REGULATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~
1.   All the manuscript holdings of the National Library of Scotland and
     certain categories of printed books, including those that are old,
     rare, fine, or fragile (collectively referred to as 'rare books')
     must be read in the South Reading Room. Our aim is to preserve
     these special items for the future and, in making them available
     for the present, the care and co-operation of readers is
     particularly requested.
2.   The South Reading Room is open from 09.30 to 20.30 on Monday,
     Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10.00 to 20.30 on Wednesday, and
     09.30 to 13.00 on Saturday. To enable records to be checked and
     manuscripts and rare books to be securely stored away, readers are
     asked to hand their books in promptly, not later than twenty
     minutes before closure.
3.   Readers using the South Reading Room require a special South
     Reading Room ticket which will be issued by the invigilator on
     production of a valid Main Reading Room ticket.
4.   Manuscripts and rare books must not be taken out of the South
     Reading Room.
5.   The risk of damage from ink, especially ball-point ink, is great
     and not reversible. To avoid such damage PENCILS ONLY may be used
     in the South Reading Room for writing. Personal computers, battery-
     operated only, provided that they are reasonably silent, may be
     used at the discretion of the invigilator.
6.   Working papers, especially those which are being written on, should
     not be placed on top of manuscripts or books.
7.   To minimize damage to bindings, manuscripts should whenever
     practicable be read on the lecterns or foam supports provided.
     Perspex clips to hold volumes open are available.
8.   No more than three items at a time will be issued to a reader,
     although more may be ordered.  Loose documents are easily
     disarranged. One file only of such documents will therefore he
     issued to a reader at any one time, and the order within the file
     should not be disturbed.
9.   Any defect or damage noticed should be reported to the invigilator.
10.  Umbrellas, wet coats, brief-cases, hold-alls, etc., are not allowed
