                            PUMA Shareware
                              Presents:
                            Typing BLASTER

Congratulations on selecting a PUMA Shareware product. At PUMA we
are dedicated to producing quality software that is straight-
forward and easy to use so that the student can concentrate on
mastering the lessons. You can master the program in less than
5 minutes and will not find lots of switches or options to learn.

Typing BLASTER is a three part PUMA Shareware Typing Course.
It is designed to significantly improve both speed and accuracy of
the alpha and numeric keys. Although it assumes that the student
is a touch typist, it can also be used to improve hunt and pecking
speed or one handed typing.

The PUMA Shareware Typing Course is composed of 50 typing
exercises and tests. The 16 exercises and tests which are marked
with a asterisk are available in the shareware versions of the
course. Registration is required to obtain the remaining 34
exercises and tests.

Registration for the whole 3 part course, Typing DRILLS, Numpad
DRILLER and Typing TESTER is $15.00. Registered users will
receive a password, via Email, to the exercises and tests 3 - 5 in
there shareware versions and will receive the complete registered
version by mail, usually within a week. They will also qualify
for discounts on other PUMA Shareware software and will qualify
for special custom programming of the PUMA Shareware Flashcard
program.

To run the first lesson, enter: LESSON3
Documentation: README.TEXT

Getting started:

At startup you will be given two options. The first is the
required password. If you are not a registered user, enter 999 to
gain access to exercises 1 or 2. The second option is the
exercise or test. Registered users who have entered the pass
word correctly may select from exercises (1 - 5). Others will be
limited to exercises (1 & 2).

One important thing you need to know is how to get out of the
program if you want to return to the operating system. That's
easy, press <CTRL e> followed by <Enter>.

When you enter the exercise number you will be taken to the typing
screen. The timer has been activated and you are presented with a
line of text to type. Type it exactly as it is and press enter.
Another line of text will appear. Continue typing. As each line
of text is entered the typing speed in words per minute will
appear in the upper center of the screen.

Note 2: In Lesson 8 the enter key and back space key are inactive.
The operator keys (+, -, *, /, =) enter the number and you can not
backspace over errors. Ignore the space between the number and
the operator, which has been inserted for readablilty.

In all lessons except Lesson 8 (see Note 2 ), if you mistype
something you can use the backspace key to correct it. When you
enter a line that contains an error, there will be a beep and the
cursor will move to the upper right corner of the screen. When
typing for speed bump a key to get the next line of text. If you
are making errors you may wish to pause after the beep and examine
your input compared to the correct input listed immediately above
your input line.

Each exercise contains about 100 words (500 characters). You will
be given 5 chances to obtain a high score for the exercise. After
the 5th try the program pauses and lists your high score in red.
Make a note of it. The program will recycle back to the password
screen and you may try the exercise over or try another exercise.

You will be surprised at how quickly you will make progress and
how far you can advance over time. The key is to develop a habit
of practicing each day. you may wish to set aside a time when you
first turn on your computer for the day to limber up your fingers.

Each lesson has been designed to exercise your fingers on a
different set of keys so take your time to work your way through
the whole course. Best results will be obtained by working on the
weakest fingers.

When you start a lesson, try all of the exercises one time and
record your "best out of five" score for each exercise. Next work
on the exercise with the lowest score until you set a new high
score for that exercise. Record the new score and move to an
exercise with the next lowest score.

It is recommended that you practice no more than two sets of 5
repetitions at one sitting. Start out slowly and increase your
speed with each repetition. Slow down if you are making errors
and push yourself as you feel your fingers smoothing out. As
with any form of self improvement, patience and REGULAR practice
are key.

Review:

When you have mastered lesson 3 continue with lesson 6. I like to
go back and review all previous lessons after completing a lesson.
The repetition and review will are important to steady progress.

Shareware:

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it,
you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on
details -- some request registration while others require it, some
specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get any-
thing from the simple right to continue using the software to an
updated program with printed material.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the shareware, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.

Users of PUMA Shareware programs must accept this disclaimer of
warrenty: The programs are supplied as is. The author disclaims
all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for
any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct
or consequential, which may result from the use of PUMA Shareware
programs.

PUMA Shareware programs are "Shareware" and are provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share them with
your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products.

If you find a PUMA Shareware program useful and find that you are
using the program and continue to use it after a reasonable trial
period, you must make a registration payment of $15. The $15
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another.
Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
same time.

You are encouraged to pass a copy of PUMA Shareware PROGRAMS
along to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to
register their copy if they find that they can use it. All
registered users will receive a copy of the latest version of the
the program, receive discounts on future purchases, and qualify
for custom programming in the flashcard format.
