Saint Malo, 16 August 1944 -
After the bitter fighting in Normandy, and the fall of Avranches in July 1944
Middleton's 8th Corps (Patton's 3rd) took a high speed turn towards the Brittany
peninsula. In front was a hodgepodge of retreating German units. Brittany had
been the home of U-boats since 1941; pens were located in Brest, Lorient &
Saint Nazaire. Saint Malo was the 1st port in Patton's path after entering the
peninsula. This historical city, home of privateers during past centuries,
offered few reasons to be taken in 1944. There was no pen there, only the
opportunity to secure a port for logistical reasons. Under Hitler's orders,
the garrison at Saint Malo resisted, and the siege ended up costing the US
thousands of casualties.
You are in charge of a US company. Your task is to attack the western part
of the city. The three objectives are: the Kommandantur, the bridge at the
city's entrance, but most important, the destruction of the pillboxes guarding the
entrance to the small harbor in this part of town.  This scenario is historical;
its geographical configuration is based on what I can remember of the area. The
steel pillboxes were still there 12 years ago, punctured with AP shells, some
still encrusted in the wall of the now quiet cupolas.
