README file - Family Scrapbook v1.15 - 8/5/92 - Christopher E. Long

Description

This is a shareware genealogical database system. Supports
multiple databases of up to 65,535 persons each. Supports Gedcom.
Prints Ahnentafel Charts, Pedigree Charts (4,5,6, & 7 gen), Family Charts,
and Family Group Sheets. Makes Tiny Tafels. Has help screens. Easy to
use and has lots of other great features!

The Shareware Concept

Shareware basically means "Try before you buy." If you try a
Shareware program and continue using it, you must compensate the author
by registering it.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software.
Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the
method of distribution.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee
-- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

If you find this program useful and find that you are using
Family Scrapbook after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
istration payment of $40 + postage to the author, Christopher E. Long.
In return, you will be sent the latest version of Family Scrapbook on
disk, a printed manual, and a serial number that will allow you to
disable the "beg" messages.

Distribution

This program was originally distributed on BBS's as two compressed
files. The file extension may vary due to the many different file
compression programs that are in use.

        FSB115-A.???
        FSB115-B.???

You may distribute unregistered shareware copies of Family
Scrapbook as long as you abide by the following:

        1. Do not remove any files. Keep them in their complete form.
        2. Do not remove and/or alter any documentation.
        3. Distributors that charge a fee for their services must state
to their customers what shareware is and that the author
        receives compensation only through registration.
        4. If you are a registered user, do not distribute your
serialization information and/or the SERIAL.NUM file that is
created when you serialize a copy of Family Scrapbook. All
        other files may be distributed.

Family Scrapbook is copyrighted by its author and he retains
all rights to it. (Copyright 1990-1991, Christopher E. Long)

More great stuff!!

        FCG v1.01 - A fan-chart generator. Prints large, blank
pedigree charts of 3-14 generations. Uses a lot
of HD space and paper but looks GREAT! Family
Scrapbook is not needed to run it. Now available!

Documentation

The manual is contained in FAMILY.DOC. Other documentation is
contained within the *.HLP files which may be viewed and printed from within
the program. They are found in the "Helpful Info" menu. A printed manual
will be sent to you when you register.

Reccomended Hardware

        1. 640 kilobytes of base ram (will use EMS if available)

Installation Instructions

You need about 1.5MB of free disk space. The program will need
more disk space as you add data.

Uncompress all files onto floppy disks or a temporary subdir and
run the INSTALL program on disk #1. INSTALL will do the following:

                1. Make a subdirectory on your hard disk
                2. Install the files into it.
                3. If you are upgrading from a version previous to 1.10,
it will convert your old data to the new format. Make
sure you know what your old version is before starting.

MAKE A BACKUP before you begin! ...Just in case!

Example: 1. Put disk #1 in drive A:
                        2. Type A: and then press ENTER
                        3. Type INSTALL and then press ENTER
                        4. Follow the instructions...

To start the program, run the file: FAMILY.EXE
