    INTRODUCTION

This document contains all the information an experienced user needs to
install the Intel 2400 BPS modems. If you're not an experienced user,
you should use the modem's manual for installation instructions or have
        your dealer install the modem.

Intel currently makes the following three 2400 BPS modems:

2400B Classic Internal modem for IBM PC, PC XT, PC AT, COMPAQ 386 and
                        100% compatible computers.

        2400B Modem 2 Internal modem for IBM PS/2 Models 50, 50Z, 60, 70 and
                        80, and 100% compatible computers.

2400EX External Modem for any computer with an external RS232
                        port connector.

Refer to the installation sections that apply to the modem you're
        installing.

    SETTING SWITCHES

    2400B CLASSIC MODEM

Before installing the 2400B Classic Modem into the computer, set its
switches for an address not used by any other serial ports or mouse in
your computer. If you have just one serial port, COM2 should work
        fine.

    INSTALLING THE MODEM

    BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before installing any new device (modems included), always verify that
your computer is operating correctly. Fix any existing problems BEFORE
        installing an Intel modem.

Once you know the computer is operating correctly, use the steps
outlined in the appropriate section to install the Intel modem.

    2400B MODEM 2

        1. Turn off the power switch on the system unit and any attached
            equipment.
        2. Remove the system unit's cover.
        3. Insert the modem into an empty slot inside the computer.
        4. Replace the system unit's cover.
        5. Plug one end of the telephone cable provided with your modem into
the connector labeled LINE and plug the other end into the wall
            jack.
        6. To continue using the phone, connect it to the modem by plugging
the free end of the telephone's cord into the connector labeled
            PHONE on the modem.
        7. Turn on the computer and boot up using the Reference Disk.
        8. Press Enter when the IBM logo appears.
        9. Type N when asked "Automatically Configure System?".
        10. If you haven't already done so, make a backup copy of your original
            Reference Diskette.
        11. Select Copy an Option Diskette to copy the Intel 2400B Modem 2
Options diskette to your Reference Diskette.
        12. Select Set Configuration from the Main Menu.
        13. Select Change Configuration from the Set Configuration menu.
        14. Select a serial port for the 2400B Modem 2 to use which does not
conflict with other serial ports in your computer. SERIAL_2
usually works fine. An asterisk (*) appears when the current
choice conflicts with an existing serial port.
        15. Save the configuration information and exit from the program.
Remove the Reference Diskette from drive A and put in a safe place.

        1. Obtain a cable which has a 25-pin connector on one end and a
connector on the other end that mates with the serial port on your
computer (usually either 9-pin, 25-pin, or DIN connector). This
cable is not included with the 2400EX.
        2. Turn off the power switch on the system unit and any attached
            equipment.
