IBM to Help Users Break Serial Port Bottlenecks

SOMERS, N.Y., March 22 . . . IBM announced today support for the Universal
Serial Bus (USB) connectivity standard for personal computers. USB is an
advanced peripheral bus for personal computers that enables users to
easily connect the peripheral devices commonly found on today's desktop
computers -- such as a keyboard, mouse, joystick, pointing device, modem,
or telephone. USB was developed by Compaq, Digital, Intel, Microsoft, NEC
and Northern Telecom.

"The IBM PC Company is pleased to be able add the USB technology to its
desktop platforms which is in addition to IBM's announced support for
Versit GeoPort," said Harry Nicol, director of technical strategy for the
IBM PC Company.

Versit GeoPort is a specification for a multi-platform, universal network
port used to connect desktop and mobile computers to analog and digital
telephone networks. It is developed by Versit, a multi-vendor initiative
of the communications and computer industries founded by Apple, AT&T, IBM
and Siemens.

By supporting USB and Versit GeoPort, IBM is providing our customers and
suppliers a choice in device connectivity and telephony solutions.
