Do you feel IBM's OS/2 Warp or OS/2 2.1 is too slow? Does your hard drive
light seem to never go out? If so, then you need to read the following
product announcement for FileBar 2.00 for OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 Warp.

Introducing FileBar 2.00 for OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 Warp

FileBar, quite simply, is a menubar for your desktop. Spanning across the
top or bottom of your desktop, FileBar is intended to give you quick and
easy access to your most used applications (whether they are DOS, Windows
or OS/2!) You have eight menus in which you can place 38 different items
in each. Each menu item may represent a command shell to boot, a script
file to perform a task or even your favorite application. Menu items may
also be submenus that can contain 38 additional items (a great way to
organize your applications). With FileBar, you're just one click away from
anything. FileBar also allows to you to control tasks easily, provides
security through password protection, provides control over print
spoolers, provides a large virtual desktop for you to work in, vastly
improved support for DOS settings, support for seamless and enhanced mode
Windows sessions, and *much* more.

Because FileBar uses little memory and can act as a shell replacement (see
below), this program is ideal for computers with 12MB or less of RAM or in
systems that use a number of device drivers that use precious memory (ie:
networked computers). FileBar also allows password protection and system
administrator access features for network or group access restrictions.

FileBar as a Shell Replacement

The Workplace Shell (WPS) that comes with your standard OS/2 2.1 or Warp
system is a very powerful environment. But with that power comes a price.
The WPS can occupy 2 to 3 megabytes of RAM and, in computers with 12MB or
less of memory, that can be a source of a lot of disk swapping. (Because
hard disk drives are much slower than computer RAM, disk swapping can slow
down your computer immensely!) One way to speed up your OS/2 system is to
replace the WPS with another smaller, yet equally powerful shell.
FileBar!

In addition to using FileBar regularly; that is, launching it via an icon
like any other application and using it in conjunction with the WPS, you
can use it as a "shell replacement". You can replace the WPS with FileBar.
Using FileBar as a shell still provides you access to all your
applications and many system features (shutdown, task list management,
print spooler management, system lock up, etc) but it gives these features
to you at a much lower cost. FileBar requires A LOT less memory than the
WPS. If the shell uses less memory, that leaves more memory for your
application programs to use. This results in an overall speed increase in
your system.

What's New in Version 2.00

This newest version of OS/2's popular shell replacement is a complete
rewrite of the previous 1.xx level of FileBar. With this new version comes
a more stable, cleaner application with many new features.

The configuration file format that FileBar uses to save its options and
user settings has been rewritten. Memory handling is much improved (which
results in a rock-solid application).

Many new features have also been added:

  - submenu support (each menu item now may also be an optional
submenu that can contain 38 menu items)
  - new print spooler
  - new system lockup
  - ability to open and save different configuration files from the
    command line
  - ability to load a configuration file from the command line when
launching FileBar (useful when starting it over a network)
  - support for both 386-enhanced and common Windows sessions
  - vastly improved DOS settings support (no more messing with
settings.ini files -- everything is done via dialog boxes)
  - improved launching code - reliably launches ALL types of
    applications
  - virtual desktop - gives you a much larger desktop to work in
  - one click editing of menu items
  - much improved start up list handling
  - plus much more!

Where Can I Find FileBar?

FileBar can be found on most popular electronic software distributions
channels. Because of the ease of transporation, FileBar is showing up in
more and more places around the world. Some places which currently carry
the new FileBar are:

                        FileBar 2.00 Locations
                        ----------------------
                   Internet FTP: ftp-os2.nmsu.edu (fileb200.zip)
                     CompuServe: GO OS2USER, library #4
                         Delphi: PC User's Group

and other fine BBSes and FTP siteseverywhere!

Shareware

This application is shareware. While the program is completely usuable in
its downloadable form, if you like FileBar and plan to use it on your
personal computer, I ask that you register it. It is very affordable to do
so and financially supports further development for FileBar and other
shareware applications.

Complete registration details can be found in the archive in both the
FILEBAR.TXT documentation and the ORDER.TXT shareware order form.
