____________
NEW FEATURES

* EHANCEMENTS *

1. NetShield for NetWare is now Novell certified.

2. The "<file> may not be executable" message is
no longer displayed or saved to a log file.

3. Improved feature resolves the issue of inbound
files not being scanned on 4.1 servers.

4. The Word Concept virus is now detected.

5. Novell compressed files remain compressed after
    periodic and immediate scans.

6. CrossServer updating now properly transfers
    updated virus information files.

7. The message "Failed to turn off service advertising"
is no longer displayed when NetShield NLM is
unloaded while CrossServer updating is enabled.

8. Consistency is improved between the Windows
    console and the NetShield NLM.

9. The file-sharing violation while scanning issue
    is resolved.

10. Resource management is improved regarding
unreleased resources when unloading the NetShield
    NLM.

11. The last-accessed date is now preserved when a
volume scan is started from the Windows console.

* ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THIS RELEASE *

1. The Concept virus is now being detected on NetWare
    v3.12 servers.

2. Inbound scanning now checks the appropriate files when
    extension checking is enabled.

3. The default extension list now contains DOC and DOT
files. These extensions will only show if the default
or saved VIR$CFG.DAT is deleted prior to loading the
2.3.2A NLM for the first time. If the VIR$CFG.DAT
is not deleted prior to loading, the extensions
must be manually added to the Extension List. This
    is the preferred method.

4. On NW 3.x, if you copied a file to the server and
renamed the extension in the process
    (e.g., COPY C:\DAVE.TXT N:\DAVE.EXE),
the file would not be scanned if the destination
extension was in the extension list. This has
    been fixed.

____________
KNOWN ISSUES

1. Prior to changing any option from the Windows
console, all scanning must be disabled. Otherwise,
changes may not take effect on the server.

2. Occasionally, the NetShield NLM is unable to
reload after receiving updated virus definition
files through a CrossServer update. If this
occurs, manually copy the new SCAN.DAT and
NAMES.DAT to the NetShield directory on that
    server.

3. MATHLIB.NLM is auto-loaded by NetShield in an
effort to resolve compatibility issues with
    third party NLMs.

Note: If your server does not have a math co-
processor, you must load MATHLIBC.NLM instead.
To load MATHLIBC.NLM, first load NETSHLD.NLM
and MATHLIB.NLM. Then load MATHLIBC.NLM and
    reload NetShield.

4. The NetShield Windows console in Windows 95 or
Windows NT has not been tested. As a result:
    a. Screen colors may be displayed improperly
        under Windows 95.
    b. The Windows console may not run while
Microsoft NDS support service is loaded
        under Windows 95.

____________
INSTALLATION

NetShield must be installed on every file server
you want protected. Because NetShield is licensed
per file server, please refer to your license
agreement in order to ensure proper legal compliance.

* BEFORE INSTALLATION *

1. Unload the NetShield NLM if it is running.

2. Log in to the server as SUPERVISOR, ADMIN,
    or equivalent.

3. Ensure that a drive is mapped to the destination
    servers SYS volume, for example,
    MAP NEXT MYSERVER\SYS:

4. Have at least 7MB disk space available on the PC
running the Windows console for the NetShield
    program.

5. Have at least 2MB disk space available on the file
    server running the network-loadable module.

* LOADING NETSHIELD NLM *

The installation program is unable to automatically
load NetShield on your file server. To load the
NetShield NLM, go to the file-server console and
execute the NETSHLD.NCF file by typing NETSHLD.

* AFTER INSTALLATION *

Check for existing copies of NetShield in other
directories and delete or rename them. Failure
to perform this step may cause problems resulting
in incorrect version display or server failures.

* TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *

The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined
effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world
to come up with one standard by which customers can
verify their anti-virus installations. To test your
installation, copy the following line into its own
file and name it EICAR.COM.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.

When VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will
report finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.

It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS.
However, users often have the need to test that their
installations function correctly. The anti-virus
industry, through the European Institute for Computer
Antivirus Research, has adopted this standard to
facilitate this need.

Please delete the file when installation testing is
completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily
alarmed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What do I need in order to use NetShield?

A: The minimum patch update required is LIBUP8.
Update your patches and NLMs to the latest
    that Novell recommends.

Q: Can I scan remote machines with NetShield before
    they log in?

A: NetShield for NetWare only scans the files on the
server. The only way to scan during the login
sequence is during the login script. Use the
VirusScan command line product to perform the scan.

Q: Can I update NetShield data files to detect new
    viruses?

A: Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
updated NetShield data files from the McAfee Web
Site, BBS, or other online resources. To download
from the McAfee Web Site, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the McAfee Web Site (http://www.mcafee.com
        or 205.227.129.97).

    2. Click on the Download McAfee button.

    3. Scroll down, and select either McAfee for Home
(for personal evaluation copies) or McAfee
for Business (for corporate evaluation copies).
If you select McAfee for Business, you will be
asked to provide some contact information. Use
Tab to move from line to line within the form.

    4. Click on either Evaluation Copies of McAfee
Products or the McAfee Public Beta Site.

    5. Click on Anti-virus, then select Index.txt to
view descriptions of the products available on
this site. Find the most recent virus data file
        for your product.

    6. Return to the Anti-virus page and click on the
file. Download the file by saving it to your
        Desktop.

    7. Make sure that the NLM is unloaded before
        replacing the files.

    8. Data file updates are stored in a compressed form
to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
a temporary directory, then copy the files to the
appropriate directory, replacing your old files.

    9. Reload the NLM to load the new DAT files. Before
performing any scans, shut down your computer,
wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.

If you need additional assistance with downloading,
contact McAfee Download Support at (408) 988-3832.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

* REQUIRED NETWARE PATCHES *

1. Novell NetWare 3.1x and 4.x file server require-
    ments:

NetShield requires NetWare update files for
NetWare 3.x and 4.x. Updates are supplied with
the CD-ROM distributions in the file LIBUP8.EXE.
This file is available from Novell's NetWire
service and is also available from the McAfee BBS
and FTP site. To obtain these files:

    a. From Novell, refer to the Novlib Forum on
        CompuServe, the ftp.novell.com anonymous ftp
site on the Internet, or other Novell online
        services.

    b. From McAfee, download the files from the
McAfee BBS under file area P or from the
mcafee.com ftp site in the pub/patches
        directory.

The INSTALL.EXE program from LIBUP8 will
automatically copy all appropriate files to
update your NetWare 3.1x or 4.x file server.
Then expand LIBUP8.EXE, view INSTALL.DOC, and
    run INSTALL.

2. STRTL4.EXE - Novell supplied patches:

Problems with NetWare's ability to release some
areas of short-term memory causes NetWare to
    occasionally issue short-term memory allocation
messages when running NetShield. A Novell-supplied
file, SPXS.NLM as supplied in STRTL4.EXE,
provides a workaround for this problem.

    STRTL4.EXE also contains additional patches
that are recommended for NetShield. NetWare 3.12
users must apply SPXDDFIX.NLM. NetWare 3.11
    users must apply SPXFIX2.NLM.

* ROUTERS AND SAP USAGE *

NetShield uses two NetWare SAP addresses to perform
CrossServer updating and to communicate with the
Windows client. In order for NetShield to operate
properly, these SAPs must be allowed to pass
through the routers on your network. If these
packets are filtered out, it may not be possible
to configure the server from some workstations and
CrossServer updating may not work.

The NetShield SAP types are:
    0x081F - CrossServer Updating
    0x0820 - Windows Client Communication

* CONFIGURING GLOBAL MHS *

In order for NetShield to operate with Global MHS,
add the following entry to the NGM.CFG file for the
MHS server:

	[MGMSMF]
        sender-validation-enabled = FALSE

* NETWARE SFT-III *

NetWare SFT-III is not supported by this release
of NetShield.

* R/O FILE ATTRIBUTES *

NetShield will not load if the files NAMES.DAT
or SCAN.DAT are read only. If necessary, use
the DOS command ATTRIB to remedy the problem.
Example:

	attrib -r names.dat
	attrib -r scan.dat

* CD-ROM SCANNING UNDER NETWARE 3.11 *

This feature has not been tested under NetWare 3.11.
Novell does not support CD volumes for this platform.
