USING THE USROBOTICS HST DUAL STANDARD MODEM V.32BIS
----------------------------------------------------

THIS INFORMATION APPLIES ONLY TO TBBS VERSION 2.1

The USRobotics HST Dual Standard V.32bis modem is a high speed modem that is
compatible with USRobotics' own HST protocol as well as the international V.32
and V.32bis standards, offering data rates up to 14,400 bps, full duplex.
This modem is not listed in the TBBS 2.1 manual (since it is newer than the
release of TBBS), however it will work fully with TBBS Version 2.1 software.

To install the USRobotics HST Dual Standard V.32bis modem for full dual mode
operation with TBBS 2.1, use the following installation procedure:

                             Switch Settings

As the modem is taken out of the box from the factory, you MUST change the
settings of Switches 1 & 6. These are shipped in the DOWN position, and you
must set them to the UP position. This will make the switch settings match
those given in the TBBS 2.1 manual under the USR Courier HST 9600 modem
setting as follows:

  SW1 - UP                 SW2 - UP
  SW3 - DOWN               SW4 - UP
  SW5 - DOWN               SW6 - UP
  SW7 - UP                 SW8 - DOWN
  SW9 - DOWN               SW10 - UP

                    CEDIT Port/Modem Options Settings

In CEDIT use the following settings:

MODEM:
   Type = 4
   INIT = ATE0Q0X1V0M0S0=1S2=255S7=20S15=24B0

PORT:
   I/F = LOCK 19200
   RTS/CTS = Y
   The other 4 settings = N

                        MODEMSET Pre-Conditioning

Use the MODEMSET program to "pre-condition" the modem as follows:

     AT&F&C1&D2&B1&A0&M4&H1B0&R2S27=128&W

NOTE: THIS STEP IS ESSENTIAL! The modem will NOT operate properly with
TBBS if you do not pre-condition it exactly as indicated!

                                  Notes

1. This setup allows full operation of the modem in all modes possi-
     ble. Please note that this setup disables MNP Class 5 data
     compression due to its detrimental effect in typical BBS environ-
     ments. (V.42bis data compression is still enabled.)

2. Those who make any connections to, from, or within the United King-
     dom, should add &G2 to the MODEMSET string above to add the UK
     Guard Tones.

3. Our testing indicates that these settings produce reliable opera-
     tion in all modes at all baud rates with TBBS 2.1S, 2.1M[16] or
     2.1M[32].

4. Rackmount Courier HST Dual Standard V.32bis modems will report an
     error with the init string shown above. This is due to the modems
     not having an internal speaker, and reactly adversely to the
     command to turn the speaker off. Use this CEDIT init string
     instead of the one shown previously:

          INIT = ATE0Q0X1V0S0=1S2=255S7=20&B1S15=24B0

6. Rackmount Courier HST Dual Standard V.32bis modems don't have a
     specific "up" and "down" for the switch settings shown previously.
     For these modems, UP = OFF and DOWN = ON. Set the switches accor-
     ding to the direction screened on the switch bank itself.
