(19-8,Timothy Pintello) Hi Paladin
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) I have no idea either.
(19-11,Paladin) Well you are a designer of the game right
but the con hasn't started yet, Paladin, sorry
(19-11,Paladin) Just asking a simple question

? in order to ask a question of Brian. I'll keep track and call on you in order. Now with no further ado....Brian Reynolds...welcome!

(19-4,Marc F.) First, Brian, congratulations on a
great game and some incredible support on your part. I was curious as to what your plans are for your new company - kinds of games, etc? Any plans for some kind of Civ2-like
software? <g> GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Hi Marc. What company? :-) Can't say too much yet about what I'll be doing...but it will clearly be some sort of strategy game in the grand
tradition... I'll make an announcment as soon as things firm up; obviously I have no plans to "hide". :-) GA

(19-10,mama) follow up Marc?
(19-4,Marc F.) I'll let someone else ask one for now. Thanks, Brian! Good luck!
(19-10,mama) ok...ga Tim
(19-8,Timothy Pintello) Is is possible to have more than just the three specified user defined units or discoveries? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) No, I'm afraid not, unless you replace some of the existing...entries (although I should note you get a "freebie" for Plumbing since that's...
not used in the game). We didn't quite realize how popular
that...whole section was going to be, and it's hard to retrofit it now...without changing the saved game format.:-( GA
(19-10,mama) follow up Tim?
(19-8,Timothy Pintello) What is Plumbing, I have never seen that one.GA
(19-9,Mario Escalante) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) We originally had it as a civilizaiton advance (along the...Sanitation/Refrigeration route)... but it was cut out of the game, and ...unlike other advances which were cut, was accidentally left in disabled state on the list. So you can...get a fourth user-def. advance by replacing it. GA
(19-10,mama) I'm flushed!
(19-10,mama) ok ga Kelland
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) As best as you can tell, what will the Civ 2 support at MPS be like without you? Will we see any more patches? Does anybody left at MPS know the game nearly as well as you do? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) It's unlikely but conceivable that there will be further patches...
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Basically I don't think there will be any more "extra fea
tures"...If some major problem surfaced it would be patched, ...and obviously I'd be glad to help MPS with this since it'
s in my ...own best interest as well for Civ2 to do well...
There is an outside (and I do mean outside) chance that SH
will...ask me to do a patch under contract. GA
(19-10,mama) follow up Kelland?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Actually, let me add one more thing. I should also mention that I think most of the "meaty"possibilities...for patches have already been addressed. GA
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) The patches sure were a treat for those of us buying the game. Is "Civ 3" on SH's "serious
plan" list? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) It's conceivable, and I've been asked tentatively about the possibility of doing it on contract. That's about all the info I have. GA
(19-10,mama) ga Mario
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Is there any way to modify the AI's use of nuclear weapons within the rules.txt? GA
(19-4,Marc F.) ?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) ?
now nothing(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, if you change the attack strength to another # than 99, the weapon will be treated as a big cruise missle ...
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) (i.e. no nuclear effects). That's about the only thing you can do other than...actually removing them from the game. GA
(19-10,mama) follow up Mario?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) (After followup I need to interject a technical question)
(19-9,Mario Escalante) 1/2 follow up 1/2 comment
(19-10,mama) ga Mario
(19-9,Mario Escalante) How do you remove them? and Thank you for all your continued support and getting the "little" things tweaked for us to enjoy this game. GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) You can remove them by changing the prerequisite from "Roc" for Rocketry to "no" for don't use. GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Shall I ask my technical question, mama?
(19-10,mama) go ahead with the technical Brian
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) During this CON I've been invited to join conference groups...about 6 times so far. A) Can I stop that, and B) perhaps these people don't...know where we are talking? GA
(19-41,Russell K. Booth) ?
(19-10,mama) You can use the ignore function in wincim or squelch in terminal mode
(19-22,Morgana/Assoc. Syso) or /noinvite in terminal mode
(19-4,Marc F.) Mama, that's individual - if he turns off invitations under preferences it will stop all of them.
(19-10,mama) by typing /squelch ## ah, ok Brian...choice is yours <g>
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Preferences where?

(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Okay, all fixed. Let's proceed.
(19-10,mama) ok
(19-10,mama) Marc is next, then Kelland
(19-10,mama) ga Marc
/sen 10 did you
(19-4,Marc F.) I wanted to hear Brian's suggestions for the best way to maintain peace throughout an entire game, even when I have a huge lead in size/tech. I can get clear to the space ship and always get sneak attacked, no matter what I do. GA.
(19-27,Bennie) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, let's see...I think you'll need to keep your neighbors happy and preferably in alliance with you...This is of course difficult esp. at deity level...But a lot of tech trading, gifts, etc, certainly helps...
Once you've got someone at alliance, they can't sneak...attack you w/o breaking alliance first...You should avoid talking to them as long as possible...And then give them a tech if they ask... A couple of non-obvious ways to keep people happy:
1) Tech -trading- makes them happy...
2) Establishing trade routes with them...
It's not always possible to do, but it has in fact been done. GA
(19-4,Marc F.) Oh! I didn't realize trade routes affected attitude! Thanks, Brian. I'll give alliances a closer look after this. GA.

(19-35,Kelland Coleman) This is probably taboo, but...What's your best score, not using Cheat Mode? Just HAD to ask! <BG> GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Um, let me think a sec... I've never intentionally "maxed out" at Civ2 (e.g. kill all but one...
then land spaceship on last possible turn)... but I have
scored about... 200% in deity level w/ world conquest in 1920s... At Civ1 I was... proud to have scored 250% w/ 100,000,000 citizens, a size 42 city, and landing the spaceship while turn still moving in 10-year increments. (Such fun to brag) :-) GA
(19-9,Mario Escalante) ?
(19-10,mama) swoon!
(19-10,mama) follow up?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) I've seen others with scores above 10,000 (1200%) at Diety level. Is this possible without modifying the Rules.txt file or cheat mode?
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Just to clarify one of the threads in the forum recently......How much "help" does the Ai receive in producing units and/or Wonders.....
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Believe it or not I don't know. Sounds pretty stunning, though. Also sounds mind-numbingly tedious! ga
(19-10,mama) ga Bennie
(19-27,Bennie) i was wondering...if there are ways of speeding up your way of getting to space travel because i haven't had enough time to do so
(19-9,Mario Escalante) sorry. hit the Enter. <blushing>
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) ?
(19-10,mama) ga Brian
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, sounds like you need a stronger economy; possibly you haven't expanded quickly enough (try having each city build two settlers before working on city improvements for a while)...Be sure to go to Monarchy, and later Democracy... Tradetech with the computer players... and lots of practice! GA
(19-10,mama) follow up Bennie?
(19-27,Bennie) what are these cheat codes i'm hearing about what do they do?
(19-10,mama) ga
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, we include a full "cheat mode" right on the menu... which you can turn on and do "pretty much anything"... There's not much you can't do w/ that. GA
(19-10,mama) ga Mario
(19-9,Mario Escalante) well, as I was saying.....how much help does the AI receive with producing/building units and Wonders? Particularly when you are ahead. Some note that shield production can be as little as 80% for the AI. Is this true? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Deja vu? :-) ..
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, the basic scheme for difficulty level is that...
(19-9,Mario Escalante) (g)
you play at approximate parity at King level...Below that level you have a production advantage... Above that level the AI has a slight advantage... For shield production this is reflected by adjusting the # of shields... it takes to "fill up a row" in the box...For you it normally takes 10 shields per row... At emperor level, AI takes 9 shields. At deity 8 shields... That's the only "help" it gets on wonders (and it gets it for all... construction, not just wonders)...It is allowed to spend its gold, of course...
umm... That's all (just had to scroll up and review question). GA
(19-27,Bennie) also one last thing i wanted to say was i love the game!!!!!!!!!! and also that i'm only 14 which might help for you to know the age range that plays the game.
(19-10,mama) follow up Mario?
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Without messing with the "flow" of the game..... can you add or modify a Wonder? ga
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) You mean "create your own wonder?" GA
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Yes. Or reduce or enhance the effects of an existing Wonder.
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) No, those have to be hard-coded...

(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Since, after all, each one is pretty unique, and with far-reaching functions in the game. GA
(19-10,mama) GA Kelland
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) One of the most frustrating things at the end of a game is to launch a space ship only to have the AI quick-build a configuration faster than yours, launch and beat you. The AI obviously has the advantage of "knowing" what these configurations are. Is there a way (other than lots ofplaying) WE can know what space ship configurations produce which flight time? GA
(19-8,Timothy Pintello) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Yes... When you're working on your spaceship, note that on the...left side of the screen it is telling you how many you have of each "part"...On the line that says "Structural:"... there will be an asterisk if you don't have enough...structural pieces to support your current configuration... So you can add all the components/modules you want... and then add structurals until the asterisk goes away...
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) umm... Other than that, the main idea is to build 1 of each module, then... as many engines as possible... (and of course Fusion Power helps) GA
(19-10,mama) follow up?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) Thanks, this helps...
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) It would be nice to sometimes know beforehand... what the configs are so I can plan how many turns... I need to take in order to beat the AI. GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Yes, we should have done a little better on that--sorry! GA
(19-10,mama) ga Tim
(19-8,Timothy Pintello) Is there going to be some kind of multi-user follow up to Civ 2? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) The current answer is no. And to save you blowing your followup on the... obvious next question, ... We (the team) certainly always intended to do a multiplayer version. In fact, we were working on it right up to December... when we stopped to concentrate on finishing the single-player version. After the single player shipped, Spectrum ... management reversed course (against our recommendation)...and cancelled the multi
player. That's where things stand ... as of now. GA

(19-9,Mario Escalante) Realting to Kelland's ?.......Do you have suggestions on what makes a good spaceship config?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, the trade-off is speed versus points. ...
(19-17,Sammy Campese) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) For the most points, you want all 4 of each module... For the most speed, 1 of each module, then as many components (i.e. engines) as you have time to build... And don't forget, once you discover Fusion Power, your spaceship becomes fusion powered and you gain speed. GA
(19-10,mama) follow up?

(19-17,Sammy Campese) What Terrain do I need to produce uranium in one of my cities?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Thanks for the compliment! Be sure to buy my next game. :-)
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Let's see... uranium... I believe uranium is usually computed by (simplified)... multiplying the # of mountains * # deserts * # tundra in your... city radius. And of course you have to have discovered... Nuclear power. I believe mountains are most important.
Note... that in one of the recent patches we increased the likelihood a bit. GA

(19-9,Mario Escalante) This may be a touchy question...but :-) you discussed SH's decision to not follow up with the multi-player... can this be part of the reason for your departure .... or are striking it rich on your own...you obviously know how to support customers.. :) ga
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Um, as far as reasons for leaving SH... I think for now at least I'd just like to say... "irreconcilable differences with management" ...
and leave it at that. I certainly do want to support all of ... "my" customers and in the future I hope to be able to... do that even better than before. Obviously I plan to be around writing strategy games for a long time to come! GA
(19-10,mama) follow up?
(19-9,Mario Escalante) yes... you mentioned your next strategy game is going to be in "the grand tradition..." of what? Miliatry sims like HPS makes or Civ2 style? ga
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Both... Only time will tell of course, but probably historical ..and at least "Civ-like" GA
(19-10,mama) ga Marc
(19-4,Marc F.) I just wanted to offer my services as a play-tester for your next game, Brian <BG>.
(19-4,Marc F.) I do hope that you make it customizable, as that does seem to promote popularity, as shown by Civ2 , DOOM, and others. GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Yes, customizability has certainly been a big hit... and you'll definitely keep seeing that... MPS never tests out of house; only time will tell what... will be the case for me in the future. :-) GA

(19-4,Marc F.) Not now, thanks. I'll keep my eyes on the shelves at the store, Brian <G>
(19-10,mama) ok...ga Morgie
(19-22,Morgana/Assoc. Syso) Thanks mama. Brian, thanks for being with us. For the benefit of those who... may read the transcript of this conference to find out more about CIV2 prior to... buying it, could you give a little summary of the game and how, for example... it differs from CIV1? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Sure... (In 400,000 words or less... ;-)
(19-10,mama) 10 less
(19-17,Sammy Campese) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Basically, you become the ruler of an ancient tribe or "civilization"... in 4000 B.C., about the time of the founding of the first cities... You make all the important decisions for your tribe... where to build cities... whether to improve your economy
or... go to war... You bring your empire through ancient times, into the middle ages and renaissance, and finally into the modern age, where you can win the game... by becoming the first civilization to successfully colonize another world. GA

(19-10,mama) follow up Morgie?
(19-22,Morgana/Assoc. Syso) Yes...
(19-22,Morgana/Assoc. Syso) someone told me something they'd read in one of the posts on the boards here or in the game publishers' forum, can't recall which... that I thought was really interesting about one of the branches of the U.S. armed forces using Civilization as part of their training...
is this so? How did that come about? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) It's not something I've actually heard about, but that doesn't mean it isn't so. GA
(19-10,mama) ga Kelland
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) I seem to recall you stated in the manual (yes, I actually read it!) that you took a year reprieve in
(19-35,Kelland Coleman)orderto brainstorm the Civ2 conept. Did you do some traveling around the world in order to "enrich" your ideas? For example, some of the Wonder videos are great, indicative of some background or knowledge of the actual Wonders. (BTW, I'll go for the game-testing as well!) GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) I didn't so much take a year sabbatical as spent a year in England -writing- the game. I was in Yorkshire up until August 95... The wonders movies are the (I think brilliant) work of Mike Ely and Tim Train, the MPS multimedia team... we got together to think of good places to add multimedia to Civ2. I suggested that the best place to put multimedia is when the player has done something to really deserve all those bells and whistles. Wonders seemed the idea place to concentrate. We tried for a "Ken Burns"-style feel. GA
(19-10,mama) follow up?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) And the high council, I might add, is hilarious. Why Yorkshire? GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) My wife had a Fulbright. Microprose wanted a game. :-) GA
(19-10,mama) <g>
(19-10,mama) excellent strategy!

(19-17,Sammy Campese) Is version 1.11 going to be the last patch?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) As far as I know. :-( GA
(19-10,mama) follow up?
(19-17,Sammy Campese) No thanks
(19-10,mama) any more?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) One more ?
(19-10,mama) ok...ga Kelland
(19-10,mama) then I have one
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) Will you drop us some kind of note... when you do your next game, so we know it's *really* you behind the scenes? (I mean let us know in this forum). GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) But of course! ...
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) Thanks
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Believe me the last thing I'm planning to do is run off and try to "hide" somewhere. As soon as I have definite plans, I'll be trumpeting them from the hilltops! GA
(19-10,mama) ga K
(19-23,Khatti/Ass't Sysop) What are some reliable strategies you would recommend to first time players?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Let's see...
(19-9,Mario Escalante) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) 1) Don't forget to keep expanding... every city should build 2 settlers to found new cities for a while... 2) Keep a couple settlers in reserve to improve your cities... 3) Connect all your cities with roads for security reasons... 4) Get to Monarchy as soon as you can, for improved economy...5) Try to meet lots of other tribes and play the "middleman" in technology trading...6) Don't forget about trade routes-- the revenue bonuses you get are added to your science as well as your treasury!
(19-23,Khatti/Ass't Sysop) Is there some guideline for expansion ie so you don't try to do too much too soon?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Not really-- expand to fill the available space, until you have 10-20 cities (depends on your geographical situation of course)... Obviously once you run into somebody else you'll need to take appropriate steps... It becomes harder to keep expanding while you're at war... but you should continue to do so if possible... Of course war often... leads to expansion itself. Once you've switched over to Republic... or Democracy, it's much harder to expand, so you then move into the mode of maximizing your economy in your existing cities. GA
(19-23,Khatti/Ass't Sysop) That's all for now, thanks, Brian.
(19-10,mama) What is the best part of the world for an idiot to begin the game?
(19-10,mama) <speaking as the idiot I am> ga
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) You mean on the "earth" map?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) ga
(19-10,mama) yep
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Personally I like Germany, Russia, India or Egypt-- right there... on the big main continent, and at the crossroads where you'll meet lots of people right away. Of course not everybody wants to meet lots of people. GA
(19-10,mama) How about the other worlds...is there an easy place to start?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) The other worlds are mostly intended for specific scenarios. GA
(19-10,mama) ok...guess I'll head for the cradle of civ <g>
(19-10,mama) ga Mario
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Can you prevent the AI opps. from subverting/sabotaging your cities by maintaining a spy/diplomat in each of the cities (or at the very least, in your most important cities? Particularly when you have decided to shed the cloak of democracy for a century or two. GA
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) The counterespionage only works for tech-stealing, I'm... afraid. To prevent subversion (which by the way only... occurs on Emperor & Deity levels)... you'll need to make it too expensive for them to... bribe your cities. Best ways to do that are 1) keep your
treasury well filled 2) Courthouses in your cities (doubles the price for bribery), 3) Communism (also doubles)...
(19-28,Russell K. Booth) ?
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) On the other hand, you can try to keep his spies from getting to your cities. GA
(19-10,mama) follow up Mario?
(19-9,Mario Escalante) Thanks. Oh. Why, oh why do they seem to build 600 fleet navies? Most of my games have been played at Prince or King level....
(19-9,Mario Escalante) but they seem to have massive fleets which appear to do little to other than patrol the seas.
(19-9,Mario Escalante) ga
(19-9,Mario Escalante) I mean they don't seem to attack often.
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Hmmm. They probably intended them for you, but couldn't find their way to your cities. GA
(19-10,mama) any ?
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) No
(19-10,mama) ok gang...I want to thank Brian and Brian...do you have some closing remarks for us? ga Brian
(19-19,Brian Reynolds) Well, I'm glad everyone is enjoying the game... Obviously I look forward to doing more games just as much fun! I'll still be around on Compuserve; you can write to be at my e-mail account here. Also I usually hang around on this forum and/or GamePubB. And of course look for my next game in another year or so! Enjoyed the conference. GA
(19-35,Kelland Coleman) Bye Brian, and thanks for your time! Good luck on future endevours.
