The Institute for Application-Oriented Software and Systems Technology of
the German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD) have
released the software package 'Cellular Automaton Tool' (CAT). The CAT
software package, available via anonymous ftp, enables the user to build
cellular automaton models easily. A minor flaw in the documentation has
been removed.

Requirements

CAT requires a PC with Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.x, Windows NT,
OS/2 2.1 (Windows box), or an Apple PowerPC with SoftWindows. The
uncompressed software needs about one megabyte of hard disk space, the
uncompressed user manual about eight.

Goals of CAT

CAT was implemented in the EC-funded project 'ACoPaCo' (Advanced Course on
Parallel Computing). It was conceived of as a way to learn about the
particular programming paradigm of parallel computers, as each cell of a
cellular automaton stands for a separate processor in a parallel
computer.

Features
* easy-to-understand MODULA2-like programming interface
* colors that make cell states easy to grasp
* several topologies available (sheet, ring, barrel, pillow, pipe)
* highly customizable
* online help

Sources for CAT

You can download two packages, CAT_EXE.ZIP (283k, with the executable
program with related files and sample programs) and CAT_DOC.ZIP (450k,
with the compressed documentation files of the CAT manual) from several
sources:

* ftp.gmd.de (via anonymous ftp), directory 'gmd/cat'
* ftp.cica.indiana.edu (via anon. ftp), directory '/pub/pc/win3/programr'
* most mirror servers

Disclaimer

CAT is delivered 'as is'. For more information, consult the file 'LICENCE.
DOC' contained in CAT_EXE.ZIP and CAT_DOC.ZIP.
