     Introduction
     ------------

Version FIVE of The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid, contains more
than ONE MILLION entries. It is a COMPLETE REPLACEMENT encompassing
     all previous OCFA releases.

It is a pleasure to announce the addition of the Bruce County
Genealogical Society, the Temiskaming Genealogy Group, as well as
the Niagara Peninsula and Norfolk Branches of the OGS. The Perth,
     Waterloo-Wellington, Kingston, London-Middlesex, Lambton, Ottawa,
Kawartha, Quinte and Brant Branches of the OGS, as well as the Upper
Ottawa Valley Genealogical Group continue to support the project.

Data published by the above organizations is obviously essential
to the growth of the OCFA database. However, the volunteers who have
spent hundreds of hours to transfer the data from "paper to computer"
represent the heart and sole of OCFA. Without them, the project could
     not have succeeded.

I would like to extend my very sincere thanks to each and every
volunteer whose name appears on the "OCFA honour roll". All of them
have contributed to the growth of the OCFA database. Several seem to
have virtually altered their life style in order to sacrifice a few
hours every day to enter data. This dedication shown by Don Pettit,
Sherri Pettit, Eva Pettit, Marianne Wilkat, Marjory Wilson and Darryl
Bonk represents over 200,000 entries since the release of OCFA Four
     last June!

I would also like to acknowledge the continued public relations
campaign being carried on by Stuart Wright, Don Park, Jim McKane and
Brian Hurdle, Don Pettit, Sherri Pettit and Art Dainton.

     given surname.

README.TXT The file you are reading.

        FILE_ID.DIZ File description.

     Reading the Files
     -----------------

The character separated ASCII format can be read with an
ASCII viewer such as Vern Buergs popular LIST program, or by
using the DOS 'Type' command (type filename.ext |more), but
greater viewing flexibility can be gained by importing these
files into a Data Base program.

     Field Sizes
     -----------

The following field sizes will allow you to safely import
the data into a database program without losing any of the field
     contents:

                          Surname: 30
                            Given: 45
                         Cemetery: 50
                           County: 20
                         Township: 20
                        Reference: 18
                          Soundex: 4

The smaller OCFA5CEM.ASC file is based on the following database
     fields and sizes:

                        Reference: 18
                         Cemetery: 50
                           County: 20
                         Township: 20
                              Con: 16
                              Lot: 6
                              Pub: 16
                              Vol: 5
                             Year: 5

     OCFA5REF.TXT
     ------------

This file contains essential REFERENCE material, and a plain
text list of all the cemeteries entered to date, sorted by county
and township. You may wish to print this file for future reference.

     ---------------------------------------------

     The Final Word
     --------------

It would be naive to believe that the OCFA database does not
contain a growing number of inaccuracies. The process of data
transfer from headstone to OCFA includes many steps and comes from
many sources and is beyond my control.... errors are inevitable.
Please do not hesitate to point out any errors or omissions that
     you encounter.

Good luck with your research. I hope this latest version of
the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid helps you in that elusive search
     for your ancestors.

                   Enjoy.......... Ron Demaray
