Letter from Phil
by Phil Becker

This is the third issue of your Possibilities newsletter, and the response so
far has been very favorable. In the first issue I asked you to let me know
what you wanted to see here, and you have responded enthusiastically.

The first thing you will notice this month is that the newsletter is 50%
larger. This gives us more room to provide the types of information and
articles you want to see. This of course means that you need to keep the
feedback coming. Let us know when we do it right, and when we do it wrong.

This month we begin a three part series by Alan Bryant which addresses the
questions we most often are asked about modems. The world of modems is
getting more complex every day, and you need to understand it to make good
purchasing decisions. There no longer is a single "best modem" which we can
recommend. You now need to consider your application demands as well as the
costs to choose the best modem for your application. Alan's series will make
you a better informed consumer in this area.

In the future look for more series on topics such as using SDL to make menus
easier to design. Let me know what you want to see -- this is your newsletter
after all.

Another request we have frequently received takes the form of "tell us more
about these other products eSoft has". My article on TDBS is the first
response to this request, and we will do more about other products in future
issues. Also, the Status section has expanded to a full page to allow a brief
description of each TBBS expansion product to be added there as well.

TDBS 1.1 will be shipping soon and it is a free upgrade to all registered
users of TDBS 1.0. The key words here are "registered user". If you have
TDBS 1.0 be sure you send in your registration card. It would be a shame not
to get free software just because you didn't send in the form, now wouldn't
it?

The Integrated Mail System (TIMS) has now been shipping for a while and is
being well received. Any of you who know the Amateur FidoNet world are aware
that this is the most rugged test of a piece of software there is. It is a
laboratory for all sorts of software, and at the same time has a tremendous
amount of data passed every day. TIMS has entered this arena and performed
very well indeed, which means to me that it is already a very solid product.

I have heard from several that the manual for TIMS is the first one they have
ever seen that explains FidoNet and Store and Forward technology so they could
understand it. As this manual shows, the staff additions to eSoft will make
many things better about our products besides the software itself. Expect to
see the other product manuals improve now that I have this type of talent
available in Alan Bryant.

By far the most enthusiasm has been shown for the user profile articles. Be
assured that we will continue to do the research necessary to bring you a user
profile every month. This month we look at the U.S. Department of Commerce
system. I am trying to make each user profile cover a different application
area so that you can really see the possibilities of TBBS in action. It is
exciting to me to see these articles about how you are using my software.
This is what it is all about for me -- seeing problems solved by TBBS which
wouldn't have been handled as well by other methods.
