Performing the Microsoft DOS 6.2 StepUp
on a Drive with a Micro House MBR

If you have downloaded the MS DOS 6.2 Stepup, you will get 4 files, one of
which is SETUP.BAT Running this file will leave you with a STEPUP directory
on drive C: filled with compressed DOS files. If you run SETUP.EXE from this
directory, it will fail because the drive has Micro House code installed.

If you do not see a blue and white logo at boot-up, you may run FDISK /MBR,
reboot and install DOS 6.2 Warning: if you do have a Custom Drive Type or
any other special-function Micro House MBR installed as indicated by a blue
and white logo at boot up and you go ahead and run FDISK /MBR, your disk may
become inaccessible, or only partially accessible and not bootable.

Copy the entire STEPUP directory to a floppy. (Technically all you need is
SETUP.EXE) Note that all the files will not fit onto a 1.2 MB, only a 1.4 MB.
At this point you should boot from the hard drive and run DOS6INST.EXE When
prompted, insert the disk with the SETUP.EXE on it. Purchased versions of
STEPUP will proceed correctly from this point. Downloaded versions,
however, will fail, repeatedly asking for the STEPUP Disk #1. The cause for
this problem is unknown; Microsoft's DOS technical support was unable to
provide a fix. To overcome this; F3 out of setup, go to the STEPUP directory
on C: and run SETUP.EXE Note that you must run SETUP.EXE without rebooting
after running DOS6INST and having it fail.
