USING THE USROBOTICS HST DUAL STANDARD MODEM
--------------------------------------------

THIS INFORMATION APPLIES ONLY TO TBBS VERSION 2.1

The USRobotics HST Dual Standard modem is a high speed modem that is compatible
with USRobotics' own HST protocol as well as the internation-al V.32 standard.
This modem is not listed in the TBBS 2.1 manual (since it is newer than the
release of TBBS), however it will work fully with TBBS version 2.1 software.
This Tech Note is applicable to HST Dual Standard modems both with and without
the V.42/V.42bis enhancement.

To install the USRobotics HST Dual Standard modem for full dual mode operation
with TBBS 2.1, use the following installation procedure:

                             Switch Settings

As the modem is taken out of the box from the factory, you MUST change the
settings of Switches 1 & 6. These are shipped in the DOWN position, and you
must set them to the UP position. This will make the switch settings match
those given in the TBBS 2.1 manual under the USR Courier HST 9600 modem
setting as follows:

  SW1 - UP SW2 - UP
  SW3 - DOWN SW4 - UP
  SW5 - DOWN SW6 - UP
  SW7 - UP SW8 - DOWN
  SW9 - DOWN SW10 - UP

                    CEDIT Port/Modem Options Settings

In CEDIT use the following settings:

MODEM:
   Type = 4
   INIT = ATE0Q0X1V0M0S0=1S2=255S7=20S15=24B0

PORT:
I/F = LOCK 19200 NOTE: Press space bar to select I/F type!
   RTS/CTS = Y
   The other 4 settings = N

                        MODEMSET Pre-Conditioning

If you have an older HST Dual Standard (manufactured or upgraded prior
to Summer, 1990) which DOES NOT contain the V.42/V.42bis upgrade, use
the MODEMSET program to "pre-condition" the modem as follows:

AT&F&C1&D2&B1&A0&M4&H1B0&R2&W

If you have an newer HST Dual Standard (manufactured or upgraded since Summer,
1990) which contains the V.42/V.42bis enhancement, use the MODEMSET program to
"pre-condition" the modem as follows:

AT&F&C1&D2&B1&A0&M4&H1B0&R2&K3&W

NOTE: THIS STEP IS ESSENTIAL! The modem will NOT operate properly with
TBBS if you do not pre-condition it exactly as indicated!

                                  Notes

1. This setup allows full operation of the modem in all modes possi-
ble. It will connect to any V.32 modem in plain V.32 mode, in V.32
mode with MNP up to Level 5 compression, in HST mode, at 2400bps
with MNP up to Level 5 compression, or in 300/1200/2400 mode with
no MNP. V.42 error correction and V.42bis data compression will
also be fully functional on models which support it.

2. Those who make any connections to, from, or within the United King-
dom, should add &G2 to the MODEMSET string above to add the UK
     Guard Tones.

3. Our testing indicates that these settings produce reliable opera-
tion in all modes at all baud rates with TBBS 2.1S, 2.1M[16] or
     2.1M[32].

4. We have determined that later ROM revisions to the Courier HST Dual
Standard will not answer in V.32 mode unless the B0 parameter is
stored in NRAM (through MODEMSET pre-conditioning). Early eSoft
recommendations for this modem showed B0 in the CEDIT init string.
(This revision shows it redundantly in both locations.)

5. Rackmount Courier HST Dual Standard modems will report an error
with the init string shown above. This is due to the modems not
having an internal speaker, and reactly adversely to the command to
turn the speaker off. Use this CEDIT init string instead of the
     one shown previously:

          INIT = ATE0Q0X1V0S0=1S2=255S7=20&B1S15=24B0

6. Rackmount Courier HST Dual Standard modems don't have a specific
"up" and "down" for the switch settings shown previously. For
these modems, UP = OFF and DOWN = ON. Set the switches according
to the direction screened on the switch bank itself.
