CHANGING COLORS IN MESSAGE RETRIEVAL
------------------------------------

The RIP Kit as supplied by eSoft requires that the colors for the message
text in the message retrieval function be set to white characters on a blue
background. Although attractive for RIP users, the color settings, which are
stored in CEDIT (and in the language file in the case of RIP), apply to ANSI
users as well and may not be desirable for those users.

Note that the colors, whatever they are, must be the same for RIP users and
for ANSI users. You may need to adjust your color scheme for all users to
strike the best balance.

To change the message text colors for message reading, you must make three
changes. Please note that the color settings must be the same for all three
of these areas:

1) In CEDIT, select OTHER, then COLOR PREFERENCES. Set the colors for "Color
for Message body text" as desired.

2) Using EDLANG to edit the RIP.LNG file, go to record 118. Change the 7th
line of that record:

        !|1B0000020PVK060F00070F0100000001000000|1U051QHL780000<><>
                                ^^
Change only the two characters marked above. You need to change this color
setting to match the desired BACKGROUND color. Possible settings are:

        00 Black 04 Red
        01 Blue 05 Magenta
        02 Green 06 Brown
        03 Cyan 07 Light Gray

For example, to change to a black background, the changed line would look like
this:

        !|1B0000020PVK060F00070F0000000001000000|1U051QHL780000<><>

Note that there are only two characters which are different; change them in
place so you don't have to retype the entire sequence. Double-check your
work; even one character missing can cause the RIP display to be corrupted.

3) Using EDLANG to edit the RIP.LNG file, go to record 117. Change the 3rd
line of that record:

        ^[[1;37;44m^[[2J
           ^^^^^^^
These are ANSI escape sequences to change color attributes. These possible
color attributes are listed toward the end of Chapter 2 of your TBBS manual in
the section describing ANSI.

For example, you wanted to change to gray (low intensity white) characters on
a black background, the line would look like this:

        ^[[37;40m^[[2J

Or for yellow on black:

        ^[[1;33;40m^[[2J

Once these changes are made, both RIP and ANSI users will be using the color
settings you designated.
