                        SEPTEMBER 1996 - 7

The regular meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society was
held on September 4, 1996 at the Lanark Museum at 8pm.

President Irma Willoughby welcomed the 42 people in attendance as
well as the Museum staff.

It was moved by Dorothy Lewis and seconded by Gary Byron that the
July and August minutes be accepted as printed in the newsletter.
Motion carried.

Helen Gillan gave the Treasurer's Report setting out a balance on
August 14 of $3,438.64. Membership fees were $66.00, books sold
for $20.00 and the sale of the Hopetown Cemetery books amounted to
$136.00 for a total of $222.00. Expenses for stamps was $141.64,
envelopes $6.83, donation to the Lanark Museum $20.00, purchase of
a Watson's Corners Cemetery book $7.50, QuickPrint account of
$141.64 for a total of $175.97, leaving a bank balance of
$3,484.67. [Note: 259 newsletters were mailed]. It was moved by
Shirley Somerville and seconded by Ernie Miller and Carmel
Fergusson that the Treasurer's Report be accepted and all bills
paid. Motion carried.

Newcomers to the meeting were asked to introduce themselves and the
names which they were researching.

It was moved by Bob Sargeant and seconded by Helen Gillan that we
look after having Hilda Geddes' book published for her and obtain
copies for her as required. Motion carried.

It was moved by Shirley Somerville and seconded by Georgina Doe
that we purchase new plastic filing card and magazine holders for
our library collection in Smiths Falls. Motion carried.

Shirley Somerville also requested that if anyone had old binders
that the rings were no longer functional that they bring them in to
the next meeting as she can use the covers for dividers in the
filing cabinets.

Gary Byron brought up the matter of a membership card or pass for
use at the Almonte Registry Office, and if anyone has any problems
with this matter, please contact Marilyn Snedden or Irma
Willoughby. [ED. NOTE: Please see further on in this newsletter
for a copy of the letter granting LCGS members permission to access
the land registry records in Almonte.]

Charles Dobie reported that Certa Cito has a new number (267-3261).
He also reported that the 1st version of the B.C. interments is now
on Certa Cito.

Our guest speaker, Hilda Geddes, was introduced by Roberta
Sargeant. She spoke on several of the books she has published or
been involved with. Her latest book "Our pony express" which is
"hot off the press" was available at the meeting for $4.00. Hilda
was born and grew up at Snow Road where she still resides. When
she finished public school, she went to work in her father's store,
post office and station. She was eventually appointed Assistant
Postmistress. She told of the excellent service they received back
then when they received mail twice a day on the train and all the
letters had to be stamped on the front and back and also stamped by
each post office that the letter passed through making it easy to
discover who was to blame if your letter was late! On April 29,
1959, the K&P Railroad lost the contract to deliver the mail to the
station and it was delivered by truck from then on. She told of
the three times that they had fires in the area of the post office
and how lucky they were that they did not lose their home. One
time she and a train employee beat out the flames of a grass fire
with brooms.

Hilda's first published book was "The Centenary of the Presbyterian
Church in Canada, 1875 - 1975". It was a history of three
Presbyterian churches in McDonalds Corners, Elphin and Snow Road.
They had ordered 500 copies of the book and they were all sold
before Christmas. They were able to get 50 more copies which also
sold, after which they were unable to order more from the printer.
It was suggested that it might be possible to have someone scan the
book and have more copies printed as there is still a good deal of
interest in the book. Her second book was an involvement with the
County Book for Frontenac where she did a section for the Townships
of North and South Canonto. Her third book, published in 1985 for
the Snow Road Centennial was titled "The First One Hundred Years"
and was a history of the Snow Road Presbyterian Church and
contained many pictures of the congregation. Hilda's fourth book
"The Canadian Mississippi River" is also an excellent book showing
many scenes along the length of the Mississippi River and involved
many travels up and down the river obtaining information. She
ordered 1000 copies of the book, which all sold, and subsequently
had 1000 more copies printed. She is now working on yet another
book on the subject of Palmerston Township.

Roberta Sargeant thanked Hilda for her talk which was enjoyed by
all and presented Hilda with ten copies of "Our Pony Express" for
being so kind as to come and be our speaker for the evening. We
look forward to seeing more of her books in print.

Everyone was invited to tour both floors of the Museum. On the
motion of Gary Byron the meeting was adjourned. A lovely lunch of
sweets, cold and hot drinks were served by the Museum Committee.

married Rachel LECKIE (born 1850, died ?). I would like to find
out more about Rachel LECKIE's branch of the family. Also I would
like to find out more about their son Duncan (born 26 April 1847,
died 25 Feb 1936) and his wife Jean KING and their son William
Leckie (born 3 July 1886 died 2 March 1960). I don't know about

WARK- As a new member of your group, I would like to seek some help
in locating information regarding our family. Specifically, I am
looking for any information about an Alexander WARK and Agnes
McEWEN (McEWAN) who came to Lanark Township in 1821 aboard the
Commerce from Scotland. They arrived with three children, one boy
under 12 and two girls over 12. They settled in Lanark Township on
Conc. 5, Lot 13W and then 13E. I am pretty sure that the boy was
Alexander WARK, Jr., and is my husband's great, great grandfather.
Who were the girls?
On a visit to Lanark in June I tried to find the burial site for
Alexander and Agnes with no luck. What happened t them? Also, who
was Andrew WARK who settled on Conc. 6, Lot 17 in Lanark Township
and is listed in the 1842 census?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FUM(M)ERTON- My maternal ancestors are from Lanark County and I am
particularly concerned with renewing long-interrupted research on
the FUM(M)ERTONs of the Appleton area in Ramsay township. My
grandfather David Lochart FUMERTON, born 1870, was the son of James
FUMERTON and Jane CAVERS and is said to have spent some time in
Alberta and Manitoba before returning to Lanark in 1920. He died
in the Almonte area in 1930.
My other interest is the family of John FERRIER and his wife
Margaret CAVERS of the Scotch Line, Perth, and whose children -
including my grandmother Margaret Robena FERRIER - were born in the
1880s.

CAVANAGH in the Perth area, but changed to KAVANAGH when they moved
to Pontiac Co., Quebec) and his wife Margaret SULLIVAN were living
in the Perth area for 5-6 years in the 1840s before settling in
Vinton, Pontiac Co. Has anyone traced the CAVANAGHs?

Joseph LEGARE was born c1790 near Quebec City. He was recruited to
join a select regiment in 1809 and was QM Sgt with the Canadian
Fencibles during War 1812-14. He served at the Battle of
Chateauguay and was awarded that medal.
In 1816 he was discharged along with the De Meuron and the De
Watteville Regiments at Kingston. He had served over seven years
in the military. Thus he was among the veterans and the first
pioneers of the Rideau Settlement where he petitioned and received
a military land grant along the Mississippi River. He built a log
cabin and a stone house later about a mile north of Balderson. He
obtained a license for an inn and ran a ferry across the river. In
his register Rev Bell recorded two marriages 1839 & 1841 at
Legare's Ferry. A century later the surname on this line faded
from the region.
Elizabeth HUGHES, daughter of Patrick and Anne LEGARY, was my
paternal grandmother. She married David AMELL who was a river
driver on the Mississippi. I would like to hear from researchers
of the above families and compare notes on this ancestral heritage.
