matter wether or not you use
the T2P4 or the T2P4N.

Why would you want to use Busmastering at all you might ask ? Well i'd like to
play MPEG files and it seems to me that the processor has better things to do
(like decoding the MPEG video and audio) than getting the data from the
harddisk/CDROM to memory.

Any response can be given either in this forum or at my email-address.

Any advise or experiences welcome,

P.J.E. Cremers

As far as Cx6x86 is concerned, no multiples of 2.5 nor 3 can be
achieved. So your board probably set the clk multiplier to 1x, ie 66
MHz. Try with a board with Lynx chipset (with 75Mhz bus) to push it to
p200+.

Does Chaintek offer support on the Inet or a bbs, is the circuit board
made with surface mount devices.

Sorry, the SP3G is only 25- or 33-MHz... There is no 40-Mhz setting.
I don't think there's a 4x setting, either...

Anyone notice that the chipset settings are the SAME for 60ns and
70ns ram? Do these settings only change for EDO ram or is my version
of the bios funky?

Call Registers, which can log upto 1200 calls, call duration , time
and can block calls (say to 900, Intnl #s) etc. readily exsist. ($199)

IMHO there is little to be gained by reinventing basic devices like these.

Nonsense!! If you put the 5x86-133 into the PVI-486SP3 you can choose between clock X3 and X4. Setting
the motherboard to clock X3, the speed is tripled. The other setting is for quadrupling.

Another nonsense! I am currently using rev. 1.21 and it works perfectly.

Yeah, because the CPU doesn't support X4 clock. If you can choose x2, x3 or x4 clock is
CPU not motherboard dependend.

I use a ps2 mouse on my p55tp4xe and it works fine (with a ps2-mouse) under
Mr-Bios. Your bios should report a ps2 mouse present if so jumpered; if not
your os will never see one. IF your bios reports a ps2 mouse then you
have to use a mouse which explicitly says it will work as a ps2 mouse AND
has the proper interface connector (if applicable). Let me know if this
works for you

Bios 1.05 btw
Just had to try this combo.. as those w/ this board know you can set the
multiples to 2.5 and 3.. so I tried pushing my p166+ from 133mhz to 165
(2.5) to 198 (3) on the 66mhz bus with the following results.

First off the machine started and made it through POST. <g> However, on
the initial bios screen it misinterpreted the chip and thought it was
running at 66mhz! Something like '6x86 at 66mhz'. I thought that odd of
course, but ran some Ziff_Davis winbench benchmarks on it. Truly sad!
Aprox. half as fast as the normal settings.. so much for the overclocking
experience with that combo. <g>

I've been lurking around Intel's site, and from what I can gather,
their only references to the Socket 5/7 appear to be in relation
to their Overdrive processors. They indicate that a Socket 5 will
accommodate an overdrive processor targeted at P75 through P120.
A Socket 7 accommodates an overdrive for a P133 system.

Long delivery can mean they do not keep much stock. A lot of these
places with limited stock operate on a shoe string inventory budget and
fit all their inventory in one large garage size room.

In some cases it's necessary, since the prices fluctuate a lot. Always
as if the stuff is in stock and when it'll ship, most places will not
outright lie.

>Most importantly PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD. It is sometimes your only

Card is the only way. I have noticed some places advertise discounts,
if you pay by check. I'd be suspicious. Unless you live w/in driving
distance, don't pay by anything but a card.

I have a similar setup that works fine.
You should know that Win 95 is much more exacting (taxing?) on the
hardware, especially in the area of memory. Any weaknesses in the
RAM or configuration settings or the abilities of the P-chip to switch
modes will be turned up by Windows much more readily than under
plain DOS.

>A fatal exception 0e has occured at 0028:c026c16b in vxd vwin32 (04)+
>00002ab7. The current application will be terminated

I can always get a fatal exception 0e if I run my swap drive out of
space. Check and see, you might be surprised to find out how
big that swapfile can grow under the default settings, even on a 32 MB
system.

If it is not running out of disk space, then the likely culprits are:
- corrupt files, perhaps do a clean re-install
- faulty or poor connections mboard/ram or combination of these
effects

If it is at all possible, see if you can swap out the RAM.

Also, I've found many various updates/drivers/patches for my similar
system.

Collect these and apply them.

For example, Asus has a recent BIOS update, version 1.05

Also get the latest Diamond video drivers.

There is a patch from Intel that allows Windows 95 to correctly detect
the PIIX3 IDE controller on the T2P4.

Hi,

I have the same board with a P166 and the same BIOS. The power
management is enabled and all is OK even in Win95. The suspend
function also works fine. Check your settings and setup of Win95

Hi,

The manual says that the default setting should be 32. Have been
wondering what are the effects of reducing this figure to say..16?

Also, what does the VGA Palette Snoop do??

Thanks.

Hi,

Don't know if this helps but here goes.

I got the BMIDE_95.EXE driver from Asus and installed that. Got the
Intel 82371SB in Control Panel. Then can't play VCDs.

Then I d/loaded PATCH95.EXE from Tyan's site and installed that. And I
got the Triton 2 drivers in Control Panel. Funny though, coz right
after this, the CD-ROM disappeared.

Up to you to experiment.

Hi,

I haven't actually seen a Gateway or your machine. If the ports for
things like mouse, video, printer etc. are all lined up in a straight
line near the bottom of the computer, you may have a proprietary
m/board and case and may not fit either the AT or ATX formats that
Asus supply.

The decision is yours but a dealer may be more help.

I've had good experience with HARMONY COMPUTERS in New York and CDW.
Harmony has very aggressive pricing and carries only selected items
but they shipped when they said they would.

ALWAYS use a major credit card when shopping mailorder. You have much
better recourse in the event something goes wrong.

As for purchasing a big item such as a monitor, these things are so
heavy that there is always a possibility for damage in shipment. I'm
somewhat of a video purist myself and refuse to accept a poorly aligned
CRT. For this reason I chose to purchase the monitor locally and simply
arm-twisted for the best price. We opened up the monitor at the store &
hooked it up to make sure it was satisfactory before taking it home.
When you're dropping a thousand bucks on a fine 17-in monitor, this is
something you just do.... Yes, I could have saved a hundred bucks or
so, counting tax, but having a local shoulder to cry on means something
when the investment is substantial.

Just my $.02

My Cantek order was shipped from ASA. I was happy with Cantek and will
probably do business with them again. Latest glimpses at their web page
shows their prices to be very competitive.

I lost 3 WD Drives to this exact problem a few months back (1 1.2 21200, & 2
2.1 32100 drives). My board is a TP4N. I Upgraded to BIOS ver 2.01 at that
time and I never had the problem again (I didn't know til now that is what
stopped the failures, just good luck I guess :) ).

I've had good luck with Motherboard Super Store (www.mssi.com, or
800-364-7232) for motherboards, Megahaus/Dirt Cheap drives for
storage, and Computability for video, audio, etc. MSSI is by far the
best MB outfit I've tried (and I've had experience with a lot of
them).
