Announcing the New 1995 Foundation Directory and Directory Part 2

Nonprofit Organizations Gain Access to Current Information on 11,500+ Large
U.S. Foundations

The Foundation Center, the nation's foremost authority on foundation and
corporate philanthropy, is pleased to announce the publication of the new,
completely revised 1995 Editions of The Foundation Directory and The
Foundation Directory Part 2. Both volumes will be released this month. The
Supplement, which provides crucial updates to the 1995 Directories, will
be published in September.

The Foundation Directory, The Foundation Directory Part 2, and the
Supplement together provide unsurpassed coverage of the largest U.S.
foundations. These essential fundraising tools now cover 11,565
grantmakers, a segment of the foundation world responsible for 94% of all
foundation grant dollars awarded each year.

Entries Now More Accurately Reflect Foundations' Giving Interests

The new 1995 Editions of The Foundation Directory and the Directory Part 2
adopt, for the first time, the Grants Classification System (GCS), a
comprehensive coding scheme first used by the Foundation Center in The
Foundation Grants Index. This new system provides a more extensive -- and
thus more precise -- set of indexing terms to identify grantmaker funding
interests. Fundraisers will appreciate that, as a result of the new
indexing terms, the "Fields of Interest" section of the entries includes
many more specific terms to help them determine whether or not a funder
might be interested in their project. And the subject index, which has
also become more specific, now more efficiently directs researchers to the
foundations that share their interests. The Grants Classification System
also has a special benefit for organizations raising funds for projects
overseas; entries in the two volumes now include a section, if applicable,
that shows the specific countries, continents, and regions of the world
which have been identified as among current giving interests.

The Fundraiser's Classic Reference Tool Includes More Selected Grants

The Foundation Directory has for over three decades been considered the
primary source of information on the largest grantmaking foundations in
the U.S. The Directory provides fundraisers -- as well as foundation and
government officials, journalists, and other researchers -- with newly
gathered data on all foundations that hold assets of at least $2 million
or distribute $200,000 or more in grants each year. The volume includes
current information on 7,292 of these important foundations, which
together hold assets in excess of $174 billion and donated over $10
billion in the latest year. Over 837 of the grantmakers featured did not
appear in the 1994 Edition. Fundraisers often target these new or recently
expanded foundations, which have generally received less attention than
established funders and therefore may be good funding prospects.

The new 1995 Edition also features more selected grants to provide further
insight into a foundation's stated giving interests. Now, 55 % of all
Directory entries include up to 10 selected grants. In all, the 1995
Edition includes 28,919 grants totaling $2.9 billion.

Part 2 Expands Grantseeking Research to Next Largest Set of Foundations

The Foundation Directory Part 2 is designed specifically for nonprofit
organizations that want to broaden their funding base with grants from
mid-sized foundations, those with annual grant programs from $50,000 to
$200,000. The all-new 1995 Edition of this volume features 4,273 of these
foundations -- over 1,251 of which did not appear in the last edition. The
foundations featured together hold assets of $3.5 billion and donated over
$385 million in the latest year.

The independent, corporate, and community foundations featured in the
Directory Part 2 provide crucial support for organizations on both the
local and national level. Since htree-quarters of Directory Part 2 entries
feature selected grants, fundraisers can often find concrete examples of a
grantmaker's funding priorities. The volume includes 28,805 grants in
all.

Supplement Updates Directories Mid-Way Through Year

With the 1995 Supplement, fundraisers can receive the latest-breaking news
on grantmakers six months after the Directory and the Directory Part 2 are
published. Throughout the year, thousands of policy and staff changes
occur at the foundations covered in the two volumes. Fundraisers want to
know about such changes as rapidly as possible because any modification of
a foundation's grantmaking program may affect the approach to that
foundation. Supplement entries reflect new addresses, contacts, names of
key officials, program and policy statements, application guidelines, and
financial data -- crucial facts for fundraisers who want their grant
proposals to reflect the most accurate information available.

Foundation Portraits Deliver Essential Facts

Fundraisers will find reliable, data-packed grantmaker entries in the
Directory, the Directory Part 2, and the Supplement, with all the facts
they need to decide whether or not to pursue a funding source. Each
grantmaker entry in these volumes provides information on the most
important features of each foundation's program. Foundation Center
researchers cull the information from IRS information returns, annual
reports, published grants lists, and other sources. In addition, many
foundations verify their entries, a process that insures the highest
possible level of accuracy. Each entry includes a wealth of information:

Vital Application Facts -- the foundation name, the correct address and
telephone number, the name of the contact person, and specific details
such as application deadlines, board meeting dates, and whether or not an
application form is used.

Accurate Financial Data -- asset amount, gifts received, amount and number
of grants awarded, as well as dollar amounts for high, low, and median
grants.

Crucial Program Policies -- the foundation's statement of purpose and
activities, types of support generally awarded, and geographic and other
giving limitations.

Essential Selected Grants -- Many grantmaker entries include descriptions
of recently awarded grants, a further indication of a foundation's funding
interests.

Multiple Access Points Facilitate Research

The information included in the 1995 Editions of The Foundation Directory,
the Directory Part 2, and the Supplement helps fundraisers generate lists
of prospective funders as well as keep up-to-date on their current donors.
Specifically, these volumes facilitate research by helping users to:

Target foundations geographically. The volumes are arranged by state for
quick-scan searches of grantmakers by region. The geographic index further
pinpoints grantmakers by state and city.

Identify funders by subject field. Each entry describes the foundation's
past giving patterns and includes a statement of giving priorities. The
subject index helps fundraisers fund foundations within their geographic
region that share their subject interests.

Locate funders through the key official name index. An index lists all the
donors, officers, and trustees of these powerful grantmakers.

In addition, researchers can also quickly target grantmakers by foundation
name and by the type of grant they need (capital support, endowment funds,
etc.).
