What is the Windows 95 Registry?

The following is a brief explanation of the Windows 95 data base called the

Registry. The Registry is the heart and soul of the Windows 95 operating

system and stores the most vital information needed by LANtastic for Windows

95

The Registry stores the remembrance of settings used by LANtastic for Windows

95 in two files: SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT. SYSTEM.DAT contains hardware

configurations and software settings used for LANtastic for Windows 95

networking. Note: many applications today rely on the Registry rather than the

old .INI files. The USER.DAT is for user-specific information such as color

schemes, Explorer settings, and network passwords.

LANtastic for Windows 95 no longer uses the old .INI text files, that can be

read by any text editor. These files are in place for backward compatibility

only. The Registry stores all LANtastic for Windows 95 data in hidden binary

files in the Windows folder called SYSTEMS.DAT and USER.DAT.

HKEYS are broken down to six categories as follows:

The following shows some of the areas that LANtastic for Windows 95 enters

information about your network.

Because much of this information is in binary code we have not included in

this bulletin all areas in which LANtastic for Windows 95 applies its

information.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT: Contains software settings about drag-and-drop operations,

handless shortcut information, and other user interface information. There

will be a subkey for every file association you have defined. LANtastic for

Windows 95 stores information concerning the LANtastic Sharing user interface
