WORDPERFECT 5.1 OTHER FEATURES LIST OF COMMON CALLS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: THIS FILE CAN BE DOWNLOADED AS CCFTWP51.ZIP

(10/21/91)
COLUMNS - NEWSPAPER/PARALLEL DIFFERENCES CONFUSING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers call confused about the difference between Newspaper and
Parallel Columns. Often the confusion comes from not understanding how the
text flows from column to column. Some customers begin using Newspaper
Columns (the default), try to use them with Parallel applications, and then
call when they discover there are hard page breaks [HPg] between each row of
items. Other customers select Parallel Columns, try to use them with
Newspaper applications, and then call when the text flows onto the next page
rather than into the next column.

(11/04/91)
COPY/MOVE - USING DOC 2 TO TRANSFER TEXT
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers need help copying or moving text from one file to another.
They are often unaware that they can press Block (Alt-F4) to block the text,
press Copy/Move (Ctrl-F4), and then press Switch (Shift-F3) to place the text
in the Doc 2 screen. A shortcut for copying text to another screen is to
block the text, press Ctrl-Insert, press Switch and press Enter in the desired
location (press Ctrl-Delete instead of Ctrl-Insert to move text). This
shortcut will not work on an old style keyboard; the keyboard must be enhanced
for the Ctrl-Insert and Ctrl-Delete keystrokes to work.

( 4/08/91)
DIRECTORY STRUCTURES - MOVING SUBDIRECTORY FILES
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers who do not understand directory structures call WordPerfect
asking for help in moving all their files from one directory to another.

This call is often generated by customers who have recently updated their WP
program and wish to move all their document files to a new subdirectory. This
can be a lengthy call when the customer's document files are all stored by
default in the same directory as the program files. One quick way to sort out
document files from program files is to turn on List Files Long Display. To
quickly mark all document files to be copied to another directory, press Home
then an asterisk.

( 2/12/90)
DISPLAY PITCH NOT READJUSTING
--------------------------------------------------
Display Pitch makes adjustments that make the text appear more like it will
appear when it prints. This is commonly seen when using tabular columns or
when changing to a smaller font. But, when the factors causing the outward
adjustment are removed or reduced (e.g. another font change), display pitch
doesn't readjust. One method to readjust display pitch is to do a screen
rewrite (Ctrl F3, 3).

If you receive a call where the display pitch has not readjusted properly
without the screen rewrite, put a tally next to this item and fill out an STR
with customer information only. We will send the customer a memo
explaining Display Pitch.

( 8/13/90)
DISPLAY PITCH SPREADING
--------------------------------------------------
As display pitch adjusts the text (usually because of a smaller font), it
often adds extra space at tabs, margin releases, indents, etc. Because of the
extra white space on the screen, the document does not fit on one screen and
the customer must shift the text back and forth to read the document.
If you receive a call where the customer is complaining about extra white
space added because of display pitch, please fill out an STR with customer
information only and we will send the customer a memo explaining Display
Pitch.

( 4/13/92)
DOCUMENT COMPARE - MARKS PHRASES, NOT WORDS
--------------------------------------------------
Customers using the Document Compare feature are often dissatisfied when they
realize the feature marks phrases of text where changes were made rather than
just the specific words which have been changed. For example, a customer
might retrieve a document, change the word much to the word extensive in the
following sentence: "In the past, there has been extensive research done on
this subject." The customer then presses Mark Text (Alt-F5), Generate (6),
Compare Screen and Disk Documents and Add Redline and Strikeout (2), and
Enter. The feature will display the following sentences:
"In the past, there has been extensive research done on the subject. there has
been much research done on the subject."

Customers find it is difficult to locate changes to specific words when they
must look through complete phrases. (A phrase is defined as the text found
between two phrase markers; markers can be punctuation marks, codes, or the
end of the document. For more information, see Document Compare in the
Reference section of the manual.)

( 1/14/91)
HEADERS/FOOTERS - SPACE BETWEEN TEXT AND HEAD/FOOT
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers would like to control the amount of space between the text and
headers and footers. This option could be added when the header or footer is
defined.

( 2/12/90)
HORIZONTAL SCROLLING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers have complained when horizontal scrolling was required.
Horizontal scrolling occurs when the horizontal text does not fit on one
complete screen and the customer must scroll from left to right to read the
screen. This problem is most often caused when a small or proportional font
is selected. One temporary work around is to have the customer choose a
Courier 10 pitch font for text editing and then change the font for final
formatting. (This would not work for a customer who is using tabular columns
and plans on selecting another final font.)

(10/14/91)
INITIAL CODES - INSERTING CODES CONFUSING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers call confused about how to insert codes while in the Setup
Initial Codes screen (Shift-F1, 4, 5) or the Document Initial Codes screen
(Shift-F8, 3, 2). After they find the screen, they are unsure of what to do
next. They see the message "Press exit when done", but don't realize they
need to enter the same keystrokes in the Initial Codes screen that they would
in the normal document screen in order to insert the desired codes.

( 3/23/92)
KEYBOARDS - ENHANCED SELECTED BECAUSE OF NAME
--------------------------------------------------
Customers who select the Enhanced soft keyboard in the Setup: Keyboard Layout
menu (Shift-F1, 5) often choose that option because it matches their enhanced
hardware keyboard. These customers then become confused when the keys do not
work as expected, e.g., the Home key (which is re-mapped) does not function
the same as it did when they had the original keyboard selected.

( 6/17/91)
LINE DRAW - DASHED OR DISJOINTED LINES
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers call because when they are using Line Draw, the lines are
dashed or disjointed. This can be caused if the customer is using a
proportional font, or if the customer has Justification turned on. To correct
the problem, the customer should set Justification to Left and select a fixed
pitch font, i.e. Courier 10cpi.

( 4/13/92)
LIST FILES - "RETRIEVE INTO CURRENT DOCUMENT?" MSG
--------------------------------------------------
Customers who are trying to retrieve a document from List Files are confused
when they see the message "Retrieve into current document? No (Yes)".
WordPerfect generates the message if text or codes exist in the current
document. (When Shift-F10 is used to retrieve a file into a current document,
the message is not generated.) In some cases, customers may press the space
bar or some other key which creates a code, not realize the code exists, and
try to retrieve a document. Because WP interprets the code as part of a
current document, the message is generated. In other
cases, customers do not realize they should exit the document on their screen
before retrieving the new document.
Customers can clear the document screen by deleting the codes or by pressing
Exit (F7), N, N; or, they can answer Yes to the prompt and then delete any
extraneous codes.

( 4/20/92)
LIST FILES - COMBINING 2 OR MORE DOCUMENTS
--------------------------------------------------
Problem: Customers are unaware of the quickest methods to combine two or more
documents to make a single
document. Customers often ask how to "merge" two documents and thus attempt
to combine documents using the Merge
feature.

Solution: The quickest method to combine two full documents is to retrieve
the first document using Retrieve
(Shift-F10) or List Files (F5), move the cursor to the bottom of the document
(Home, Home, Down Arrow), and retrieve
the second document. (If retrieving the second document using List Files,
answer Yes when prompted "Retrieve into
current document?".)

The quickest method to combine only a portion of one document with another is
to retrieve the first document
into the Doc 1 screen; Switch (Shift-F3) to the Doc 2 screen; retrieve the
second document; Block (Alt-F4) the portion of
the document which will be combined with the first document; select Move
(Ctrl-F4), Block (1), Copy (2); Switch (Shift-F3)
back to the Doc 1 screen; move the cursor to the position where the text
should be placed; and press Enter.

( 1/13/92)
PASSWORD - MISUSE MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers are concerned about the intentional or inadvertent misuse of
the Password option found in Text In/Out (Ctrl-F5), Password (2). For
example, some customers are concerned that important documents will be
passworded and that the password will be forgotten or that a disgruntled
employee will intentionally withhold the password from others. Often, these
customers would like the ability to control who has access to the Password
option.

( 3/02/92)
REVEAL CODES - DON'T HAVE TO BE TURNED OFF
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers do not realize they can leave Reveal Codes on while using other
WordPerfect features. For example, some customers think they must turn Reveal
Codes off (Alt-F3 or F11) before using a feature which changes the editing
screen, such as List Files or Switch. Turning Reveal Codes off before using
some WP features such as Spell, Generate, or Print will speed up the process
(especially in large documents), however, it is optional not mandatory.

( 6/24/91)
REVEAL CODES - LACK OF UNDERSTANDING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers who call WordPerfect are unfamiliar with Reveal Codes. When
they are shown the feature, they act surprised and confused by the screen.
Many have a hard time understanding that the text below the tab ruler line is
the same text as that above the ruler line, but with the hidden formatting
codes revealed.

( 4/13/92)
SORT - INCONSISTENT TABS CAUSE SORT PROBLEMS
--------------------------------------------------
Customers trying to sort by line may discover the lines do not sort as
expected because of an inconsistent number of Tab codes and fields. For
example, a customer may have created a document which contains two columns of
information, name and phone number by typing in the name and then pressing the
Tab key as many times as necessary to get to the 3" position (Pos 3") where
they then type the phone number. The lines might appear as follows in Reveal
Codes:

John Doe[Tab][Tab][Tab](801) 123-4567[HRt]
Benjamin Franklin[Tab](432) 123-4567[HRt]

If the customer wishes to sort the phone numbers numerically by area code,
they may assume the column of phone numbers is the second field and sort by
pressing Merge/Sort (Ctrl-F9), Sort (2), Enter, Enter, Keys (3), n (numeric),
2 (second field), F7, Perform Action (1). The customer does not realize that
each Tab code is a field delimiter and represents the beginning or end of a
field. In the above example, John Doe's phone number is actually in the
fourth field ("John Doe" is in the first field and fields two and three are
empty because nothing exists between the Tab codes). For the sort to work
properly, the customer should delete the default tab stops, set one tab stop
at 3", and then type the list. This will insert only one Tab code between
columns and maintain consistency by creating only two fields (i.e., names in
the first field and phone numbers in the second field).

( 9/02/91)
SORT/SELECT - INPUTTING A SELECT STRING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers using the Sort feature are confused when inputting a Select
string (Ctrl-F9, 2, Enter, Enter, 4). Select strings are used to isolate
certain records or lines of text from others.

One of the problems encountered when creating a Select string is that
customers don't understand what the logical operators (+, *, =, <>, >, <, >=,
and <=) represent or how to use them. Another problem encountered is that
customers don't know the correct syntax for the Select string. For example,
the customer does not know whether to type the string with spaces between each
operator or with no spaces (key1 = UT, or the correct way key1=UT). It seems
that customers respond well when shown visual examples from the manual (see
Sort, Select Records in the Reference section).

( 1/20/92)
SORT/SELECT - KEYS CONCEPT AND MENU CONFUSING
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers require help setting up keys when in the Sort menu--Merge/Sort
(Ctrl-F9), Sort (2), Enter, Enter. Often customers do not understand the
concept of a key, how to begin defining a key, or how a key is used to perform
a sort or select. In some cases, customers attempt to define the keys
themselves and then find after performing the sort or select they have defined
the keys incorrectly.

( 7/15/91)
SPACE CODE - DISPLAYED IN REVEAL CODES
--------------------------------------------------
Many WordPerfect customers have problems with their documents which are caused
by randomly or misplaced spaces. These customers often don't recognize the
problem in Reveal Codes because they don't see a code for the space.

For example, the Center Page [Center Pg] code must be placed before a text
code. If the customer first typed a space and then inserted the Center Page
code, the Center Page would not work unless the space was moved or deleted.
Often, when these customers call and are asked to read the codes in Reveal
Codes, they don't read the space and therefore assume that the Center Page
code is the first code in the document. This is just one example of how a
misplaced space code will affect the formatting of the document.

( 2/24/92)
VIEW DOCUMENT - "INVALID GRAPHICS DRIVER" MESSAGE
--------------------------------------------------
Many customers who are trying to use the View Document feature do not know
what to do when they receive the error message "Invalid graphics driver" after
pressing Print (Shift-F7), View Document (6). Customers are unaware that this
message is generated because WP cannot find any graphics drivers, no driver
has been selected, an incorrect driver is selected, or hardware limitations
exist. In many cases, the problem is solved by simply selecting a new or
different graphics driver in the Setup (Shift-F1), Display (2), Graphics
Screen Type (2) screen; or by installing the graphic drivers. If customers do
not know what type of graphics card their computer has, they can use the
Auto-select (2) option and WP will look for the "best fit" and select it. For
more information, see Graphics Screen Type in the Reference section of the
manual.
