USING THE USROBOTICS COURIER HST MODEM
--------------------------------------

SUPERCEDES PRINTED MANUAL

THIS INFORMATION APPLIES ONLY TO TBBS VERSION 2.1

The TBBS manual contains one error which under certain circumstances can be
problematic, and is especially evident when eSoft's TIMS product is installed.
In addition, Courier HST modems manufactured or upgraded since Summer, 1990
contain a V.42/V.42bis enhancement. This enhancement provides superior error
correction and data compression. This Tech Note corrects the error in the
TBBS manual, and also explains how to enable the V.42/V42bis enhancements for
models so equipped.

                             Switch Settings

As the modem is taken out of the box from the factory, you MUST change the
settings of Switches 1 & 6. These are shipped in the DOWN position, and you
must set them to the UP position. This will make the switch settings match
those given in the TBBS 2.1 manual under the USR Courier HST 9600 modem
setting as follows:

  SW1 - UP SW2 - UP
  SW3 - DOWN SW4 - UP
  SW5 - DOWN SW6 - UP
  SW7 - UP SW8 - DOWN
  SW9 - DOWN SW10 - UP

                    CEDIT Port/Modem Options Settings

In CEDIT use the following settings:

MODEM:
   Type = 4
   INIT = ATE0Q0X1V0M0S0=1S2=255S7=20S15=24

PORT:
   I/F = LOCK 19200
   RTS/CTS = Y
   The other 4 settings = N

                        MODEMSET Pre-Conditioning

If you have an older HST (manufactured or upgraded prior to Summer, 1990) which
DOES NOT contain the V.42/V.42bis upgrade, use the MODEMSET program to "pre-
condition" the modem as follows:

AT&F&C1&D2&B1&A0&M4&H1&R2&W

If you have an newer HST (manufactured or upgraded since Summer, 1990) which
contains the V.42/V.42bis enhancement, use the MODEMSET program to "pre-
condition" the modem as follows:

AT&F&C1&D2&B1&A0&M4&H1&R2&K3&W

NOTE: THIS STEP IS ESSENTIAL! The modem will NOT operate properly with
TBBS if you do not pre-condition it exactly as indicated!

                                  Notes

1. This setup allows full operation of the modem in all modes possi-
     ble.

2. Those who make any connections to, from, or within the United King-
dom, should add &G2 to the MODEMSET string above to add the UK
     Guard Tones.

3. Our testing indicates that these settings produce reliable opera-
tion in all modes at all baud rates with TBBS 2.1S, 2.1M[16] or
     2.1M[32].
