INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

QualifyR is written in Visual Basic 3.0, a Microsoft
programming language. The program will run on IBM/PC computers
(286 to 486 and Pentium processors) running Windows 3.1 and
Windows 95.

QualifyR is a mature software application that has been
installed successfully by hundreds of thousands of users. The
overwhelming majority of users have no problem running SETUP.EXE for
a quick and trouble-free installation. However, if you are reading
this file you may be in the minority of people who were not so lucky.

If you have received an error message or if SETUP.EXE has not
completed the installation properly, there is usually a simple
solution.

EXIT WINDOWS, TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF, TURN THE COMPUTER BACK ON,
THEN RUN SETUP.EXE AS THE FIRST WINDOWS ACTIVITY.

This will serve to eliminate a wide range of possible problems
and error messages. Typical error messages received would be:

Cannot find file
Out of memory
Incorrect path or directory
Display problems
Etc.

Why does such a simple solution work for such a wide variety of
problems? Windows has a nasty habit of retaining settings and
driver fragments from previously run programs. (It is not supposed
to do this, but it does.) Sometimes these retained settings
from previous programs can conflict with the running of the
SETUP.EXE program in unexpected and frustrating ways.
Turning the computer off completely and starting a fresh Windows
session will allow you to run SETUP.EXE with a clean slate and,
hopefully, with no annoying error messages.

If this solution does not work, however, you may have a problem
that requires a bit more attention. Some of these are discussed
below:

ERROR MESSAGE:
VBRUN300.DLL required.

QualifyR is programmed in Microsoft Visual Basic version 3.0 and
must have the Visual Basic run time file, VBRUN300.DLL, in the
windows/system directory of your computer. This file contains
many program routines that Visual Basic programs use to operate
properly.

VBRUN300.DLL, weighs in at 398,416 bytes (unzipped) and many people
already have it in their computer, so they will not wish to waste
time downloading something they already have. For this reason, the
version of QualifyR that may be downloaded from the Internet
does not contain VBRUN300.DLL in the installation package.

If you are not sure whether or not your computer already has this
file, you may click out to Windows Program Manager, doubleclick File
Manager, then click on the hard drive icon (drive c: in most computers)
for a listing of directories. Scroll down, click on the windows
directory, click on the system subdirectory, then scroll down to
determine if VBRUN300.DLL is listed within the system subdirectory.

If you indeed do not have VBRUN300.DLL within your c:\windows\system
directory, you may download the QualifyR version containing VBRUN300.DLL
from the Internet download location. After installation, VBRUN300.DLL
will automatically be copied to c:\windows\system and QualifyR should
then operate properly.

ERROR MESSAGE:
GRID.VBX file is out of date.

GRID.VBX is a Microsoft Visual Basic file that is included with the
installation package in order to create grid-type amortization
schedules in QualifyR. When you run the QualifyR installation
program, a GRID.VBX file dated 6/15/93 is copied to your hard
drive windows/system directory. This GRID.VBX file was released
by Microsoft to replace older versions which were defective.
Therefore, the QualifyR/Visual Basic application is expecting to
find the 6/15/93 GRID.VBX file and not later versions. If the
program encounters an earlier (defective) version, it gives an
error message and refuses to go any further. Not very convenient.

This problem seems to occur most frequently with computers
configured in anything other than the standard setup where
there is a single hard drive designated as c: drive with a \windows
subdirectory branching from the c:\ root directory and a \system
directory branching from the \system directory. The problem can
sometimes also occur where there is any older GRID.VBX file anywhere
within your current directory system. For some reason, when the
program encounters an older version of GRID.VBX on your computer,
it will display the error message, then refuse to install the newer
GRID.VBX file from the installation package.

How to correct the problem.

Use Windows File Manager to find all listings of the GRID.VBX file
on your computer hard drive. From File Manager choose "File" from
the upper menu bar, then "Search", then at "Search for:" type
"grid.vbx", "Start at:" type "c:\" or "d:\" as appropriate to
your computer configuration. If you see listings for any GRID.VBX
files with dates earlier than 6/15/93 then use File Manager to
delete the file or rename it GRID.OLD so that it is ignored when
the program looks for the file in this location.

Run setup.exe again. The program should now ignore any incidences
of the older defective GRID.VBX file and install the new file
properly.

These are the "known" problems that can occur during and after
installation. However, computers are nothing if not relentless in
causing new and unusual problems that require the intervention of
human intelligence. If you have encountered a problem not described
