WHAT TYPE OF MODEMS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
-------------------------------------

eSoft generally does not offer specific modem recommendations. What modem
brand and model you choose depends largely on your application, needs and
price requirements.

We do, however, recommend that you avoid inexpensive, mass market modems, the
type most commonly found in retail computer and electronics stores. Such
modems are designed primarily for routine dial out use, not 24-hour, 100% duty
cycle environments like that of a bulletin board system. Poor component
quality, incomplete or buggy modem firmware, poor design and other problems
frequently show in modem lock-ups, overheating, anomalous operation, excessive
line noise and user difficulty in connecting. Since a modem is the sole
gateway into your system, the better the modem you buy, the more reliable your
system will be.

Currently, we believe one of the better modems available for BBS use (and also
one of the more economical) is the Hayes Optima 144. This modem is available
to bulletin board sysops for $179** each on Hayes' Sysop Discount Program.
For more details on this program, contact Hayes at (404) 840-9200 Voice, or
(404) 446-6336 BBS.

If you prefer, virtually any "Hayes compatible" modem will work with TBBS.
You should check the modem listing in CEDIT (TBBS 2.2 and higher) or in the
manual (TBBS 2.1 and lower) for supported modems. If you use TBBS 2.2 or
higher, obtain the latest MODEM.DEF file from the eSoft Support Board for the
latest modem listing. Modems in this listing have been tested for use with
TBBS. Please note, however, that the appearance of a modem in our list does
not imply that eSoft feels that the quality of the modem is adequate for use
in a TBBS environment.
