SANCTUM'S INTERNET GUIDE - INTERNET INFORMATION FOR 1995 and BEYOND

                            MAY 1995

If you are looking for Internet Email and newsgroups, many of the BBS's
in this listing are now offering you an Internet address, and access to
a limited number of all available Internet/UUCP newgroups.

However, to use the tools of the Internet, such as Archie, WAIS, Gopher
and Mosaic; you will need a direct connect service to the Internet.
This requires a UNIX computer and expensive leased line from the phone
company, or your personal access to a mainframe which has both above items.
Many services have popped up local to Dallas/Fort Worth to provide you
personal access through their mainframe and lines. Many of these have bought
their own equipment, some use the mainframes of local universities and
  corporations.

If you run a BBS and are looking for a Internet feed, please note:
Most local Internet providers DO NOT offer Email and newsgroups to
BBS's (or SIMPLE UUCP account with MX forwarding). We feel that most
internet providers are shooting themselves in the foot by refusing to
provide a dial-up UUCP service, because it is still extremely costly
for the average BBS operator to buy additional software to allow a
bbs to handle FTP, TELNET, WEB home pages - plus the major expense
of the required leased-line from the phone company. The SLIP/PPP
accounts that all providers offer are useless to most bbs Sysops.

The following is a list of LOCAL D/FW Internet providers:

Name Voice # Modem # info@ address Comments

---------------------- UUCP providers for D/FW BBS Sysops -----------------

While Second Sanctum (home of this list) has used several of the local
service providers - we would like to hear YOUR experience with YOUR
Internet vendors: good or bad. Let others know about the Internet
vendors and services you have tried in D/FW by sending your input
  to mark.robbins@ssanctum.com

Lonestar.org - Extremely freindly helpful service for novices to UUCP.
100% free of charge, therefore you may dial a week before
getting through. Email and newsgroups takes a great deal
more time to send and receive than other vendors. This
system taps into a local Unversity Mainframe. If speed
and having a domain address is not important to you, this
is a great place to start.

Texas Metronet - Also taps from same school mainframe but charges for it,
and increase costs at a whim. Customer service is the key to
Internet vendors and TXMET has the WORST customer service of
anyone in the metroplex. Personal meetings with their staff
are held at Burger King/Denny's as they have no real office
or other signs of organization. Major defect is attitude,
particularly from wife Lynda who runs accounting. Offers
monthly rates for UUCP that edge up the scale all the time.

Unicomp.net - Extremely helpful customer service, perhaps the best PR and
customer service of all local Internet feeds. Have their
own mainframe and really bend over backwards to help novices.
HOURLY rates for UUCP Email/newsgroups which can be extremely
pricey when you shop around. These guys seem to still be
learning the ropes dealing with all technical aspects of
accounts from UUCP to SLIP/PPP. Lack of technical ability
is offset by extremely customer-oriented service at this time.
Hourly connect rates are extremely ineffective for the BBS
operator needing UUCP Email and newsgroups and are quite
cost-prohibitive - what costs $20 a month at most vendors
will cost you hundreds a month from Unicomp.

CRL - Local dialup to a California-based service. Extremely good
service but at DOUBLE the cost of most local provider services
for what BBS sysops use: UUCP Email & MX fowarding plus news...
This is a national service that is very good about setup and
customer services, but is on the high side price-wise.

DFW.NET - Once a problematic service, DFW Internet is now a stable and
worthwhile feed. They get you online fast when you first
sign up; customer service is a little slow at times but you
are not left forgotten like on other services. This would
actually be the premiere provider in North Texas is it were
not for recent doubling of prices, which make them THE most
               expensive provider of most basic "simple UUCP" services;
(even more than CRL) at $45 per month simple feed. This seems
awfully extravagant since most other local providers now
offer FULL feed with WWW/Home pages etc for a basic rate
of around $19.00 per month; twice the services at less than
half the price of the basic Email-&-news service of DFW.NET

Global Info Services - The ONLY bbs which currently offers more than just
Email and newsgroups. Running a PCBoard (of course) with
complete access to ALL Internet tools and services. See
bbs list for phone number to this unique system!

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS - WE WANT TO REVIEW YOUR SERVICES

Leave Email to mark.robbins@ssanctum.com if you would like for us to
review your range of services. Please remember that we are interested
here in the Simple UUCP services as MOST bbs operators cannot afford
to run dedicated leased telephone lines to a bbs, plus buy into very
expensive add-on software, just to get TelNet, FTP and WEB use for
the users of their existing bbs software and services. MOST all BBS
operators are far more interested in Email and newsgroups via a
simple UUCP feed via a simple dialup modem line to your service.
Those providers who refuse to offer a simple UUCP account are acting
to shut the door on the vast market of BBS Operators who otherwise
would buy into a feed from you as a provider.

---- Call us direct to tell us about YOUR Internet service provider at
       our bbs:
       METRO 817 467-1175 - free call from all 214 and 817.
