MAJOR LEAGUE MARXISM

*Professional sports teams won't play without your tax money*
Strange omens of doom appear before Houston's professional sports
fans these days.
Houston's embattled NFL franchise owner, Bud Adams, can't make top
money playing his Oilers team in the Astrodome -- where he is just
another stadium tenant.
So Adams wants to move the team away to a place where he'll become
the PRIMARY tenant, with total control of a government-owned stadium
in Tennessee.
It's appropriate that, out of Houston's several major league sports
franchises, this unhappy news should come first from the Oilers camp.
This NFL franchise has a history of evil omens.
Back some years, Dale Robertson, then a Houston Post writer but now
with the Chronicle, was beaten like cake batter by then-Oilers
quarterback Dan Pastorini.
Later, on a road-trip, Robertson fled in utter terror while Pastorini
chased him from the team's hotel. Robertson still continues to talk
about the event when prompted on sports talk shows. And he exhibits a
bizarre sense of pride that he ran like a cowardly dog through city
streets with Pastorini in pursuit.
Later, Bud Adams installed a relatively untried NFL Head Coach that
he thought he could control -- Bum Phillips. This man eventually
became the most popular Oilers coach ever.
However, Phillips continually made strange personnel decisions,
like cutting in training camp a wide receiver who Phillips
insisted would not keep his eye on a ball in flight.
It didn't matter to Phillips that the wide receiver always caught the
ball.
This wide receiver made a career with the Seattle Seahawks and then
was named to Pro Football's Hall of Fame. His name? Steve Largent.
Under Phillips, as under every Oilers head coach -- the dream of a
Super Bowl remained out of reach. The most prolific product of the
team has been excuses.
Adams fired Phillips in favor of a much worse series of coaches. He
installed as his right-hand-man a general manager named Ladd Herzeg, a
Certified Public Accountant.
This man who sat at the right hand of Bud Adams immediately took up a
raging habit of drinking alcohol. He began engaging in unprotected sex
with a flight attendant from Richmond, Texas and she gave birth to a
daughter.
Herzeg accompanied the team to a game in Buffalo, New York. He
went down to a Saturday night wedding reception held at the team's
hotel. He hiked down his sweatpants and exposed to the wedding
celebrants a very fat and pimply butt. He was arrested, then freed.
Back in Houston, it had been a long time since football fans had
witnessed an Oilers representative give a major league butt-kicking to
a newspaper reporter. Ladd Herzeg, with the inspiration of alcoholism,
would not disappoint the fans any longer.
Houston radio sports commentator Barry Warner arranged a luncheon,
hosting both Herzeg and Chronicle writer Fran Blinebury. It was
supposed to be a friendship-making, peacemaking lunch. Unfortunately,
Warner sought to seal the new friendship with an alcoholic beverage,
which had an effect like throwing gallons of high-octane gasoline on
Herzeg's alcoholic pilot light. Herzeg grabbed Blinebury and pummeled
him brutally, beating him like a bad dog before the amazed noontime crowd.
The Chronicle, in a seeming act of support for the Oilers, suspended
Blinebury from his job for a short period of time. Herzeg's mistress
successfully sued for child support. Herzeg fled to Europe
permanently.
In what probably will become the horrible moment of climax in the
Oilers' history in Houston, defensive player Jeff Alm crashed his car
on 610 Loop at the Southwest Freeway early one morning before dawn.
Rumors still run rampant about what Alm could have been doing with his
male passenger just before the crash.
What is most certain is that upon impact with a guard rail, the
passenger flew out of the car to his death. He may or may not have
carried something of Alm's with him as he flew to his death. We have
only rumors to turn to in that regard.
Alm, who traveled with a pistol-grip shotgun that he used to threaten
football fans while driving along the Richmond Strip, called 911 on
his cellular phone while firing the gun. He hit himself fatally with
one of the shots.
With just these few examples of all the honor and glory the Oilers
have brought upon Houston in return for taxpayer support, we turn our
attention to Nashville, Tennessee, where Bud Adams wishes to become
PRIMARY tenant of a government-supported stadium.
There in Tennessee, when anyone wants to stage a monster truck rally
or a giant rock concert filled with noise and illicit drugs -- they
would have to request audience with Bud Adams, gaze upon his grotesque
visage and smell whatever odors emanate from his 30-year-old toupee.
At the Astrodome, monster truck and rock promoters have to visit the
court of Drayton McLane, who continues paying on the sweetheart
99-year lease originally granted to the late Houston-legend Judge Roy
Hofheinz. McLane pays somewhere around $350,000 to control all events
at the Astrodome, Astrohall and Astro Arena.
He charges the University of Houston $250,000 to play football there,
charges something for Harry Stevens to sell beer and hot dogs, charges
the rodeo, pays the lights and baseball players -- added and
subtracted, it would be hard not to make money when you control the
Harris County Domed Stadium.
That's why the dream of every professional, major league sports owner
isn't to play in the championship game, but is to control a large
arena built and constantly renovated by a group of taxpayers.
Preferably a large, domed stadium.
On August 27, the Houston Chronicle's 'Outlook' section lay down some
ink for City Councilman John Kelley, whose district includes Bud
Adams' home neighborhood of River Oaks.
Kelley's solution: have the Oilers play at Rice Stadium, which has
almost no parking available. Renovate Rice with luxury boxes, "Perhaps
the corporate community would ante up for luxury boxes should we get
the Super Bowl."
If the corporate community doesn't ante up enough -- or if Bud Adams
would insist on luxury boxes even without the Super Bowl. Who would
pay to build them?
It would take more than the 40,000-head of hard-core football fans
who follow the Oilers. Might the taxpayers be called upon to renovate
Rice Stadium just a little bit? And build and maintain a large,
multi-level satellite parking lot?
Councilman Kelley means well, but he's not paying attention. Like
most NFL owners, Bud Adams wants a $200 million-or-so domed stadium.
He wants the government to build, maintain, renovate and guarantee a
sell-out for every game.
If residents of the City of Houston, including the Oilers' 40,000
faithful fans, have the courage God gave a garden slug, they'll say
no. And since rumors continue spreading that both the Rockets and
Astros have staged at least informal discussions with other
communities about moving out -- they must applaud each and every team
as they pack up and leave town.
Because major league sports today do not support the American system
of free enterprise. They are Marxist institutions, which drain
with vampiric intensity the economic lifeblood of the communities they
pretend to serve. Major league sports franchises demand and get taxes
raised to support their poor excuses for businesses. These taxes are
forcibly extracted from people under penalty of property-confiscation
and even imprisonment.
When major league sports franchises cannot get communities to raise
taxes, they force politicians to raise bonded indebtedness instead.
Many citizens do not believe government bonds cost them anything,
because they mortgage the future of their communities.
In the case of the Oilers, Bud Adams once threatened to move the team
to Jacksonville. So Harris County increased bonded indebtedness to
renovate the Astrodome and keep the team here. If Bud Adams moves
tomorrow, Houston-Harris County citizens must continue to pay a total
of $108 million to retire these bonds.
Houston and Harris County business must pay increasing amounts of
money on taxes and bonds to support major league sports teams. This
money must go to taxation and sports, rather than to increase wages
and create more jobs and business opportunities.
For Houston and Harris County residents who think football, baseball
and basketball are more important to them than increased wages and
better jobs -- let these people form gypsy-like caravans and follow
these teams to their new arenas, like drug addicts used to follow the
Grateful Dead band.
But before the Oilers move, would someone with the team please beat
up just one more newspaper reporter? It certainly wouldn't hurt Ed
Fowler's looks any.

JAYNE LOADER'S PUBLIC SHELTER IS NOW AVAILABLE

EJL Productions is pleased to announce that JAYNE LOADER'S PUBLIC
SHELTER, a CD-ROM inspired by her classic film THE ATOMIC CAFE, is now
available in a signed, limited edition (Windows version only).
PUBLIC SHELTER contains 40 minutes of video--much of it unseen since
the 1950s--400 photographs, 18 original songs, 12 hours of audio, and
1400 text files (a total of 15 meg of fully searchable text) all
pertaining to atomic weapons and energy, from the Trinity Test to the
present.
Most of the documents in PUBLIC SHELTER are original artifacts, many
of them recently declassified by the United States government. Some
of the most shocking deal with nuclear accidents and waste, atomic
testing, and government-sponsored radiation experiments on human
beings.
PUBLIC SHELTER extends the "found footage" concept to the CD-ROM
format. There is no top-down interface and no "script of God" telling
the user what to think or how the information in the disc should be
experienced or organized. All political points--and there are
many--are made through editing and juxtaposition.
The organizational metaphor of PUBLIC SHELTER is the World Wide
Web--not the Web as it is now, but the Web as it will be in the
future, when the images, sounds, and videos load and play instantly.
Some Homepages are real places (Los Alamos, the Department of Energy).
Others are events (World War II) or concepts (Peace). Each of the 20
Homepages has LINX to other related Homepages. Each is supplemented
by a Browser, where one can obtain additional information. Formally
unique and content-rich, PUBLIC SHELTER is one of the first attempts
made by an independent filmmaker to extend the art of documentary to
the CD-ROM format.
To order this signed, limited edition of PUBLIC SHELTER by mail, send
a check or money order for $79.95 to: EJL Productions LLC, 906 W.

LIVERMORE RESEARCHERS BELIEVE JUPITER HAS NO
BOUNDARY BETWEEN MANTLE AND METALLIC CORE

By Stephen Wampler, LLNL PAO

LIVERMORE, Calif.--New evidence developed by Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory researchers suggests there is no boundary
between Jupiter's molecular mantle and its metallic core.
This is one of the surprising possibilities outlined by Livermore
physicist Bill Nellis and two Livermore co-authors, Neil Holmes and
Marvin Ross, in an article entitled "Temperature Measurements of Shock-
Compressed Liquid Hydrogen: Implications for the Interior of Jupiter,"
published today in Science magazine. Jupiter is 90 percent hydrogen.
The findings of this team on the behavior of compressed hydrogen
go well beyond the nature of the Jovian planet and have positive
implications for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which will focus its
192 laser beams on hydrogen targets, as well as on nuclear weapons
programs.
To study hydrogen under conditions similar to Jupiter, the
Laboratory's two-stage light-gas gun was used to generate high pressures
and temperatures by slamming liquid-deuterium sample holders with
tantalum or aluminum projectiles accelerated to 7 km per second, or
16,000 mph.
"The only way on Earth you can achieve both the high
temperatures and high pressures inside Jupiter is by shock
compression," Nellis says. "We're the only group in the world doing this
kind of experiment.
"This requires not only the Laboratory's experimental facilities but
also its computational capability. No one else can do these experiments
and their modeling," Nellis added.
To achieve sufficiently accurate results, Neil Holmes had to develop
sophisticated optical methods for measuring shock temperatures using a
fiber-optic bundle. The temperatures are determined from light emitted
from shock-compressed hydrogen.
What Nellis' team found was that at the highest pressures, the
measured temperatures were "substantially lower than predicted" by
conventional models. These lower temperatures are caused by the partial
and continuous dissociation - the breaking apart of molecules - of
molecular hydrogen (H2) into monatomic hydrogen (H) above a certain
pressure level (200 kilobar, or 3 million pounds per square inch). The
process of dissociation absorbs energy bringing down temperatures.
According to the team's findings, Jupiter's molecular envelope is
cooler and has much less temperature variation than previously believed.
The continuous dissociative phase transition suggests there is no sharp
change at what astronomers now commonly believe is a distinct core-
mantle boundary. The analog on Earth is the distinct boundary between
the rocky mantle and the iron core.
Jupiter is of great interest to astronomers because the interior
remains something of a mystery and because "almost all the planetary
mass in the solar system is in Jupiter." There are 330 Earth masses in
the Jovian planet.
These findings also apply to that other hydrogen-rich planet,
Saturn, but the focus is on Jupiter because it is "by far the largest
planet" and "Jupiter is a simpler system to model."
Current models of Jupiter are based on gravitational field data
gleaned by NASA space probes, but the findings of Nellis' team challenge
some of the assumptions on which those models are constructed.
"The theory we used is phenomenological and based on previous
results. These new experiments need a modern theory to take full
advantage of what we've found."
Nellis sees the publication of this article as the opening salvo in a
new line of inquiry in the ongoing debate over the nature of the Jovian
interior.
"I believe what we are saying is correct, but I am not sure that
everything we are saying is right. A part of the idea of this paper is to
stimulate discussion and new research."
However, their findings will lead to new databases affecting
weapons and laser fusion programs, both of which use isotopes of
hydrogen. Laser fusion scientists use the compressibility of hydrogen to
tune laser pulses to obtain a maximum energy yield. A better
understanding of the pressure/temperature relationship in hydrogen
could lead to higher fusion-energy yields.
"The things we're finding are helping them enhance the fusion
processes," Nellis says.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory conducts research
important to national goals. Current research programs include national
defense, energy, biomedicine and the environment. The Laboratory also
has a long-standing commitment to protect the environment, enhance
the nation's economic competitiveness and support education.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES OF THE FUTURE IN THE LAB TODAY

By Gordon Yano, LLNL PAO

LIVERMORE, Calif. - What's on the horizon in the field of medical
technology?
How about "welding" rather than stitching tissue together? How
about diagnosing medical conditions by more accurately reading blood gases
through the skin? How about improved optical technology to allow surgeons
to see better into patients' hands during arthroscopic surgery for Carpal
Tunnel problems?
All of these advances are being researched at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory today. The Lab has signed agreements with three private
medical technology firms to work together to perfect each of the
technologies and help move them from the lab to medical offices. (See
attached media advisory for information on press access to Friday's Lab
ceremony announcing these projects.)

Tissue Welding

Current methods for binding tissue together are stitching and stapling.
While functional, both can allow puckering around the wound and seepage of
fluids. And for some difficult-to-get-at locations, stitching or stapling is
just not possible. A technique for actually welding tissue together would be
faster, could be used in areas difficult to reach, would make for better
joints and speed healing, and decrease risk of complications. Such a new
technique is the goal of a recently signed, $3.22 million Collaborative
Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Livermore and
Conversion Energy Enterprises of Spring Valley, NY.
CEE is considered a pioneer in the field of tissue welding. The Lab
will lend to the project its expertise in lasers, computers, optics and
microtool development. Together the parties hope to develop a prototype
automatic welding system within a couple of years.

Blood Gas Monitoring

A quick, easy, non-invasive way to monitor blood for substances such as
oxygen, carbon dioxide, anesthesia or alcohol could save billions of dollars
in health care costs.
A $1.8 million collaborative research agreement between Lawrence
Livermore and Novametrix Medical Systems, Inc. of Wallingford, Conn.,
seeks to develop a way to more accurately use light projected through skin
to read blood gases.
Lab expertise in optics, fiber optics and signal processing will be
combined with Novametrix's experience in developing blood gas monitoring
instruments.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery

So far, arthroscopic surgery to correct hand problems due to
repetitive stress has been less than successful. A problem with today's
technology is that the surgeon cannot get a good view of the interior of the
hand.
Lawrence Livermore is teaming with Envision Medical Corp. to
develop an improved endoscopic imaging system that uses better optics and
computer imaging. Envision is a Santa Barbara manufacturer of medical video
camera systems used in minimally invasive surgery.
The $1.3 million CRADA will make use of the Lab's knowledge of
optics, sensors, image processing and microtools to improve surgical
success, and to reduce both post-operative pain and the current $10 to $15
billion price tag for treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

National Problems

The Lab recently formed its Center for Health Care Technologies to
promote partnerships with industry and government. From an improved
mammography system to microtools for neurosurgery, the Center is working
on some of the most pressing problems in health care today. The goal is to
improve health care and reduce the nation's health care bill - a staggering
$1 trillion last year.
"Improving the quality of health care is a national problem, and so is
the high cost," said Pat Fitch, director of the Lab's Center for Health Care
Technologies.
"A national laboratory such as Lawrence Livermore, with its staff of
diversified scientists and technicians, is ideally prepared to help tackle
those problems through improved technology," he said.

DRUMMING UP BUSINESS

By Gary Kliewer, LANL PAO

Chemicals, radioactive materials and wastes of all types are
stored in large drums. Flammable or explosive gases sometimes
build up in these containers. Los Alamos National Laboratory
has developed a self-contained, portable system that
automatically moves a drum into a containment vessel resistant
to explosion, seals off the vessel, and penetrates the drum lid.
Gases in the drum are sampled and analyzed for hydrogen and
volatile organic compounds. The drum vent system can also
backfill the vessel with nitrogen to reduce flammable gas
concentrations. Since the unit is automated, workers are safely
away from the device when the drum lid is pierced. The drum
vent system can process up to four drums per hour.

PASS THE SALT, PLEASE

By Jim Danneskiold, LANL PAO

In a new system aimed at reducing the volume of radioactive
waste at Los Alamos National Laboratory and other sites,
plutonium-contaminated salts are loaded into a crucible and
heated to 1,000 degrees Celsius, or more than 1,800 degrees
Fahrenheit, under vacuum. The contaminated salts vaporize
inside an evaporator and migrate into a condenser chamber,
leaving plutonium-oxide powder in the crucible. The vacuum
distillation operation has decontaminated salts containing 51
percent plutonium by weight to levels of parts per million. Most
bulk residues are converted into low-level wastes-less than 100
billionths of a curie of radioactivity per gram-for which
repositories are available. The process cuts transuranic salt waste
volumes by 90 percent and could save considerable money at
Department of Energy facilities if substituted for current aqueous
separation technologies.

ARCHITECT-ENGINEER FIRM SELECTED FOR MAIN NATIONAL IGNITION FACILITY BUILDING

By Craig Savoye, LLNL PAO

LIVERMORE, Calif. - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Associate Director for Lasers E. Michael Campbell announces the
selection of Ralph M. Parsons Company as architect-engineer for the
main Laser & Target Area Building (LTAB) in the proposed National
Ignition Facility complex.
The Laboratory will enter into negotiations with Parsons, which
should result in the award of a sub-contract for the LTAB architect-
engineer. No contract with the architect-engineer will be let until the
project has been approved and funded by Congress.
"The selection of an architect-engineer is the first formal
procurement action that starts our partnering with industry," said
Campbell. "We are very pleased the Ralph M. Parsons Company will be
with us as we start this journey toward the realization of the NIF. With
proven large facility design experience, the Parsons Company is
eminently qualified to assume the role of A-E."
The flagship company of the Parsons Corporation, Ralph M.
Parsons Company is headquartered in Pasadena, Calif. The firm is
noted for its excellence in design of unique and first-of-its-kind R&D
facilities, as well as very large conventional construction projects.
These range from a laser facility for TRW corporation in southern
California to an entire city in Saudi Arabia. [Editors: A corporate
profile of the Parsons company is available on request.]
The NIF will be housed in a complex of structures. LTAB will be,
by far, the largest structure, and it is this building for which Parsons
has been selected A-E. In addition, Albert C. Martin & Associates has
been selected as the A-E for the smaller Optical Assembly Building.
The process for selecting an architect-engineer began in January
1995. A rigorous evaluation criteria was established that included
experience in such areas as constructing clean rooms, precision
thermal control and vibration isolation of large buildings. A multi-lab
selection committee, including representatives from Sandia National
Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory & Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory, participated in the selection. The next major
procurement milestone will be the selection of the construction
manager.
Livermore is the preferred Department of Energy site for
construction of the giant laser, but the building design will not
preclude other sites.

LAB DOING SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL

LIVERMORE, Calif. - There are 31 oil platforms off the coast of
California. Most of these structures date back to the 1960s and 70s -
before earthquake design methods and standards were established for
the offshore oil industry.
Given the age of the older platforms and the state's active
seismic history, a project has been launched to re-evaluate seismic
hazards to offshore platforms. The California State Lands Commission
and the U.S. Minerals Management Service - the agencies with
jurisdiction for offshore areas - have asked Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory to conduct an initial earthquake hazard analysis of
the eastern portion of the Santa Barbara Channel, a region of high
seismicity containing 17 oil platforms.
Scientists and engineers from the Lab's Geologic & Atmospheric
Hazards Program will determine what earthquake faults could affect
the Channel region and what earthquake forces might be expected in
the area. While detailed seismic hazard analyses already exist for
onshore areas, there are currently no comparable analyses for offshore
regions, such as the Santa Barbara Channel.
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week at Stanford University,
the Lab and the U.S. Minerals Management Service are hosting a
workshop for seismic experts from the oil industry, government,
academia and the private sector. Participants will share current
scientific understanding of the seismic activity of the Santa Barbara
area.
By the end of this year, Lab scientists should finish gathering
information on faults in the Santa Barbara Channel area and on the
seismic forces those faults could unleash. Next year, researchers will
refine the data and develop a seismic hazards map of the region.
The Lab's Geologic & Atmospheric Hazards Program has
performed seismic hazard analyses for the past 25 years. The group
has analyzed U.S. Department of Energy facilities, as well as many
nuclear power plants in the western U.S. Members of the program
journeyed to Kobe earlier this year to study the effects of the
devastating earthquake on that city's structures.
"We helped pioneer the analysis of seismic hazards through our
years of service to other federal agencies," said Bob Murray, head of
the Geologic & Atmospheric Hazards Program. "This work is an
extension of that service."

A MULTICHIP TIP

By John Gustafson, LANL PAO

Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers, working with
Texas Instruments of Dallas, have developed a prototype
electronic module that improves significantly on the amount of
miniaturized circuitry packed into a single package and its
performance. An offshoot of work Los Alamos performed for
the Superconducting Supercollider project - where processing a
large number of signals at high speed was critical - the "High-
Density Interconnect" multichip module achieves twice the
density of circuit interconnections found in other comparable
technology. The HDI module demonstrates better performance,
lower power consumption and higher reliability than existing
systems, making it ideal for applications in space systems.

WORTH DYING FOR

By Gary Kliewer, LANL PAO

Fluorescent dyes are applied as tags for chromosomes studied
with flow cytometers, devices that use lasers to sort large
volumes of cells or chromosomes for research and clinical tests.
Conventional cytometry requires two dyes activated at different
wavelengths to identify and sort chromosomes. Los Alamos
National Laboratory researchers have patented a technique using
a single, new-generation fluorescent dye, excited by lasers first at
an ultraviolet wavelength then again in the visible light range.
Chromosomes are identified by intensity relationships between
the first and second fluorescence emissions. The researchers
think applications of the new-generation fluorescent dyes are
worth exploring because not only do the dyes work with both
DNA and RNA, but they are also much brighter, potentially
making analysis of smaller chromosomes possible.

AUTOMOTIVE-SCALE FUEL CELL UNDERGOES TESTING

By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PAO

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., August 2, 1995 - Researchers are speeding ahead in the
race to produce an electric car as testing begins on an automotive-scale
fuel cell - a result of a collaborative research project at Los Alamos
National Laboratory.
Fuel cells, devices that convert chemical energy to electrical energy
without combustion, have been fairly common in the space program, but have
not been able to provide sufficient sustained power at a reasonable cost and
size for use in the automotive industry, until now.
Researchers at Los Alamos have started testing an automotive-scale fuel
cell as part of the second phase of a joint project with General Motors, Los
Alamos and the Department of Energy.
DOE recently awarded a $35 million contract to the government/industry team
to complete the project's second phase, a 30-month effort. Phase one of the
project recently was completed at Los Alamos with the development of a
10-kilowatt gross output engine. An electric vehicle's engine will require
between 30 and 50 kilowatts to perform as well as today's gas-powered
automobiles.
To reach the wattage goal, project researchers are designing an
electrochemical engine that runs on stacks of proton-exchange membrane fuel
cells and the liquid fuel methanol. An onboard fuel processor converts the
methanol into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The fuel cell electrochemically
combines the hydrogen with oxygen from outside air to produce direct current
electricity. The electricity, in turn, powers the traction motors that turn
the car's wheels.
Another research milestone in the program is a recently developed fuel
processor that promises to respond quickly to changing fuel demands during
acceleration and hill climbing and minimizes the need for necessary battery
backup to accommodate startup. Previous fuel processors, a vital part of
the electrochemical engine, have been slow to start and slow in adjusting
the output to meet power demands.

LAB RADAR TECHNOLOGY CROSSES $1 MILLION MARK IN
ROYALTIES, LICENSE FEES; TRADE SHOW SET FOR BUSINESSES

By Stephen Wampler, LLNL PAO

LIVERMORE, Calif. - A license agreement with a Pennsylvania
corporation has vaulted Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's new
radar technology past the $1 million mark in royalties and license
fees.
This week, Teleflex Inc. of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., became the
tenth company to license the Lab's micropower impulse radar, or
MIR, developed by electronics engineer Tom McEwan.
"I believe the Livermore radar is the fastest growing technology
license in the entire federal laboratory system," stated Michael Odza,
publisher of Technology Access Report, an industry newsletter.
Developed in the Lab's Laser Fusion Program, the radar has been
used on the Nova laser to measure the balance and power output of the
laser's 10 beams, as well as to make other scientific measurements.
Teleflex plans to construct a new manufacturing facility in
Florida, partly to turn out products based on the Lab's radar
technology, said Tim Champion, the firm's director of business
development.
A Fortune 500 company, Teleflex is listed on the New York
Stock Exchange and has about 9,000 employees. The firm specializes
in four industries-aerospace, marine, automotive and medical.
During the past 16 months, interest has continued to mount
about the radar technology-so much so that this Friday the
Department of Energy lab will stage its first trade show to inform
businesses about the radar.
Called the MIR Technology Exhibition, the radar forum is
expected to attract at least 90 business representatives from 56
companies around the U.S. and several foreign nations, said MIR
project administrator Shari Perry.
"We've had to turn people away because of space limitations and
we're already planning to hold another trade show in October," Perry
noted.
Business representatives are expected from companies based in
California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan,
and other states, as well as three other nations-Norway, Canada and
Brazil.
All companies that license the radar technology are required to
have their products substantially manufactured in the U.S., creating
jobs here.
"We decided to adopt the trade show approach for informing
companies about the radar technology because we had so many
requests from people for visits to the Laboratory," Perry explained.
Since each visit normally takes four hours, visits would have had
to have been scheduled for the next year, Perry added, noting the
trade shows will allow many businesses to be accommodated in a short
time.
Friday's trade show, which is open only to the businesses that
have signed up and paid registration fees, will be held at the
Pleasanton Hilton from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The trade show will have eight booths providing information
about different applications of the technology -- including motion
sensors, fluid-level sensing, medical and imaging.
As a part of the exhibition, MIR inventor Tom McEwan will
make a presentation on the versatile technology that has attracted
more than 2,700 calls from businesses and individuals over the past
16 months.
In 1994 two California companies received licenses for the radar
technology-Amerigon Inc. of Monrovia, for automotive safety
applications; and Zircon Corp. of Campbell, for electronic hand tool
uses.
Since April, another eight companies have received non-
exclusive licenses for different applications of the radar technology.
Most of these companies have chosen not to disclose their
names for proprietary reasons until their products are ready for the
market.
One company that recently received a radar license is Titan
Technologies, a publicly traded company listed on the Vancouver
stock exchange in Canada.
Titan Technologies is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta and
has manufacturing facilities for producing fluid measurement
equipment in North Dakota and Canada, said John Grimes, Titan's
vice-president.
Planned products using the radar include fluid-level sensors to
measure and control levels in petroleum and petro chemical tanks,
plus for different industries such as the food industry to measure
vinegar, oils or any liquid, solid or granular based products.
About 75 percent of Titan's radar product manufacturing is
expected to be done in the U.S., with the remainder in Canada,
Grimes said. Because of the radar technology, the firm expects to add
as many as 50 employees initially, mainly in North Dakota, Grimes
stated.
The firm's measurement systems also will be used in the
trucking industry to measure and control fluids such as gasoline,
diesel fuel and almost any other product transported.
Titan's first radar sensor prototypes are expected to be ready in
August, and its initial product should hit the market before the end of
the year, Grimes said.
Titan is developing other radar-based products related to its
business and they should be ready for the market as early as the first
three months of 1996, Grimes said.
The new radar sensors will be much smaller, about the size of a
softball, compared with the firm's current units that are closer to the
size of a crate of apples, Grimes said.
Other advantages of the radar, he explained, are that it will have
a substantially lower cost for customers, higher accuracy, better
reliability and lower installation costs.
"I believe the radar technology will dramatically change the
fluid-level sensing industry," Grimes said.

CONNECT! Magazine: DIALING ON DOWN THE ROAD
ij

 Hello?
 Hello?
 Is anybody there?
 Is anybody...

Oh wonderful -- You're reading this column! That means not everyone
tried to install Windows 95! Maybe others have been saved from one of
those bugs or a terrible computer virus set off by that new Windows
from Bill 'Gates of Hell'!
After you read this column, please go back into cyberspace and try to
find others who aren't crippled by the that horrible new Windows
release. We'll start a brave new cyberworld, free of the killer
computer viruses and Windows bugs!
The first place I hope you'll look for signs of cyber-life is Set
Free! BBS at 324-4421. Actually, Set Free's Sysop, Duane Bristow, who
is assisted by wife Diane, has nothing to do pro or con with
Microsoft, Windows, or anything like that. He's just a great guy with
a supportive spouse and a growing BBS that you'll probably love joining.
From the beginning, Bristow's is a Christian bulletin board. He
himself is associate pastor of Church On The Lake in Huffman, Texas.
He also maintains a full-time prison ministry.
Bristow is a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1964-1968, with two
tours of duty in Vietnam -- one on the U.S.S. Hornet (now
decommissioned) and the other on the U.S.S. Ranger.
So besides the current Christian and General Discussion areas of Set
Free, Bristow was in the process, as CONNECT! magazine went to
cyber-press, of setting up VetLink on the board.
As if that didn't pose enough of a challenge, Duane also offers
several game doors on his BBS, including the popular BBS Chess. So if
you're an avid player, or just a glutton for punishment like I am,
join a game or start your own.
For people who like networks and messages, this maximum-14,400 baud
BBS offers Fidonet Netmail, several echoes, and FamilyNet in addition
to the other areas and conferences.
Just scanning for areas applying to Christian computer fans, there
are 'Computers for Christ' and 'Computers in the Church', just to
mention two.
The file areas nicely suit the various interests of the board,
including several spots focused on specific Christian ministries,
discussion groups and even BBS Chess.
But the Number 1 priority of the Bristows' BBS endeavor is to
establish a network of chaplains, prison ministers, biker ministers,
street ministers and others in what Duane calls 'Front Line'
ministries.
"These are the men and women who have dedicated their lives to going
into the highways and hedges to reach the lost," he says.
"Maybe you're a chaplain in need of volunteers and don't know anyone
in your area. Someone on the board may know just the person you're
looking for. Maybe you're looking for a team to come in and hold a
prisonwide meeting for two or three days. Someone on the board will
know who to contact!"

Chuck Wharton will review a different Houston BBS system or other
electronic phenomenon here each month. Chisel-head.
If you have comments, leave email for Charles Wharton on THE ATOMIC CAFE, or

CALLING A BBS AND YOU CAN'T GET AN ANSWER? Many System Operators will take
their BBS down during thunderstorm activity. We encourage SysOps to take
their phone line "off hook" to busy the line out during these periods of non-
service. Some do, some don't. If you can't get through, try again later.

If you are the SysOp of a BBS and wish to have your system listed in
Houston's largest and most accurate BBS list, call THE ATOMIC CAFE BBS at 713-
530-8875. Log on under your real name, and answer the registration informat-
ion. Then, from the top level menu, select <H>. You will then be at the
Houston Area 713/281 BBS List (c) Center. Select <4> to add a system or to
change your system. Select <5> to remove your system from the list. In
either case, you will be asked to answer a questionnaire for EACH line you
wish to list.
The service is FREE. We reserve the right to refuse to list any system that
we feel may be inappropriate to list.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind ...

*FidoNet BBS systems dedicate one hour a day to mail exchange. That hour is
normally from 4-5 a.m. central time, or 3-4 a.m. central daylight time. Most
FidoNet nodes will not accept a call from a human user during that time, but
does allow other computers on the network to connect to exchange mail.

*Numbers that ring constantly over a period of a few days are removed from the
list due to the fact that the system may have been de-commissioned and that
number may now be a voice line. We cannot take a chance on that.

*If you encounter a human voice on a line listed herein as a BBS, please let
us know. Send the number and the name of the system to: Houston Area 713/281

*There is no charge for accessing The Atomic Cafe to do this. We do very much
appreciate your assistance in keeping the Houston Area 713/281 BBS List (c) up
to date and as accurate as possible.

*Houston is a VERY VOLATILE BBS market. Systems up one day may be down for
good on the next. For every system to goes down, there are usually 2 or 3 to
replace it. Therefore, it is vital that you always do your BBS dialing from a
RECENT list.
