QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS, RELEASE 5.0f
===================================
This README file explains how to update your version of Quicken 5
for Windows to release 5.0f, which corrects a number of problems
in earlier releases, including the problems with Subcategory Merge
and File Validate.

For a detailed list of changes included in this release, go to the
end of this file and review the sections titled "CHANGES MADE TO
QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS IN THIS RELEASE" .

The following products can be updated:
Quicken 5.0 for Windows
Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows Floppy
Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows CD
Quicken Financial Suite

STEP 1: CHECK THE RELEASE NUMBER OF YOUR VERSION OF QUICKEN
===========================================================
1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows.

2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu.

3. Look at the lower right corner of the window.
If it says "Release 5.0e" or lower, proceed
   to the next step.
If it says "Release 5.0f," you already have the latest
release and you do not need to install this update.

4. Exit Quicken 5 for Windows. Also, if you have Quicken
Deluxe, exit all applications you are currently running (such
as Quicken Home Inventory, Finance 101, or Quicken
    Financial Planner).

If you have installed previous updates, please remove any
files in your existing UPDATE directory before downloading
   the 5.0f update file.

STEP 2: EXTRACT THE 50f.EXE FILE
====================================
1. After the file is downloaded to the UPDATE directory,
run it to extract the UPDATE file.

Win 3.1: Click on the File menu and choose Run.
Then type c:\update\QW50f.exe (for Quicken regular)
or type c:\update\DLX50f.exe (for Quicken Deluxe or
Quicken Financial Suite) and click OK.

Win 95: Click the Start button and select Run.
Then type c:\update\QW50f.exe (for Quicken regular)
or type c:\update\DLX50f.exe (for Quicken Deluxe or
Quicken Financial Suite) and click OK.

STEP 3: RUN THE UPDATE FILE
===========================
1. Win 3.1: Click on File menu, select Run,
   type "c:\update\update", and press Enter.

Win 95: Click on Start, select Run,
   type "c:\update\update\", and press Enter.

2. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the
Update window appears, verify the directory containing
your Quicken 5 for Windows program files.
For example, if you installed Quicken 5 in the default
directory, it will display c:\quickenw. If it is
   correct, click OK.

If the displayed directory is incorrect, type the path
of the directory where the Quicken 5 files are located
   and click OK.

3. If the update program displays this message: "Patch warning.
Old File does not exist," click OK to close the message box
and continue the update. The update program is trying to
update a Quicken Deluxe application that you have not
   installed.

4. The update program can take as long as 20 minutes on some
systems. It displays a completion message when it is finished.

STEP 4: CHECK THAT RELEASE 5.0f IS PROPERLY INSTALLED
=====================================================
1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows.

2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu.

3. Look at the lower right corner of the window. If it says
"Release 5.0f," release 5.0f was properly installed.

If it says "Release 5.0," double-check the directory in
which Quicken 5 for Windows is located and repeat
"STEP 3: RUN THE UPDATE FILE" above.

STEP 4: REMOVE THE FILES IN THE UPDATE DIRECTORY
=========================================================
You can safely remove the contents of the UPDATE directory
once you confirm that release 5.0f was successfully installed.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS
======================================================
If you have questions about the update process, refer to the
Intuit Technical Support phone number in the back of your
Quicken 5 for Windows User's Guide.

MORE CORRECTIONS IN RELEASE 5.0F AND PREVIOUS RELEASES
======================================================

REGISTER
o Transactions are now updated correctly when merging
subcategories. In releases before 5.0d, users sometimes
had a problem when they deleted a subcategory and then
merged the subcategory with its parent. (Fixed in 5.0d)
o "Out of dict ref" error no longer occurs when you add a new
transaction. Previous releases could cause this error in rare
  instances. (5.0d)
o You can now delete transactions that are missing their
secondary record. Some users of previous releases found they
could not delete certain transactions. (5.0f)

FILE OPERATIONS
o File Validate now locates records correctly in instances where
transactions displayed "NA" after a user performed a File
Validate on a clean file. (5.0d)
o File Validate now corrects more kinds of damaged data, including
damage that causes confusion between transactions (duplicate
transaction IDs) in an online account. (5.0e)
o After the user performs a File Copy, the program no longer
displays "NA" inappropriately in transactions. In previous
releases, this could happen in some cases. (5.0d)
o Quicken now displays an error message if File Restore or
  File Copy fail. (5.0e)
o File Validate no longer erases the list of "Last 4 Reports."
  (5.0f)
o File Validate now removes price history records from the .QMD.
  (5.0f)
o The File Copy process has been strengthened in two ways:
-It now continues even though damaged .QSD records exist.
(Such records are unlikely to cause any problems, so they
     shouldn't stop the copy process.)
-It now continues when it encounters split or lot records.
(In earlier releases, the process would sometimes stop when
it encountered split or lot records.) (5.0f)

REPORTS
o If a Transaction Report is created with multiple accounts
selected, the opening balance now sums all of the opening
balances of all included accounts. (5.0d)
o Filtering an Investment Transaction Report by memo no longer
  causes a GPF. (5.0d)
o The named date of a Net Worth Report is now retained when
  the report is memorized. (5.0d)
o The Reconcile Report menu item is now available after an account
  has been reconciled. (5.0d)
o Copy to Clipboard no longer drops the first two lines of the
  report. (5.0e)
o Reports now pick up the opening balances of accounts that have
the Opening Balance as the sole transaction. (5.0e)

PRINTING
o Printing a voucher check now correctly prints a single category
  in the voucher section. (5.0d)

TAX PLANNER
o When doing a data import with 15 windows open in Quicken,
Quicken no longer causes a GPF. (5.0d)

CHECKFREE
o CheckFree email fix now allows you to transmit multiple email
  lines. (5.0d)
o Email no longer allows lines to wrap and limits lines to 60
characters so they will not be truncated during transmission.
  (5.0e)
o Names without middle initials in the account setup are now
  transmitted correctly. (5.0f)
o Changes to account setup are always sent. (Prior releases would
  sometimes fail to send.) (5.0f)
o CheckFree menu items are enabled for FIXED payments that are
  entered in the register. (5.0f)
o Changed the message presented when you try to re-record or
  delete a fixed payment. (5.0f)

CONVERTING DATA FROM DOS
o When converting an amortized memorized transaction from a
Quicken for DOS data file, Quicken now allows a loan account
to be set up during the convert process. (5.0d)

WINDOWS 95
o Quicken now allows you to select the File Preview tab on the
  properties sheet of a password-protected file. (5.0d)
o Quicken now bypasses writing Reminder information to the
qwshellx.ini file during startup. This was done to avoid some
intermittent GPFs that could be caused by reading in corrupted
  Reminder information. (5.0e)

TAX FORM LINE ITEM FILE (TAX.SCD)
o The latest TAX.SCD is included. (5.0d)

ONLINE BANKING AND BILL PAYMENT
o Various problems with reconciling an online account have been
  fixed. (5.0d)
o A negative account balance received from online banking will
now be correctly interpreted as negative rather than positive.
  (5.0d)
o When email is received with banking data, the Online Banking
window is now properly updated to show the banking data that
  was received. (5.0d)
o Notification that a charge card payment is due is now displayed
only when there really is a payment due. (5.0d)
o When an invalid PIN or failure to connect causes an online
bill payment session to fail, Quicken no longer prevents you
from modifying payments that were included in that failed
session (since they were not in fact sent). (5.0d)
o Online Banking now handles error conditions that occur during
  transmission. (5.0e)

PERFORMANCE
o For Windows 95, NT, and OS/2, Quicken no longer takes up all of
the CPU cycles when Quicken is idle. (5.0e)

CHANGES TO QUICKEN DELUXE 5 FOR WINDOWS

Home Inventory
o The register drop-down list now opens when the Quicken Home
  Inventory window is resized. (5.0d)

Investor Insight
o Launching Investor Insight after creating a general note no
  longer causes a GPF. (5.0d)
o You can now import prices from Investor Insight when multiple
securities have the same symbol. (5.0f)

Mutual Fund Finder
o We updated the Help file. (5.0d)
o The Net Assets value in the Fund Detail dialog box now shows the
correct amount for the few funds whose net assets are over
  4.2 billion. (5.0f)
o We've added five extended asset classes (5.0f):
        Multi-Asset-Global
        Multi-sector Bond
        Diversified EMG Markets-Stock
        Specialty-Real Estate
        Specialty-Communication
