.topic Chain
Move: Chain

The definitions given here are from standard couple formation
for clarity; however, chain is performed in this software as a
right dancer/left dancer move instead of a man/lady move as is
the usual practice. For instance four men can chain with the
right hand men performing the ladies part in the following
definitions.

a. Two Ladies

Starting Formation: Facing Couples

Definition:
The ladies step forward, extend right hands to each other and
pull by. Each man steps forward and to the right turning left to
face the same direction as the lady beside him. The lady
extends a left hand to the man for a courtesy turn. Couples end
facing each other.

b. Four ladies

Starting Formation: Square or Circle of 8.

Definition:
Similar to Two Ladies except that all four ladies step to
the center and form a right hand star. They turn the star
halfway around to their opposite men. All courtesy turn to
face the center of the set.

c. 2 or 4 ladies chain 3/4

Starting Formation: Square or Circle of 8

The directed ladies step to the center form a right hand star
and turn the star three-quarters. All courtesy turn to face the
center of the set.

d. Ladies Chain Right/Left

Starting Formation: Square or Circle of 8

Designated Ladies will do a two ladies chain with the lady in
the right or left hand couple as indicated. Ending facing the
center of the set.

flow is imparted to the dancers and the directions of, for
example, ladies in men sashay, is determined.

Starting Formation: Square

A call that has the sides doing one part at the same time the
heads are doing another. Heads move forward into the square (four
steps), turning 1/4 (90 degrees) on the fourth step to face
partners and back away to the sides of the square (four
steps). Turn 1/4 (90 degrees) to face the original
opposites. Back away to the corners of the square (four
steps) and turn 1/4 (90 degrees) to face original partners and
walk to home (four steps). Do not turn. (Total to here: 16
steps.) From this point the action is reversed. Heads back away
from their partners (four steps), turning 1/4 (90 degrees) on
the fourth step and walk forward to the opposites (four steps).

Turn 1/4 and walk forward into the center toward partner (four
steps). Turn 1/4 (90 degrees) to face opposites and back up
to home. (Total: 32 steps.) While the head couples are doing
the first 16 steps, the sides start by facing their
partners to back away and do the second 16 steps. Completing
this the sides do the first 16 steps while the heads are doing
the last 16.
The principle of walking three steps and then turning (or
reversing) on the fourth step is followed throughout. If no
distance is given, the movement goes 32 beats unless it is
interrupted by the caller. If " Half-Way" is indicated the
movement is 16 beats in duration. This call may be broken into
fractional parts by the caller directing the number of steps
required. The call may also start with the heads, or other
designated dancers, directed to face.

walking straight forward at the completion of the call.It is an
instruction to the dancer(s) to turn individually in place,
one-quarter (90 degrees) more in the direction of body flow
determined by the preceding command.

Note: If "______ & Roll" is added to a call which, by definition,

Move: Spread

Starting formation: Various.

Move Definition

This Call can be used in three ways:

         1) If only some of the dancers are directed to spread
(ie: From a static square, "Heads Star Thru & Spread"), they
slide apart sideways to become ends, as the inactive dancers
step forward between them.

         2) If the "Anything" call finishes in lines or waves
(ie: {Follow Your Neighbor:FollowYourNeighbor}), the centers
anticipate the Spread action by sliding apart sideways to become
the new ends, while the original ends anticipate the Spread
action by moving into the nearest center position.

         3) If the "Anything" call finishes in tandem couples
(ie: "Wheel & Deal" from a line of four), The lead dancers slide
apart sideways, while the trailing dancers step forward between
them.

.topic TeacupChain
Move: Teacup Chain

Starting Formation: Static Square or proceeding from everyone
doing a Left Arm Turn with partner at squared set position.

Move Definition:
The caller will specify which ladies to move to the center at
the start of the call, (ie: "Head Ladies center for a
Teacup Chain") (For the rest of the definition, these two ladies
will be called the "specified ladies.")

The specified ladies (both Head ladies or both Side ladies or
all ladies) move to the center and Star Right 3/4 (270 degrees)
to meet their corners for a Left Arm Turn. At the same time, the
other ladies move to the right around the perimeter of the
square to their corners, and do a Right Arm Turn.

Following the Arm Turns, the specified ladies move around the
perimeter of the square to their new corners for a Right Arm
Turn, while the other ladies go to the center and Star Left 1
1/4 (360 degrees plus 90 degrees more) to meet their new corners
for a Right Arm Turn. The specified ladies then move to the
center and Star Left 1 1/4 (360 degrees plus 90 degrees more)
to their new corners for a Right Arm Turn, while the other
ladies move to their new corners (around the perimeter of the
square) for a Left Arm Turn. Finally, the specified ladies
move to their new corners (their original partners) for either
a Courtesy Turn or a Left Arm Turn leading to the next command.
Everyone finishes with their original partner.

If the caller desires the men to execute the ladies part and
vice-versa, as described above, the starting formation is a
Static Square with couples Half Sashayed, or proceeding from
everyone doing a Left Arm Turn with their partner. The
proper command given is "Head (or Side or all or no) Men Center
for a Teacup Chain."

Help Topic: General Information on Help

The on-line help system of this software can be expanded and
edited to suit the individual preferences of each owner.

The user-defined help file can be found in the "TANZHELP.TXT"
file. (Tanz is the German word for dance, -- I was running out of
filenames that used the word "dance" so I got creative.) Editing
this file customizes the on-line help.

After editing the file the help text needs to be compiled into a
form that the program can use. This is done by running the
batchfile "MAKEHELP.BAT". At this time the program will build the
on-line help system menus based on the information in the text
file "TANZHELP.TXT".

By editing this text file you can customize the help system. The
structure of this file is described elsewhere in the on line
help.

It is important that the format is followed closely for the help
system to work correctly.

For more information see the users manual.

.topic SplitCounterRotate

Move: Split (Box) Counter Rotate

Move Definition:

Box Counter Rotate:Each dancer walks around the center of his box
in the direction he is facing 90 degrees to the next box position
for each quarter mentioned in a smooth arcing motion.

Split Counter Rotate: The square is split to form two boxes. Each
box does a box counter rotate.

Program Differences:When calling a box counter rotate, the
desired box must always be identified explicitely. For example in
parallel columns if you wanted the centers to box counter rotate
you must call "CENTERS BOX COUNTER ROTATE" and not simply "BOX
COUNTER ROTATE." This is to resolve some ambiguities that can
exist in some situations.
