Games these days use a 32 bit extender called DOS4GW, and while some
16 bit code is still necessary for DOS interface, it's generally not
present in, for instance, a render loop. So games are flying on
PPros. Go look at the benchmarks yourself:

You can most definitely install NT 4.0 over a Windows '95 machine.
I've done it 4 or 5 times. And this was the beta 2.

As far as I know this MOBO only supports a DX100

From anecdotal experience:

It is quite likely that you need to rerun the Windoze 95 setup.

Very generously microsoft install CPU speed specific code to make the
system run at peak speed/efficiency.

As usual however Old Bill's Boys do it the opposite of any sensible
engineer and install only the code for one speed. This means that a
different cpu makes it hopeless. [ A sensible engineer would pick the
right code at BOOT TIME and you'd never have a problem. ]

Rerunning setup (to some extent) should make it validate the speed
code and reinstall stuff that works. I do not think it takes a full
reinstall but I'm not aware which bit of setup triggers the speed code
reinstall.

The is based on the cripling of a hard disk installation moved from
486dx33 to 486dx66.

I have had the same result with the 3.11 drivers. [16771311.zip -
1,189,280, 16772311.zip 853,743]

When I reinstalled the 3.01 drivers the problem went away. Matrox
tech support suggested several fixes which did not work.

I downloaded the drivers from the matrox ftp site twice with no change
in the problem.

The latest tech support info was that the web site drivers were
corrupted and had been taken down, however they are still on the ftp
site. My system consists of:

	1) ASUS P55T2P4 with 512K PL cache 32 MB EDO RAM
		430HX chipset step A-1 [430HX - SU087, PIIX - SU052]
	2) Matrox Millennium (OEM) 2.0 BIOS w 2MB WRAM
	3) Buslogic FlashPoint LT SCSI controller
		a. HP 1 GB HD
		b. Maxtor 1.2 GB HD
		c. Toshiba 3201 CD-ROM
	4) WD 32100 2.1 GB EIDE hard drive run off MB cntrlr
	5) Samsung 17GLSi Monitor

We're talking about the PCI/I SP3 (no G, not the PVI), right? I think the manual
states 2x36, double sided for 8meg simms. (But hey, if i can go non-parity and
save some money, why not!). Does it matter what bank is parity/non-parity? thx...

No, it _doesn't_. It runs 16-bit apps closer to a Pentium 200, and 32-bit
apps under Win95 significantly faster than a P-200.

A HX tester that has never been run on a HX machine! That's good!

Nothing personal, Paul, but if I wanted to spread a new virus, I'd try
it that way, too.

I know it's an ASUS group, but this is where I hang out and most of you really
know what your'e talking about, so I'll ask...

Want to pick up a Zip drive and considering the following:

Iomega Zip Drive - Parallel Port (external)
Iomega Zip Drive - SCSI (internal or external)

Syquest EZ-Zip - IDE (internal)
Syquest EZ-Zip - SCSI

My System: ASUS P55TP4N, Pentium 100, 2 GB Maxtor HD, 540 MB Conner, Sound
Blaster, etc...

I like the Iomega because I see more of them around in ads and stuff, and the
Parallel port external will take like 30 seconds to install.

I like the Syquest because it uses 135 MB cartriges that only cost (in my
area, anyway) $1 more than 100 MB Iomega cartriges. I also think the IDE
internal may be faster, but am not sure.

As for SCSI, I'm all IDE right now so would have to buy a SCSI card. Not the
end of the world, since I'd eventually like to add other things like a scanner
and tape backup and SCSI would be nice. I think the SCSI zip drives are also
a lot faster (right??).

Can anyone suggest a good SCSI card if I go that way? I've conisdered Adaptec,
either 2940W or 2940UW, and they seem expensive but have a good reputation,
and you usually get what you pay for. Any suggestions on these two cards, or
maybe others that are better (or about the same but less expensive)?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Paul
