DIGITAL ANNOUNCES PLANS TO SHIP MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 OPERATING SYSTEM

MAYNARD, Mass. -- February 28, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced it will preload the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system on its
Plug and Play desktop and notebook systems when the operating system is
available. Currently, Digital's full range of desktop and notebook systems
support the industry standard for Plug and Play systems as well as the
Microsoft Hardware Design Guide for Windows 95.

In addition, the company said it has signed a Windows 95 market development
agreement with Microsoft Corporation. The agreement ensures that Digital's
customers will be able to take full advantage of the new operating system
when it is available.

"We are constantly striving to make computers easier to use -- from new
packaging and users guides to easy-access enclosures," said Bernhard Auer,
vice president and general manager of Digital's Personal Computer
business. The addition of the Windows 95 user interface will make
computers more friendly and easier to use while allowing users to be more
productive in the business or home office.

Digital offers a full range of business desktop systems for home office,
general business, advanced productivity and power users. The systems are
designed to maximize productivity and efficiency through well-balanced
systems design and offer excellent price/performance. The products reach
new levels of ease-of-use with easy-to-open enclosures and graphical
set-up screens to introduce new users to the systems. Digital was one of
the first vendors to factory install Windows for Workgroups on all its
PCs, allowing users to share files and system resources, such as printers,
and exchange electronic mail. Windows 95 will expand that feature set and
allow users to automatically configure peripherals, such as network
cards.

The company recently introduced a new line of notebooks that redefines
style, portability and usability for mobile computer users. The Digital
HiNote line, with its ultrathin, lightweight design, large screen and full
size keyboard has made it one of the most talked about portables on the
market. The Digital HiNote Ultra also includes an innovative, "zero
footprint," wedge-shaped, hot-dockable floppy disk drive that clips
directly onto the system in the open space under the notebook created by
the flip down battery. This unique floppy dock requires no cables and
operates as an integrated floppy drive. "Hot-docking" support allows users
to easily add peripheral devices and is ideal for users who work outside
of the office. With the mobile features of Windows 95, such as built in
fax software and file synchronization, portable users will be more
productive than ever before.

"Digital's growth worldwide over the past two years has been remarkable,"
said Joachim Kempin, senior vice president of OEM sales at Microsoft.
"They've done it by combining worldwide service offerings and innovative
computer design. Now, with Windows 95, Digital takes ease of use to the
next level for both corporate and consumer customers."

Digital is a Worldwide Microsoft Authorized Support Center partner with
extensive Microsoft product knowledge, and more than 10 years of
experience providing third-party support to small, medium and large
businesses on hardware, software and networking products from more than
1,300 vendors. Digital is one of five companies chosen by Microsoft to
provide telephone support for Microsoft Windows 95. As part of the
Microsoft Windows 95 Support Team, Digital will complement Microsoft's own
product support services by providing telephone support, communications
and staff resources.

"As a key strategic service partner of Microsoft's for the last eight
years, being part of the Windows 95 Support Team builds on our existing
expertise and complements Digital's broad range of offerings planned for
Windows 95," said John Rando, vice president of Multivendor Customer
Services. "Our full range of Windows 95 services includes end-user and
help-desk support, migration services, asset management and update
services. In addition, Digital's Authorized Technical Education Centers
provide Windows 95 customer training on a worldwide basis. This means we
have solutions for customers before, during and after they adopt Windows
95."

Digital also was chosen by Microsoft to manage the worldwide client/server
infrastructure for The Microsoft Network, which will be included in
Windows 95. The contract calls for Digital to manage the wide-area
backbone network, the data center, and the help desk function for the
environment that will support Microsoft's products and services.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software
and services, together with industry- focused solutions from business
partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
