WHAT IS V.42BIS?
----------------

V.42bis is an international data compression standard for modems. When
V.42bis is active during a given modem connection, data can be transparently
compressed (made smaller) so the data is sent faster. For example, a 9600 bps
modem usually will send data at 960 cps (characters or bytes per second).
When data compression is active, this rate can grow much higher, usually
around 1200 cps. This means that the modem will actually be performing as
though it were a 12000 bps modem, even though it's technically only running at
9600 bps. This increase is called "effective throughput" referring to the
effective (versus real) performance of the modem.

Keep in mind that in order for V.42bis data compression to work, the standard
must be present and enabled in the modems at both ends of a given connection.
Most modems sold today include V.42bis data compression.

Also note that in order for data compression to work properly, specialized
modem setups are required on both ends of the connection as well. With TBBS,
our standard modem setups will properly activate data compression features for
any modem that has them. For your callers, however, they should contact the
manufacturer of their communications software for assistance with proper modem
setup for maximum data compression effect.
