ENCOUNTER AT KRUJA - 22 September 1943

After the Italian collapse of the 8th September the "Gruppo Armate
Est", the Italian Army in Albania, dissolved. General Azzi put together
the remaining of the "Firenze" Division in order to attack the Germans
in the Albanian town of Kruja. A "Colonna Corazzata" under the orders
of Ltc Fuso had the order to destroy the iron mines in the mountains
north from Kruja and then join the "Firenze" in the attack on the city.
The Italian plans were known to the Germans and a small German Panzer
Group, leaded by Colonel Egon "Untier" Neumeister, moved up to intercept
and destroy the Italians. The two columns fought the whole day in the middle
of the mountains for the control of the mines. Historically, it was sort
of a draw, tactically and strategically every issue is possible.
