FWB Ships High-Performance 230MB Rewritable Optical Drive

hammerDisk 230 features 1MB buffer, excellent throughput

Menlo Park, March 20, 1995. FWB, Inc., manufacturer of the award winning
Hammer brand of high performance mass storage products, today announced
shipment of the hammerDisk230. This addition to FWB's HammerDisk line of
magneto-optical subsystems sets a new standard for high-performance in the
3.5" MO arena. The new drive is fully compatible with all ISO/ANSI
standard 128MB and 230MB drives and media.

"The hammerDisk230 represents another leap forward in technology and
performance," said Fred Swan, senior product marketing manager for FWB.
"This drive is fast enough to use as a primary storage device, but still
offers removability for excellent secondary and off-line storage. The
differences in performance between 3.5" MO and removable magnetic storage
are becoming blurred. The issues for end-users are no longer performance
requirements but technology preferences."

The drive, which has an MSRP of $1,129, runs at 4,200 RPM for all media
types--the fastest rotational speed currently available on any 3.5" MO
drive. And, the hammerDisk230's unique 1MB cache/buffer is the largest
cache available on any 230MB rewritable optical drive. The result is
excellent performance. This new addition to the HammerDisk line can
sustain transfer rates of up to 1.72 MB/sec. for 230MB media and has an
average access time of 28ms. FWB intelligently engineered the full
megabyte buffer on this drive since a cache of that size on a 230MB or
128MB disk results in a tremendously high cache-hit ratio and incredibly
speedy access times. In day-to-day use, this drive will seem as fast as
virtually any removable storage device of similar capacity.

The hammerDisk230 will be shipped with the full version of FWB's
award-winning Hard Disk Toolkit, and one 230MB cartridge, plus all
required cabling, active termination and documentation. Sold as an
external subsystem, the hammerdisk230 is supported by FWB's PremiumService
one-year warranty, has a 50,000 POH MTBF, and features dust filtration
which is unrivaled by other 3.5" MO drives.

FWB will continue to sell the hammerDisk-PE230 which offers 3,600RPM
performance. The hammerDisk-PE230 retails for $929.
